Chapter Text
It has been a couple months since the battle against the Tolokans, and Riri has been spending a lot more time in Wakanda, specifically with Shuri during her breaks. Both of them have been spending time in the lab, although Shuri would never tell you what she was working on, and anytime you got close, she would shut everything off and run away. They have gotten to know each other, and often find them thinking about the other subconsciously. Neither wants to admit that they have feelings for each other, one because Shuri has a kingdom to attend to, and Riri doesn’t want to get in the way of that.
One day while Riri was chilling in the lab, thinking of a new idea, Shuri came in with a request. “Hey Riri, How are you enjoying the lab?
“It is everything an inventor could ask for, with the technology here, you could easily picture what you want. Although I am struggling with what to build, since you are busy and I have spare time.” She answers, intrigued why she popped up all of the sudden, unannounced. I mean sure it was HER lab, but a warning would be nice.
“That is why I am here, I was wondering how long it would take to make a miniature vibranium detector? Something not too small, almost the size of a phone maybe.”
“It would take about three months, since I have to figure out how to shrink everything. But why would you need a small one?
“I lost a small box with a vibranium ring in it. My mother gave it to me, told me to give it to keep for special occasions, or to remember my family, and my Ai can’t track them, so I figured that I would use the detector to find them.” How could her AI not find the ring, it could find any and everything, but this was the queen, why would she lie? “Umm, Ok. I will start working on it, and let you know when it is finished. Anything else you need before it gets working, because once I start, I tend to get tunnel visioned and ignore a lot of things?”
“Nope, Just get to it and I will see it once it’s done. Have fun.”
Three month later
The design is finally finished, and has been tested to make sure that it would work for Shuri. Riri asked the Ai to deliver a message to her, telling her that the detector she wanted was finished and ready. Shuri replied "nice, can you bring it to my room in five minutes, thanks". Five minutes, why five minutes, and not right now? It was a small device, and she was sure that after three months of waiting, she would be eager to get her earrings back. Nevertheless, she waited five minutes, then knocked on the door to Shuri’s room. It took a while for her to open the door, and when she did you noticed that she was wearing That purple jumpsuit that they first met in. She invited her in, and she took note of how big the room was. In the middle of the back wall was a king sized bed with white and black sheets that looked like they had just been made. A big carpet was in the middle of the floor, and on her walls were posters, and pictures of her family, with three big ones of her father, brother, and mother all next to each other.
“Thanks Riri, this looks very nice, and I assume it has been tested?” She stated, pointing to the device in the younger girl's hand.
“Yes it has, and now you can find your box.”
“Can you help me look for them, I have no clue where to start, and you know how to use the device?” She asked excitedly.
“Sure.”
They searched for what felt like hours until Riri pointed to a high shelf. “Hey Shuri, I found them, they are on a shelf, but I can't reach them, you have to get 'em for me.” Before Riri can move, Shuri is behind her, her front pressed against her back pushing her slightly as she reaches for the ring on the top shelf. Riri felt like she would melt. She was used to being towered over, but with how close Shuri is, feeling her chest rise and fall, one of her hands on her waist to keep herself from falling over, this feeling was overwhelming. She started to think about the last three months, because she always wondered why Shuri asked her to build the machine, sure she had an AI that would find the ring, but when she told her that the AI could not find her ring, she thought that to be a little weird. This super intelligence could not a find small ring. This meant that Shuri asked for a personal reason unbeknownst to the younger girl, but for what she could not figure out. She started to think about her interactions with the Shuri.
They had been getting more comfortable with being around each other, but Shuri started to close the space between them. Leaning on Riri, resting her head on the shorter girl's head when they were talking about something in the lab, inviting her to hang out more, exploring the city, going on flies in the royal aircraft, and improving her Ironheart suit. It was really nice, but a little misleading because they were friends, but Riri could not tell if Shuri wanted to be more. After all, she was the queen, had a kingdom to run, people to take care of, trying to keep out of war, why would she have time to date, much less a girl she just met. “Thanks for finding my ring, it means a lot y’know. Speaking of which, did I tell you about who gave it to me?” She asked.
“Yes, You said that your mother gave it to you, for a special occasion, or to remember your family when you find yourself feeling lonely. Why?”
“Riri, When we first met in your dorm, and you refused to come with us to Wakanda, I thought that this entire journey would be long and treacherous. As time went on, I started to enjoy hanging around you, talking about whatever in the lab, showing you around the city and watching your face light up at the technology we have. My mind has been filled with the time we spent with each other, and I would dread every time you have to go back to MIT. You are very special to me, and I love you dearly. That is why I got you this ring, So that when we are apart, we have something to remember each other by.”
Riri was very touched by this sentiment, and found tears forming in her eyes. People have confessed their feelings to her before, but something about this made her feel differently. She loved Shuri too, if not tenfold and also felt sad when they were apart. “Shuri, there are not many words to describe the love I have for you. You never fail to make me laugh or smile, and when I am feeling sad, I know that I can go to you for comfort. The ring is very nice, and I will wear it everyday.” Shuri took Riri’s hand and slid the ring, kissing it after like in the old movies. They kissed and stood their hugging for what felt like hours, until both of them got tired of standing.” "Shuri, it is getting late, and I was wondering if I could sleep in your room tonight.” Shuri was a little surprised by the question, and for a second Riri was scared that Shuri would say no and kick her out. Instead she smiled, hugged her tighter, then walked them both over to bed where they settled under the covers and went to sleep.
