Summary
Delloso de la Rue and Captain K. P. Hob, in the forest together: the first time that someone has wanted Hob for himself and not what he might do for them, the first time that someone has touched Rue in millennia. At the Hunt, Rue sought connection with Hob, and discovered that they could no longer lie to themselves about who they were and what they wanted; Hob sought the truth from Rue, and found something far greater than his mission. At the Hunt, they were able to recognize something like hunger in each other. For the first time, these fey — who have lived only for duty — experienced desire; yet desire went unfulfilled. Rue could not reveal their deception, and if Hob grew close he would catch them in their lie. Hob chooses honor, allowing Rue to put up walls between them, unable to accept their forgiveness and sure that he has only caused them harm.
The following day, Rue burned the letter that might have served as a confession, a chance at happiness, but their oldest and dearest friend has promised to assist them in all things. This time, Wuvvy does not break her promise.
