Enid’s “claws” rubbed against the school’s hallway walls as she stomped up the stairs. She thought she may have heard a few doors creaking open behind her and she assumed it was people checking to see what the commotion could possibly be.
If this was just a month ago, she would be careful not to wake anyone, even if her level of anger was equivalent to what she had felt, now.
But Wednesday had changed her.
Wednesday.
She growled as she stood in front of her destination. Room 201. Dorm of Yoko Takana.
As soon as she slammed the door open, she heard complaints coming from the voices of Yoko’s neighbors. She yelled back at them.
Yoko, on the other hand, only looked up from her desk, tilting her head to the side, “Enid,” She questioned, “What are you doing in here so late? So angry?”
Enid screamed, kicking the doors closed before she stomped towards Yoko just to scream once more.
Yoko simply stared at her, “Feel free to stop screaming, anytime. I’d love to hear what’s got you so angry. Are you wolfing out?”
That struck a nerve. No, Enid wanted to say, I did NOT wolf out. And you mentioning that only made me so much ANGRIER.
However, rather than voicing her angers, she just released a louder, more gut-wrenching scream.
Enid looked down to see that Yoko had already managed to pull out her phone and begin an unending journey through her Tiktok “For-you-page”.
Enid had an urge to take the phone and throw it out of the window, then throw the glass shards from the impact out into the courtyard onto random, unsuspecting students.
Wednesday would love that.
Instead, she finally uttered, “I hate Wednesday Addams.”
“Oh?” Yoko seemed surprised for a second. She paused her TikTok video and continued speaking, “Just a day ago you were gushing about her and the party you were planning for her. And the matching ‘snoods’ that you had planned to go on dates with.”
”Shut up!” Enid yelled. She clinched her fist. Blood trickled from her palms onto Yoko’s floor. Supposedly formed by Enid’s claw-like nails. “I wasn’t gushing. And I didn’t say anything about a date!”
“I’m not sure how else to describe how you talked about her. I don’t think ‘visiting a cute restaurant’ and ‘pampering her with all of her favorite meals’ would count as anything less than a date.”
”Well, Yoko, it was her birthday!” Enid screamed, “You’re supposed to want to treat someone nice on their birthday.”
”Sure, Enid.”
“Well, fine, maybe I did go a little overboard. Isn’t that a good thing, though?” Enid raised her voice even louder, Yoko was quite shocked as she hadn’t realized the other girl could get much louder, “Wednesday just didn’t care! She didn’t give a fuck!”
”Oh, dang, girl. Your efforts were rejected?” Yoko frowned.
“Not just rejected. Stomped on!” Enid stomped her feet, “Spat on!” She spat onto Yoko’s floor, “Thrown away!” She reached for the nearest item, which happened to be a little can of nail polish, and threw it in a random direction.
“Wow. That must’ve hurt.”
“It hurt. So, so, so bad.” Enid voice suddenly softened and she jumped onto Yoko’s bed and fell into an uncontrollable sob.
“That’s right, Enid. Let it out.” Yoko frowned at her for a moment, before resuming her scroll through TikTok.
A few minutes went by, the only noise coming from the videos that Yoko were observing on her phone. Finally, she spoke, “Enid don’t you think it’s about time you went back to your room?”
Silence.
”Enid?”
She looked over at her, only to find her sobs had stopped. The pillow that Enid had cried into was slowly beginning to dry. Yoko was now able to hear faint snoring now that her ears weren’t occupied by her phone.
She went back to her desk, this time in order to scroll through instagram. She did so for hours, before falling asleep as soon as the sun arose.
When she awoke, she was greeted by her own room decorated in different orange and pink items.
“What in the hell is going on here?” Yoko asked to no-one in particular.
Enid’s reply startled her, as she had not known anyone else was in her room, “I thought you wouldn’t mind if I roomed in here for the time being.”
”Oh. Go ahead, I don’t mind at all.”
“Great! I already told Ms. Thornhill and Principle Weems about the new dorm arrangement! Are you fine with that, too, Roomie?”
”Well.” Yoko paused, “Yes. But it would’ve been nice of you to a-.”
”That’s great!” Enid beamed, “I told Wednesday, too. I hope she’s miserable now that I’m gone. She probably thinks you’re so lucky to be my new Roomie.”
”Sure.” Yoko sighed.
“Actually, I think she enjoys misery.” Enid shook her head, “I hope she’s really happy now that I’m- No, no. That’s not right.”
Yoko groaned, “You couldn’t get someone else to handle you in the middle of your breakup?”
“Stop it.” Enid glared at her, “Only use the word ‘breakup’ when you’re talking about couples. I thought that was common knowledge.”
”Who said I wasn’t?”
Enid’s glare hardened. “You aren’t.”
”I don’t think you can run from your relationship problems much longer.” Yoko shrugged, “Me and my ex had a period like this for a while. I got mad at her and ignored her for a bit. I didn’t think it was a big deal. Now look at us. Exes.”
“I am going to shove your beloved phone down your throat if you call me and Wednesday a couple one more time.”
”I’m just giving you advice.” Yoko shrugged once again.
”We are besties. Nothing more than that.” She then corrected herself, “Or, were besties.”
”Friends to lovers?”
Enid’s claws came out unconsciously. Normally, she would retract them as quick as possible. But she left them there, now. Maybe it’d make her appear more threatening.
”Enemies to lovers? Now that you guys hate each other?”
“Fine.” Enid sighed, “I give up. You win.”
“Oh, what? You actually like her like that.”
“No. I have a boyfriend. I think. Me and Ajax are complicated.”
“He told me the same thing.”
“Well, whatever. Eff Ajax. This isn’t about him.” Enid rolled her eyes, “It’s about Wednesday. And I think you’re right about us two. I think we do love each other.”
Yoko gave her a slow nod. “Not like the way you’re saying we do, though. We aren’t in love. I think.”
Enid’s eyes widened and she shook her head as if such a gesture were going to erase the words that had come out of her mouth. “No, I know. We are not in love. But we do love. We are besties, after all.”
Yoko interrupted her, “Are you done ranting, yet? I’m getting hungry and I’m going down for breakfast in a few minutes.”
“Almost.” Enid smiled, “It’s been nice rooming with you so far, Yoko. But I think I forgot something of mine in my old dorm. I’d better go get it.”
“Mhm.”
And as soon as those words left her mouth, Enid had ran out of the room.
