I had a fantastic time researching Napoleonic naval history and early 19th century fashion and accessories for this (thank you V&A digital fashion plate archive and Franz Meyer's Handbook of Ornament), and probably ended up watching far too many Horatio Hornblower films and Persuasion adaptations than was necessarily helpful.
