Chapter 1: Introduction to deceit 101
Chapter Text
Enid Sinclair has gone through sixteen years of life unscathed by the vicious cycle of gossip solely by following a simple three rule plan:
1.Be kind to others (they usually spare the nice ones)
2.Avoid any type of petty drama (it only creates unnecessary attention towards you)
3.Never tell a black lie (seriously, it's only going to blow up in your face in the end)
The list, which was neatly written by her ten year old self on one of her older brother's parking tickets, had always resided in one of her pockets or schoolbag since elementary school (the handwriting had slightly faded over time but she could still make out one out of two letters) And even though Enid is now technically her school's own little gossip girl, she had remained completely untouched.
That is until a few weeks ago.
When Ajax — her now ex-boyfriend — decided that it was a good idea to break up with her in front of the entire school. It was utterly mortifying, to have your boyfriend citing very loudly the whys and wherefores of your breakup for any student passing by to hear; to have the dirty laundry that you've meticulously been hiding for years suddenly get thrown into the public's hands.
So what if her claws got out of hand sometimes? That's normal for the average werewolf teenager! There was no reason for him to… expose her like this.
It's needless to say, she hasn't gone out of her room for anything except attending classes these last few weeks. Choosing to rather eat in the privacy of her dorm than the dining area, spending all of her time sulking, and listening to loud and sad music.
"Let me rot in peace, Willa!" Enid holds on to her comforter tight enough to almost rip off the fabric.
"No," she objects, still trying to wrench the duvet away from Enid's grasp.
Enid unleashes her bedspread from her death grip before it tears. Wednesday, who had been using all of her strength to pull the comforter off of her, immediately falls on her behind with a thud. “Shit! Sorry, you okay?”
Wednesday stands, all tense and fuming with barely concealed anger. “Sinclair,” she hisses.
“I didn’t mean to make you fall, I swear—”
“I’ve had enough of your melodramatics, your breakup happened four weeks ago. Move on or I’ll make you.”
She doesn’t exactly know how Wednesday plans to ‘make her move on’ but she doesn’t dare to ask. Enid shuts up and nods.
Only thirty minutes into her first public appearance since her very public breakup, Enid Sinclair wants nothing more than to set herself on fire then throw herself off of a cliff.
Her heightened senses pick up on every hushed whisper and furtive glances, and even if her school wasn't brimming with gossip; the tension around this table was still a good enough reason to go immolate herself.
"...Xavier, How nice of you to… join me," she hopes it's good enough to ease the air, maybe even get to know him a bit more. You can never have enough friends.
He nods lazily, not even lifting his head to meet her eyes.
Enid fiddles with her sleeves, clearly not an extrovert, "So… why exactly are you sitting next to me? We're not exactly friends… or even acquaintances."
"Oh, I just wanted to talk to Wednesday about something,"
She looks around them, "Wednesday's not here,"
"I know," Xavier has this permanent edginess attached to his face, it's either charming or incredibly annoying. It must depend on who you ask. "You two are always together, I don't need to go looking everywhere for her when I could just wait for her to go look for you."
Okay, ouch. She actually thought that maybe he wanted to be friends with her. Her face contorts into a scowl, "I don't appreciate what you're doing,"
"I'm not doing anything. Besides, it's harmless, we're basically waiting for her together." Alright, the edginess oozing off of him is definitely annoying her.
Five minutes later and Xavier still hasn't left the table, he hadn't even moved seats or tried to conceal his presence in any way.
"Okay, what the hell's wrong with you? You're just using me like some bait to lure Wednesday in a conversation with you." her voice quivers in anger.
"Don't word it like that, I'm not using you!" Xavier slams his hand onto the table, making a few heads turn in their way.
"Whatever, I'm not doing this again." she says, already standing on her feet when Xavier grabs her by the wrist. "Seriously, I need to tell her something important and she's not gonna show up except if you're here,"
Enid's had enough, her annoyance towards him had reached its breaking point. Can't a woman eat in peace without being disrupted? And what was his problem with Wednesday? God knows she needs a break after everything that went down last semester.
Rule number two… Rule number two… you already broke it once, no need to break it twice!
"You'll have plenty of time to confess your undying love to her during class, leave me alone." she growls, it's easier to ignore the guilt gnawing at her bones when she's angry.
Xavier's flushed cheeks confirms what she suspected. By now, pretty much everyone in the dining hall is watching their heated exchange with bated breaths.
Enid tries gathering herself, breathing in and out repeatedly. Her pent-up anger towards Ajax is slowly resurfacing and she's taking it all out on Xavier in some sort of twisted coping mechanism.
"You need to mind your business, mutt!"
Don't say anything, he's not worth a social suicide. Just go back to your room, read a book or watch a YouTube video. Please keep your mouth shut!
"Well, you're the one who needs to stay away from my girl!" she hisses loudly.
It's a slip of the tongue, really, she totally didn't mean it like that. Firstly: Enid doesn't even like girls and if she did, she sure as hell wouldn't like her roommate. Secondly: even if she was attracted to women, she wouldn't use such possessive words to define her girlfriend. Lastly: who actually says stuff like that in real life?
She's too prideful to correct herself; so she puffs out her chest and proudly stands her ground as if she meant every word, staring directly into his eyes in defiance. The arrogant smirk plastered on her face is almost genuine and Xavier's dumbfounded face makes the lie worth it.
Enid 1 – Xavier 0.
Wednesday is going to torture her, skin her alive, throw her corpse in a lake, then dance on her grave when she'll find out about what happened.
Stay away from my girl… I spoke like a 90s rom-com antagonist, ugh! I'm so lame!
Her third rule? Broken, destroyed, totally vandalized. The mere thought about the consequences of her actions triggers a wave of nausea. She feels dizzy, her hands are shaking uncontrollably, and she's two seconds away from running away in the woods to never be found again.
She's done for, not only did she lie about her sexuality (problematic, much?) Enid lied about dating one of her friends! Who's a real person! Who's very smart and intuitive and is probably on her way to murder her! "I'm a terrible person…"
"You are, it's despicable."
She jumps, taken aback by her roommate's sudden apparition,"Wednesday—!"
"Enid," she starts, "This vicious side of yours, you hide it well."
"Do I…?"
"Xavier told me everything. You're a terrific liar and a master manipulator."
Enid's totally done for, she swallows. "Oh my gosh, I am so sorry! It just—slipped! Did you clear things up with him?"
"Now, why would I want to do that? This lie of yours, it benefits me greatly.'' Her tone is genuine, there's no malicious undertones or sarcastic double entendres. "It's genius, I don't have to invent a multitude of small lies to get Xavier off my back when a much bigger lie can make him leave me alone for an undetermined amount of time."
"What? So you just want us to keep this going and… fake date?"
"Yes."
She says it like it's the most obvious piece of information ever told. Is it an Addams thing to find incongruity normal?
"That's ridiculous."
Wednesday scoffs, "If you want to tell everyone the truth, that you lied out of spite in a petty argument: Go ahead. I won't stop you."
"... Yeah, no thanks." she mutters under her breath, loud enough for her friend to hear.
"Then we shall 'fake date', just like you said."
"But… I'm not gay,"
Wednesday gives her a pointed look. "Good. There will be no risk of you ever falling in love with me in the process."
Enid jaw drops, a scandalized gasp escapes her mouth, "That's—! Wednesday!"
"Most people I've interacted with since I've transferred here have developed romantic feelings for me, don't blame me for being cautious."
Her cheeks and ears heat up. It's embarrassing how Enid's made speechless by the mere suggestion of ever harboring romantic feelings for a girl.
"Well, maybe you're the one who's gonna fall in love with me," her intonation is similar to one of a child defending themselves. Wednesday raises an eyebrow, not believing one single word she uttered.
"And I'm also quite popular too!" she adds.
The ghost of a smile hovers over her roommate's lips, "I'd rather chop off each of my phalange with a rusty knife than ever entertaining the thought of falling in love with you."
"Alright, we'll bet on it. The first one who’ll fall in love loses!" She extends her right hand towards her, offering a handshake. "C'mon! Say it,"
Cold hands meet warm ones, Wednesday's hold is firm enough to make Enid slightly wince.
"...I'm not saying that but, whatever."

Chapter Text
The Addams-Sinclair Guide to Fake Dating (or ASGFD for short) was a thorough document of nearly ten pages long.
Enid and Wednesday wrote it together, with the brief help of Thing. It described in excruciating detail the do‘s and don'ts and the pros and cons of multiple 'couple-y' practices, and whether or not they’d manage to act them out in the open.
And for someone whose skin practically melts off at the mere mention of any kind of physical closeness, Wednesday is weirdly calm discussing all of this. She just stares at her with her usual dead eyes, meanwhile Enid's constantly fighting a blush and avoids eye contact. It's not exactly fair.
“If you want us to be credible as a couple, you’ll have to stop being so emotive.”
Enid’s train of thoughts abruptly stops, “Huh?”
“It’s not unusual for… lovers to be intimate with each other,” Her roommate bluntly says, “Your bashful attitude towards any kind of intimacy might attract suspicious looks. You were begging for me to hug you last year, but now you can’t even look me in the eye while we discuss a subject as naive as kissing.”
Okay, I wasn't begging at all…
“It’s one thing to hold hands and hug your friends, but I don’t exactly kiss them on a daily basis.”
A thoughtful look crosses Wednesday's face, “That's a great idea."
Enid blinks, a look of pure confusion crosses her face. "What? To french my friends everyday?"
Wednesday’s eyes bore through hers, “No. We aren’t used to being physically close with each other, that's why you're so anxious about this.”
"Well, that's easily fixable, right?"
“Of course, we could just practice.”
She frowns, panic surging through her veins, “Oh, like practise kissing? On each other? Now ?”
"We have already agreed on public displays of affection in section 8 of the ASGFD. If we plan to do it in public we have to be able to do it in private, and I suppose I don't have any other plans for tonight."
"Oh, okay …" Her agreeing to this section of the guide was supposed to be a problem for distant future-Enid, she had no idea it’ll bite her this soon. "Well, there's no time like the present, right?"
They hesitantly look at each other, a heavy silence overcasting them. There’s a certain intensity behind Wednesday’s eyes as they quickly glance down to her lips. Enid swallows harshly, what the fuck.
Wednesday nods nonchalantly, coming closer — and invading a little bit more of her personal space than what she was used to — there was a slight twitch in her eye; a tick Enid noticed she had whenever she was focused.
She puts her hand on Enid's left cheek, her thumb grazing one of the scars Tyler had left her. "Is that okay?" she questions. Wednesday’s words ghost across Enid’s lips, whose breath hitches at their sudden closeness. "Uh, sure,"
Their lips softly meet in a slow, chaste kiss. Wednesday is surprisingly gentle, maybe even a bit unsure, it's hard to tell when her brain feels like TV static is coming out of her ears.
Enid pulls away, her cheeks and ears flushed. She clears her throat, tucking her hair behind her ear as she shyly looks over to her roommate. Wednesday sits stiffly, her face as impassive as ever.
“…That was terribly anticlimactic,”
“Yup, totally!” Enid responds with a bit too much haste, finally standing up from the floor. “It's getting late and it’s a new moon. You know how it is, Goodnight!”
Her bed creaks loudly as she practically throws herself onto it. Wednesday stays on the floor for quite some time, before also resigning herself to her own bed.
Enid's night turns out to be devoid of any real rest.
Notes:
i also want to thank all of the kind people who commented on the first chapter, didnt have the time to respond to all of them but im rlly grateful for some of the love people have sent towards this fic <3
