Work Text:
The fireplace crackled. The brat was resting on the couch, recovering from his almost-hypothermic experience. Technoblade set down a mug of hot chocolate on the table, in front of the pink-haired woman that had shown up on his doorstep with the child in her arms. Techno sat down across from her.
She looked… like an amalgamation, to say the least. Her left leg was a parrot’s, with feathers and talons and everything. Her right leg looked like a kangaroo’s, but bent a little to fit the anatomy of a human. Her arms looked to be covered in slime, but if you looked a little closer it would become clearer that her arms weren't covered in slime; her arms were slime.
And finally, she had a raccoon tail that would occasionally swish from side-to-side, and two little black horns peeking out from under her hair buns. A green blindfold covered her eyes. So, all in all, an abomination. Not necessarily a bad thing, she did look a little cool, but not something you see everyday, not even with hybrids.
“So,” Techno began, “you promised answers if I helped house you two. So. Answers. Now.”
The woman huffed. “Well, my name is Lizzie, thank you for asking.” She snarked, before she glanced over at the kid, her expression softening. “But… Well, his exile wasn’t going terribly well. So I removed him from the situation. Permanently. He wasn’t too happy with the way I did it, so he ran off. I managed to find him in the snow after half an hour, but as you can see, it’s storming right now. I didn’t really believe in our capabilities of survival, and I saw your little abode in the distance and decided to try my luck.”
Well, that was incredibly informative. “Of course his exile wasn’t all sunshine in rainbows, it’s exile.” He snorted. “Just because the kid decided to go on a depression arc for sympathy points doesn’t mean he was suffering. Also, I don’t really want the wrath of the server admin coming down on me when I’m tryin’ to live a peaceful and retired life, so once the storm is ove-”
He didn’t get to finish his sentence. The woman - Lizzie - slammed her fist into the table, leaving a sizable dent where her fist was once she removed it. The hot chocolate mugs had spilled, and now lay shattered on the ground.
And through her green blindfold, he could see two red eyes glaring at him with indescribable fury. He felt a chill go down his spine, before he shook it off. He was Technoblade, the Blood God. Why would he be scared of some stranger?
“I don’t know your history with Tommy, Technoblade.” She said carefully. “And I doubt you know what exactly happened in exile. However, if you ever, ever minimize that child’s pain, tears, and suffering as ‘going through a depression arc’ again, I will put you six feet under. And that’s not even getting into the fact how okay you are with a CHILD’S exile.”
He stood up, his hand grabbing the hilt of his sword before he remembered he was a pacifist now. Still, he kept his hand on the sword for intimidation purposes.
“You think you can threaten me?” He hissed. “I’m literally sheltering you two from a storm right now. And clearly you don’t know Tommy well enough if you think that kid is capable of feeling sadness. He gets mildly inconvenienced for two seconds and then he bounces back to being annoying and loud. I assure you he’s fine.”
Lizzie took off her blindfold to stare at him. He was greeting with two blood-red eyes burning with rage hot enough to fuel the flames of the Nether. He felt primal fear take hold, and he had to ground himself by clenching his sword’s hilt hard enough to break it.
“You’re correct that my outburst was rude for a guest.” She said softly. “But you’re incorrect about Tommy not feeling sadness. I held that child in my arms as he cried and wondered if the world was against him, and if everyone he knew hated him. I’m not going to tell you the extent of what he’s been through, partly because he’s passed out on the couch and unable to give his consent to me doing that, but also because you seem to be convinced that Tommy is immune to things like sadness and pain, and that his experiences in exile was just him being dramatic.”
Techno felt his arms begin to wobble, as if something invisible was pressing down on them, or as if they were becoming jelly. However, as soon as Lizzie closed her eyes and took a deep breath, they instantly went back to normal and he stopped feeling like he had just been splashed with a potion of weakness.
“I’m going to get something to clean this up.” She said, gesturing to the now shattered mugs. “Apologies for the mugs. That was rude of me. Look after Tommy while I’m busy doing that. Oh,” she leveled him with a glare. “Let me know if he wakes up. I don’t trust you to handle him with any sort of tact.”
Something about her glare made his Piglin instincts want to shut up and listen to her. And while it killed his pride, his human half was agreeing. This woman was dangerous, and not in the usual ‘pvp legend’ or ‘manipulative mastermind’ way. Something about her felt completely eldritch.
“Okay.” He said. “I’ll do that.”
By the time Lizzie had cleaned up the hot chocolate and broken mugs, Tommy had been slowly waking up. Techno notified her as soon as he noticed, and she scrambled to the kid’s side as soon as she could.
Slowly, Tommy opened his eyes. He looked around the cabin confusedly, but once he saw Technoblade, his eyes widened, and he practically threw himself back against the couch. His breathing picked up, and his eyes were wide. Shoot, he was having a panic attack.
“Why the fuck is he here?!” Tommy demanded, before looking around and realizing this was Techno’s living space, and Techno was supposed to be there. “Why- why the fuck am I here?!”
Thankfully, Lizzie intervened before Techno had to try and step in with half-hearted attempts that he had no idea how to even do correctly. She gently shushed him, resting her hand on his.
“Hey, Tommy.” She said softly. “Look at me. I’m right here. I won’t let anything bad happen to you.”
“Lizzie…?” Tommy glanced at her, briefly calming down before his breath hitched and his eyes filled with tears. He dove towards the pink-haired woman, wrapping his arms around her and sobbing, blabbering frantic apologies and promises to do better. Lizzie comforted him, telling him something about how there was no need to be sorry and that he was just scared.
Techno stood there in awkwardness, confusion, and slowly mounting horror. Tommy… didn’t really apologize. It wasn’t his thing. He simply goofed off with the person he annoyed as if that made up for everything. And the only time Techno had seen him cry was when L’Manburg had been blown up. Yet here he was, sobbing and apologizing as if his life depended on it.
… What had happened in exile?
“Shhh, shhh.” Lizzie smiled. “Hey, It’s okay. I’m not mad. Are you still tired, Toms?”
Tommy sniffed. “... Yeah.”
“Okay” She smiled encouragingly, as if he had just done something incredible. “That’s okay! I’m not mad at you for that. Do you want to do something else other than sit here?”
“Well…” Tommy shifted, awkwardly pulling away from her. “I don’t have to, I can go black to sleep, or sit here while you and Techno do stuff-”
“Tommy.” She repeated, somehow being even gentler than before. “What do you want?”
Tommy was silent, as if he was mentally debating the pros and cons of answering. Eventually, he did.
“I… I’m kinda hungry. And I’d let to get some new clothes, but I get if that’s a little too much-”
“I’m sure we can work something out.” Lizzie smiled. “What do you want to eat?”
“I… Don’t know.”
“Alright.” Lizzie turned towards Techno, finally acknowledging the third party in the room. “What can you make? Preferably warm foods?”
Geez, who was this lady, his mom or something? He didn’t vocalize that, and instead said “I got stuff to make rabbit stew.”
She nodded at him and turned back to the trembling child. “Is that good, Tommy?”
Tommy spared him an uneasy glance, and for some reason that felt like he had just been punched in the heart. The child nodded.
“That’s fine.” He said quietly.
Lizzie stood up, guiding Tommy along with her by holding his hand. For a brief moment, Techno forgot that Tommy was 15-16, and instead saw him as a scared 8 year old, holding onto his mother’s hand like a lifeline, trying to find some form of comfort from it.
And suddenly it hit Techno like an anvil over the head. Tommy is small. Way smaller than a kid should be at his age. His arms were so thin you could almost see bone, and his cheeks were hollow and haunted. His skin was pale and covered in dirt, and he walked as if he would fall over if the slightest breeze hit him. His clothes were no better; they had clearly been through a lot, with multiple tears and rips in them, absolutely filthy.
Again: what happened in exile? Tommy was a bit stupid sometimes, but he wasn’t incompetent. He wasn’t incapable of caring for himself.
So how could he have gotten like this?
“Techno.” Lizzie’s voice interrupted his thoughts. He grunted to let her know he was listening. “Do you have any spare clothing Tommy could use?”
“Yep.” Techno nodded. “Wait here, I’ll get some.” Mostly because he did not trust either of them in his room, and just didn’t really like having people in his room in general. Even Phil.
He picked out the smallest clothes he owned but still winter appropriate, but that really limited the selection. Tommy would just have to deal with baggy clothes.
He paused.
Should he get something for Lizzie as well? She also had clothing that was horribly suited for the tundra climate he resided in. They weren’t going to be staying for very long, of course. Once Tommy has all healed up Techno would kick them out himself if he had to, but leaving Lizzie to suffer in the cold just because her stay was temporary would be incredibly rude.
He grabbed a nice baby blue cloak for her and some winter boots, the same color as his retired getup.
He walked down the stairs, returning to the living room. He held up the clothes he picked out.
“They’re gonna be a little baggy.” He warned them. “So you’ll probably want to adjust them a little. I also got Lizzie this.” He held out the boots and blue cloak for her to take.
“Oh!” She took them, running her fingers over the soft fabric. “I didn’t expect that. Thank you, Technoblade.” She gave him a genuine smile, and Techno shifted a little awkwardly. He didn’t do well with genuine gratitude.
“Just call me Techno. It feels a little cringe to refer to me by my full name.”
Lizzie huffed in amusement. “Alright, Techno. Thank you.”
“Yeah- uh… you’re welcome.”
“Oi.” Tommy squeezed Lizzie’s hand a bit. “I’m still here, ya dickheads.”
Lizzie choked on a laugh, and Tommy seemed to realize what he just said.
“Wait! I-I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have been rude, I’m really sorry-”
“Tommy.” This time, Techno was the one to calm him down. “It’s fine, don’t apologize. Lizzie found it funny.”
Lizzie sent him another grateful look for that, and he did not feel warm and fuzzy at that, no sir, not him.
“Do you need help with the clothes?” Lizzie asked.
Tommy held the clothes to his chest protectively. “I can dress myself.”
“Alright, you go do that, then.” She smiled. “I can help Techno make that rabbit stew if he wants me to.”
“That sounds good.” Techno gave a thumbs-up.
“Okay.” He eyed them both suspiciously. “I’ll… I’ll go do that.”
He left the main area, and Techno shouted after him. “The bathroom’s on the right!”
When he was completely gone, Techno turned to Lizzie.
“So… Dinner?” He didn’t know how to bring up Exile without her snapping at him again. She could be very scary when she wanted to be.
“Yeah. Let’s get started on that.” Lizzie hummed. “Where do you keep your ingredients?”
“Oh, storage room.” He said casually. “I can go get that. Can you get the stove ready?”
“Sure. Oh, by the way, Techno.” She made her voice serious, making sure she had his attention before continuing. “Please don’t ask any questions about Exile. Tommy will bring that up when he feels comfortable. But if you want to know how to not make it worse, when you need him to do something or are telling him something, try asking him instead of commanding him.” Her expression darkened. “He’s had enough of that.”
“Okay.” He nodded. “I can try.”
“No.” She said, voice firm. “You will. I don’t want you to just try, I want you to do it.”
He snorted. “Who are you, my mom? You can’t command me to do anythin’.”
“Honestly, given how dysfunctional the dynamics in this cabin might turn out to be, I might just have to become your mom.”
That was a joke, right? He was 99% sure that that was a joke.
“Alright.” He said, mostly to get her to back off. “I won’t command Tommy to do anythin’.”
“Thank you.” Her expression softened. “Really, thank you.”
When Lizzie woke up one morning, it was to shouting. She blinked awake, looking beside her. Yep, Tommy was still there, so it wasn’t him and Techno fighting then.
After they had made stew, they all ate in silence. A fight almost started between Tommy and Techno, but Lizzie managed to calm them both down. Now her and Tommy were resting in an empty room Techno didn’t use on the second floor.
She looked out the window to see Techno being confronted by 4 strangers. She didn’t recognize them, but she could see Techno was trying to talk to them. Huh, she didn't take him as the diplomatic type.
“Tommy.” She whispered. “Tommy, wake up. Something’s going on outside.”
He slowly woke up, groaning. “Lizzie…?” He muttered. “What’s… goin on?” Suddenly, his eyes snapped wide awake, and he shot up, looking much more scared than ever.
“Is it Dream? Is he here?! Did he find me?!”
“No, no, no.” She said gently. “Don’t worry. He’s not here. It’s different people who I don’t recognize.”
Tommy sat up and looked out the window, and he froze.
“What is it?” She asked. “Are we in danger?”
“I… I don’t know.” He answered honestly. “Those… Those people are from L’Manburg. The country that exiled me. And…” He pointed at a young boy with brown hair, ram horns, and burn scars. “That’s Tubbo. My… Best friend? I think? I… I don’t know. I consider him a best friend, but I don’t think he wants me as his.”
At the mention of Exile, her eyes sharpened. She couldn’t let these people near Tommy again, but Techno was currently speaking to them, and she had no idea whether or not they would be a danger to him. She didn’t know what his PvP skills were, but it was 1v4. She didn’t trust in those odds.
“Tommy, will you be okay here by yourself for a second?” She asked him. “I promise you I will come back. I just need to go out there and make sure Techno’s gonna be okay.”
Tommy looked even more panicked at that. “Please don’t hurt them.” He egged. “They’re really good friends of mine! I think. Some of them even visited me during Exile. I don’t want you to kill them, please don’t kill them.”
Her gaze softened. She didn’t really like how much he was attached to those who’d exiled him, but she’d already killed one person when he begged her not to, and even if he deserved it, she didn’t want to traumatize him further. She didn’t want to continue doing Dream’s job.
“I won’t.” She promised. “I won’t kill them. The most I’ll do is defend myself, but I won’t go any further than that.”
He closed his eyes and let out a shaky breath. “Thank you.” He said. “Seriously, thank you.”
She walked outside, only to see the figures retreating. Techno was with them, armor and winter gear gone, and iron cuffs were around his hands. She froze. Look, Techno might be a bit of an arse, but he wasn’t a complete jerk. Just… not the most emotionally intelligent and unable to see his own faults sometimes. He was also funny, considerate when the need arose, and he was a fast learner, catching onto the appropriate way to act around Tommy and not scare him further.
Also, he was quite polite. And when she thought about it, he far outweighed the L’Manburgians when it came to who she’d rather spend her time with.
“Change of plans.” She said when she went back inside the house and into the room where Tommy was. “I need to go perform a rescue operation. Will you be okay staying here by yourself?” She really didn’t want to leave him alone, especially not in the tundra, but she also didn’t want to bring him along with her on a potentially dangerous journey. She also didn’t want to upset him further by bringing him into a place that had hurt him.
“I’m a big man!” Tommy insisted. “I can take care of myself! But… Do you have to go? I can come along! I’m the strongest motherfucker on this server!”
She chuckled. “I don’t doubt you’re strong, Tommy. But It’ll be easier if it’s just one person. Look, let’s get you some potions and golden apples. I’m sure Techno won’t mind.” And if he did, Lizzie was sure she could make it up to him by resupplying him.
She went down to the storage and took a few golden apples, along with potions of strength, invisibility, regeneration, and healing. She handed them all to Tommy.
“Use these if you feel unsafe.” She instructed. “Don’t worry about Techno, I’ll pay him back. If you want or need more, they’re in his storage. And if Dream approaches or you’re in danger, type something random in your communicator. Someone near me is bound to react, so I’ll know if you're in danger even if I don’t have a communicator.” She stood up, ready to leave when-
“Wait!”
She looked at Tommy, who had grabbed her arm in a desperate hold.
“What is it? Do you need something else?”
“No. It’s just…” He sighed. “Please be safe.”
Her gaze softened.
“Don’t worry.” She promised. “I will. I’ll live for you, I promise.”
L’Manburg looked quite nice, she had to admit. Some of the builds were… yeah. But not everyone was on the same level building-wise, and some people just had different tastes as to what they liked.
It would look nicer if it weren’t for the large anvil obviously set up for an execution, though.
She saw them lead Techno to a cage made of iron bars, right where the anvil was positioned, and her blood ran cold. Crap. They were saying something about how they weren’t having a trial, but an execution. Tubbo stepped up to the podium - Prime, why did he look so young? Was he just a kid, too? Why was he dressed as a president? - and began giving a speech on how Techno had robbed their country, or something along those lines.
Her gaze was locked on the anvil. How could she stop it? Wait.
She facepalmed. How could I forget my abilities? She made a clone of herself from where she stood on her perch, seeing a man with blue eyes and golden hair make eye contact with her before she vanished. Ah, she’d been spotted. Welp. Time to move quickly.
She carefully climbed up the tower made of delicate redstone and wood. She got to the top, using her trusty bird leg and raccoon tail to help her maintain her balance. She grabbed the anvil with both of her hands, hoping to throw it away from the cage when they pulled the lever to release it.
Some weirdo in a cloak interrupted the execution and tried to save Techno with TNT, but he failed. They pulled the lever, and Lizzie forgot one crucial thing: her slime hands. The anvil went through her hands, heading right for Techno.
SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT-
Without thinking, she dove down into the cage, grabbing Techno and throwing him out of it. She went incorporeal before the anvil could hit her and take her life instead.
Oh thank god. Now time to deal with the fallout.
“HEH?”
“What the fuck?!”
“Who’s there?!”
“Someone’s got an invis potion!”
“Oooo! Mystery person! Isn’t that cool, friend?”
She surfaced from the floor, taking in the scene around her. Would revealing herself damage anything? Probably not, except that L’Manburg would label her as an enemy. But honestly, she couldn’t care less about L’Manburg, so she didn’t mind.
Also, yes, maybe she wanted to do a dramatic reveal, sue her. She was still The Enigma.
She went tangible once again, positioned over Techno protectively. She made sure her blindfold was off, blood red eyes, glaring at everyone, but not locked onto a singular target. Not yet.
She turned to look at Techno.
“Run.”
Surprisingly, he obeyed, running off. When one of the three men in aprons - a fox, she noted, did SeePeaKay have any lost family he didn’t speak about? - began to chase after, she jumped on him, smashing him through the deck and into the water. Ah, right, she forgot one of her legs was a kangaroo. That probably hurt like hell.
“Who the fuck are you?!” The man in the beanie demanded, golden wings flaring out behind him. Ah, a duck hybrid.
She glowered at him, seeing him shudder and back up. She let out a threatening chitter that sounded like a raccoon’s. She was aiming for a growl, but old habits die hard, she supposed.
“I am an Enigma.” She hissed. “And that man you just tried to execute is a good acquaintance of mine.” That may be pushing it since they’d only known each other for a day, but it sounded more threatening. “If you try to execute him again, I’ll be there. If you try to hunt me down, I’ll be there, ready to hunt you down. If you so much as think about harming either of us again, I will be there. I killed Dream, I can certainly kill all of you.”
She wasn’t willy-nilly when it came to taking lives, but they didn’t know that. And judging by the terrified looks on their faces, her threat worked.
“That was you?” The fox demanded, having recovered from his kick into the water. “How the hell did you kill Dream? That man’s a damn cockroach!”
She tilted her head, narrowing her eyes.
“If you want to find out, then try to hurt me, and I’d be more than happy to show you.”
None of them made a move to approach her.
She grinned. “Exactly.” And with that, she phased through the floor, leaving to find Techno.
“You owe me.”
The declaration Dream had made stuck in Techno’s head, even after he left. He was momentarily distracted, though, by Lizzie.
Two things. One, she was the cause of that odd death message in the chat? How did she manage to kill Dream? That man was on Techno’s level of PvP, defeating him and actually killing him was hard enough, but Lizzie didn’t seem to have any tools of her own.
Two, she had powers?!
… Did this mean he was a side character?
Nevermind that, he had to get back to the cabin. His arm was bleeding, and he could trust that Lizzie could get back safely, if she had powers of all things.
His chat, though, was a lot less calm about it all.
Actually, they were going crazy. Crazy enough that he was getting a migraine. He couldn’t get home if he had a migraine.
Sometime along the way back, he met up with Lizzie.
“Techno, are you alright?” She asked him.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” He brought a hand up to his head. “It’s just the voices.”
“Voices?”
He froze. He didn’t mean to say that.
“How about I tell you when we get back to the cabin, and you explain to me what that whole thing at the execution was?”
“... Fair enough.”
When they got back, Tommy was fast asleep, though Techno regarded her with a raised eyebrow when he saw all the empty potion bottles and half-eating golden apples around him.
“Hey, don’t look at me like that.” She raised her hands. “I promised him I’d pay you back.”
“You better.” He muttered, but it didn’t have any real malice behind it.
“So…” Lizzie sat down at the table. “Voices?”
Techno sighed and sat down across from her. “Yeah. It’s basically what it says on the tin: I have voices in my head that speak to me a lot, though recently I’ve been tryin’ to block them out. They encourage me to do things like war and violence, and I was trying to retire and go full pacifist before the Butcher Army showed up.”
“The L’Manburgians?”
“Yeah, them. They came back with a vengeance after the execution, and sometimes it can give me a headache or a migraine. Really annoyin’, honestly.” He shrugged. “Now, tell me about your main character powers.”
“Main character-?” Lizzie snorted. “Alright then. Well, do you know about void creatures?”
He nodded. He had vaguely heard about them from Phil, when he was teaching Techno about the many different types of players there were.
“Well, that’s what I am. See, I come from a server called Afterlife SMP. Basically whenever we die, we’re reincarnated as a new origin with special powers. We have 10 lives each, and I’m currently on my 6th one as an Enigma.”
She continued. “I can stare things to death, go through walls, have x-ray vision, permanent night vision, can go completely invisible as long as I leave a clone of myself behind, and since I’m an amalgamation of all my past lives, I can occasionally use a minor version of their abilities.”
“... That’s so OP. You have the kind of powers admins fear.”
She laughed. “I wouldn’t say that exactly, and I am nerfed a little bit in the sense that mobs feel uneasy when around me, and I can’t hold weapons like swords or axes. They’re too heavy, so they fall right through my hands. It’s the same deal with bows and arrows, my hands are too sticky to use them.”
Oh. That explained why Techno felt so uneasy around her and why she could intimidate him so much. Being a Piglin hybrid meant her ability worked on him as well. The uncomfortable feeling had been slowly fading away the longer he spent around her, but whenever she looked at him without the blindfold, he felt that primal fear wash over him.
“That sucks.” He noted. “That means you can’t use a blade, like, at all. You’re forced to use weapons that aren’t made for combat.”
“Yeah, but my eyes are my own blade.” She grinned, before it faltered. “Honestly, the only thing I’m super sad about is the uneasy thing. Since mobs feel uneasy around me, I can’t tame pets or trade with villagers.”
… Okay, that was really depressing, actually. Even his chat was expressing sadness over the idea of not being able to get an animal companion, or having a cute little cat (Chat’s words, not his) run away from you. Having a dog, an animal known for its loyalty, run away at the very sight of you? Hell on Earth.
And the villager thing? Horribly inconvenient. Techno relied on his villagers for a lot of things, making a player unable to use an incredibly valuable resource was almost cruel.
“But like I was saying,” she continued, as if she hadn’t said something incredibly depressing. “I’m a void creature, and I’m not very welcome back on my own server, as my origin made people despise me over there. A few of my… old friends confronted me and tried to kill me, and I ended up glitching out into the void and into this server.”
Techno shifted, a bit uncomfortable at that. He knew a thing or two about betrayal, it was one of the worst things you could experience, having your trust broken in two by your once-allies. You expect pain to come from an enemy, but never your friends.
“That’s pretty much it.” Lizzie shrugged. “Now I’m just trying to find out how to get back home. Once I make sure Tommy’s safe, of course. And I don’t really trust Dream to take me back to my server, especially since our first impression was me killing him.”
He winced. Yeah, probably not the greatest idea, especially if you need the admin in question to get home.
“So…” She trailed off awkwardly. “What now?”
“Oh, I was just thinking about that.” He grinned. “Well, I need to get my stuff back. L’Manburg still has it, after all. So I’m probably goin’ to have to commit some minor terrorism in the near future. I was thinkin’ about havin’ you and Tommy help me out with that-”
“Absolutely not.” Lizzie said immediately. “Not because I’m morally opposed to it, but because Tommy needs time to heal, not to immediately be thrust into a conflict.”
Techno opened his mouth to speak when-
“It’s okay, Liz.” They both turned towards the staircase to see Tommy there, obviously having just woken up from his nap. Although he looked tired, there was something determined in those eyes. Something fierce.
“I want to help Techno.” He said. “You don’t understand this, but it’s important, trust me. I… I’ll also be able to get my discs back.”
Lizzie hesitated. Then, quieter, she said, “... alright then. I don’t understand why you want some random discs back, but I won’t try to stop you. But I’ll be joining you both to make sure you don’t do anything too irresponsible.”
Techno grinned. “Excellent.” He stood up, pushing in his chair. “Today, we prepare. Tomorrow, we go to L’Manburg to commit some little war crimes.”
