Chapter 1: Porter and Pip

Chapter Text

Everyone ran from him. It was strange. Of course in this awful place, Bendy understood the need for caution. Danger and horrific death waited around every corner, and every sound could spell disaster. Still, it made living down there lonely. It was hard to make friends when everyone just turned and ran in the opposite direction when they saw him.

Everyone except that oddball Porter. When they first met, Porter didn't even acknowledge his name. Bendy introduced himself and the man glossed over it entirely. As they shook hands, the inky old man just wagged his head and chuckled. "What a dandy lil pipsqueak. Say, Pip, you wouldn't have seen a satchel laying anywhere hereabouts would ya?"

Bendy accepted the nickname with pride. It was a bit confusing at first, but he didn't mind. He hummed happily to himself as he searched for Porter's satchel. He had a friend!

"Ah, there it is!" Porter lit up when he saw Bendy returning with the bag. "Thanks for finding it, Pip. You sure saved my behind!" He patted the little toon between his horns. "Say, you deserve a reward! Here. I got some pens you can have." He pushed a fistfull of pens into Bendy's hands. "So long now, Pip. You take care!" Porter gave a two-finger salute and then he was gone.

The toon laid out the pens in a row on the floor of his little room. There were various kinds, all still full of ink. Some black and some lighter. Bendy was thrilled. This would last him a long time. And a couple pens were super high-end too, the ones filled with the sweet ink! He bit the end off a pen and happily sucked the contents like it was a candy straw.

One of the pens wasn't quite right, though. It wasn't a pen at all - it was wooden, and Bendy smelled something dusty and bitter on it rather than ink. He frowned, puzzled, and tried scraping the sharp end on the ground. It drew just like a pen despite not having ink.

Bendy hummed with interest. His signature sunny smile came back as he kept scribbling away on the wooden floor. Maybe this would be useful after all!

Chapter Text

Soon, Bendy found someone else who didn't run from him. Well, at first she did run, but it turned out to be a game. He was headed to scavenge around one of the workrooms on the west side of the Studio. Bendy was halfway down a long hall when an ink blob up ahead moved. He jumped in alarm, nearly spilling his bag everywhere.

The murky girl stared at the little toon for a second, then she dashed up the hall into the workroom and slipped around the corner. At least it wasn't coming after him. But Bendy's legs were still shaking from that startle! He gulped nervously, then gathered his courage and set his face in a determined frown. The workroom usually had paper, and he wanted paper so he could learn to draw on it. He wouldn't let some unarmed ink girl stop him!

Still shaking a bit, he peered through the doorway, scanning the room. It seemed empty, and Bendy sighed in relief. He started looking through boxes and drawers, keeping his guard up and checking surroundings every so often. With his back to the wall so nobody could sneak up on him, Bendy opened a drawer and checked the contents. It was mostly scraps of trash and dried ink, but he found a small stack of paper at the bottom. Jackpot! He grinned as he stuffed the paper in his bag. Maybe there was more in the other desk.

When he bent over to look in the lowest drawer, he found her. The inky girl was crouched under a desk and started giggling happily upon seeing him. "You found me! Alright, now its your turn." she said, clapping her hands with glee. "Run and hide and I'll find you!"

Bendy was hesitant, but finally smiled at seeing how excited the girl was. She covered her eyes. "One, two, three, four...." and Bendy ran to find a good hiding place.

Sitting under an ink puddle would be cheating, he figured. Looking up at the corner of the hall, he grinned as an idea struck him. Bendy was good at getting into weird places!

He clambered up on top of one of the rafters as she stopped counting and called out "Ready or not, here I come!" The toon made sure none of his body was visible over the edges of the rafter and silently giggled. He was hiding right under her nose -- over her head!

The girl ran underneath him a few times, totally oblivious, checking behind dressers and doors instead of looking up. It was lucky Bendy wasn't able to make noise, with all the laughing he was doing!

It took a few minutes before the inky girl took notice of the ceiling and started craning her head to get a better look. She stood on the baseboards and caught a glimpse of Bendy. "Aha! I found you! You're it now." as Bendy dropped down, she smiled and pointed at herself. "I'm Heidi! You're good at this game. Okay, try and find me!" And then dashed off again to find a hiding place.

The two played together for hours, exhausting all the hiding spots in the safer side of the halls. Bendy eventually had to head back to his home -- travelling was more dangerous during 'night' hours. Heidi reluctantly stopped playing and waved goodbye. "Okay....I'll see you later, yeah? Be safe!"

Bendy emptied his bag in his closet and laid the contents out in a row. The paper was a grand find. He got right to drawing, starting a sketch of the people he'd met so far. Big goggles and an inky beard on Porter, long hair and a big bow for Heidi. He couldn't quite draw himself to his satisfaction, though. He kept scuffing the smile he draw by accident, making it too big. And when he tried to pencil in the dark ink of his horns, it smeared outside the lines even when he erased it.

Frustrated, Bendy tossed the pencil down. He didn't look like that. He decided to try again later, and settled down to sleep. It had been a pretty tiring day. The toon dozed off and Z's floated lazily above his head as he silently snored.

Something was pulling on him and it hurt.

Bendy thrashed away from the searing pain and screamed. For some reason it came out deeper than a scream should, hurting his throat. But it was nothing compared to his chest.

He was skewered. Something was stuck through him - it was dragging through his body, chewing through gobs of ink, through him - and he screamed again and tried to free himself. What was happening? He couldn't see, he could only feel the tool drilling through his ink and shattering bone and liquifying everyth--

Bendy shot awake, spraying droplets of ink everywhere as he flailed for balance. He was awake but still blinded like in the dream and it panicked him. Bendy hyperventilated silently, wiping desperately at his face. Ink was pouring off his body from the stress and it felt too hot and awful and it was in his eyes. Until he could see he wasn't sure if he was still in the nightmare or not. His body still felt weird and off like it did in the dream. All icky and melted.

In his panic, Bendy was in flight mode. He reached out for a wall and slipped into the ink there, travelling through the conduits for somewhere safer. Somewhere far away.

As if he could hide from a nightmare.

Chapter Text

When Bendy could finally clear the ink out of his eyes for a second and look around, he was dismayed to realize someone else was in the room. A lost one wearing overalls sat on the chair mere feet from him. He was wearing a weird cartoon mask so it was hard to tell, but he seemed just as shocked to see the toon.

Bendy froze. He didn't want to fight, wasn't sure he even could go up against a lost one unarmed. Especially now, when he was so wobbly and melty he could barely keep his shape. Panic wasn't helping matters any. Ink kept running down over his left eye and face and smearing all over the floor.

The masked man seemed flustered to the point of terror. "My - my lord! You've returned for me! I - I must apologize for being woefully unprepared for your arrival, I - I don't have even an offering. Besides my life of course!" he added hastily. When Bendy didn't respond, still just staring in confusion, he got flustered and waved his hands aimlessly. "It - it's Samuel, my lord. Sammy, they always called me. My apologies, I assumed you'd remember a mere mortal like me!" he bowed again, a bit desperately, still unsure if he should risk standing up and aggravating the devil or not.

Bendy didn't really understand all this my-lord stuff. The guy was kind of scaring him, to be honest. He didn't seem aggressive but he was so intense anyways. And that mask was super creepy. The toon didn't have the capacity to deal with him, so he rubbed his eyes to avoid having to look at Sammy. He was still grouchy and melty from the nightmare too and it felt icky. White ink sticking to drippy black ink. Ugh.

Too tired to go look for another safe hiding spot, Bendy settled down against a stack of boxes behind the masked man's chair and shut his eyes. He'd just rest here a minute or two. At least until that feverish heat went down a bit and his ink stopped dripping off him.

The silence was getting to Sammy. He slowly inhaled and started plucking at his guitar, almost too quietly to hear. He muffled the strings and went up and down the scale.

Bendy opened his eyes again as he heard the sound. It was pleasant. He didn't hear much music around the Studio, and this guy just made it up? He scooted over a bit closer, looking up at the guitar curiously.

Sammy quickly noticed how much Bendy liked the guitar playing. He shifted the instrument on his lap and started strumming something with more structure. A slow, simple tune like a lullaby. He timidly plucked the strings, glancing at the little devil out of the corner of his eye to see if his lord was pleased.

He most certainly was. The smile came back to Bendy's face and he sighed tiredly. It reminded him of some of the recordings he'd heard. Cheerful and soothing. It straightened out the wrinkles and snarls in his mind and made everything nice and quiet. He calmed down enough that his ink stopping dripping and his skin didn't feel icky anymore.

After a while, the soft melody lulled the little toon back to sleep. He had only been asleep a few hours before the nightmare roused him. Bendy drifted off, head drooping to the side until it rested against Sammy's leg, and cartoony Z's drifted above his head.

On the bright side, his lord was satisfied and had fallen asleep. On the other side....Sammy was kind of trapped where he was now. There was no way in hell he could move and disturb the tiny incarnation of his master. Only thing to do was keep playing, he figured.

In the end, Sammy dozed off too. His mask slid down behind his face and he began snoring quietly.

When Sammy woke up, Bendy was gone.
He wasn't sure how it worked, but the ink he'd dripped everywhere did something screwy to the power in his cell. The lights flickered and died, and the door malfunctioned and slowly scraped halfway open before Sammy's eyes.

"....its true. My lord has set me free!"
