Chapter 1: Falling Star

Chapter Text

From red to blue to red once more, stars and rains fall; when at last they cease, the sun parts a weeping sky and the land known as Etheirys stills, for a time.

You've regrets aplenty; the humidity of Thavnair layers itself in a glistening, heavy sheen across your brow, its beading droplets concealing the tears that threaten to escape their tightly held confines.  Unseen s ouls, broken and lost, doomed to fate's inescapable cycle - such are the ancient laws etched into star by no master - swirl at your feet and through the skies. It is to them - gold and white and red and blue, and the others you did not know so truly in this life - you owe the strength of a smile, that you might someday meet once more, their next journey beginning with joy in place of sorrow.

But Fate, fond as it is of its quirks, has decided that 'someday' is sooner than you'd anticipated.

Through the darkness, a star falls.

When you wake, it is as a dream.  You’ve been summoned into a fantasy, given a second chance, like the tales of heroes granted a gift from the Gods: the ability to fix their many mistakes - or, more likely, further doom their world in the attempt.

(you know such tales well; he succumbed when the promise of a despairingly bleak fate broke his tenuous grasp on control - the result of your whispers about futures yet unwritten)

Your fantasy is a dream without end, and when bells pass cleanly into suns it becomes apparent that the events are too real - too whole - to be a vague approximations born from memory.

It is only then that you step aside and consider your options.

Some things are destined, you decide, and changing them will alter the star’s course.

Your heart rends at the prospect.
