Mulan met Li Shang when they were 7 and 10. After they began to grow up, at 17 Li Shang had to go to the military, but Mulan dutifully stayed at home. After years she was still unsuccessful with men, but it seems like Li Shang already had a fiance, someone with equal social status and the proper bearing.
