Work Text:

Félix spotted them mid-performance from the corner of his eye.

At first, he thought it was a dream. Fawn was not the kind of girl he expected to see around, especially out of her supersuit, even if they spent an abnormal amount of time dancing on rooftops and joking about running away.

His heart stuttered when he stole another glance and became sure that it was really her in her civilian form, walking hand-in-hand with a little girl who dug her heels into the ground, refusing to leave the funfair.

Félix was sure that she had not seen him. Little Fawn tended to make doe eyes when she pretended not to know things.

Right now, she was as matter-of-fact as she could be, explaining to who he assumed was her younger sister why they had to go.

How many rules were they breaking?

The little girl opened her mouth and let out the loudest, most powerful wail Félix had ever had the misfortune of hearing. “But I wanted to see the acrobats!”

Fawn had never looked more helpless than when she looked nervously around, then kneeled as she tried to hush the little girl.

“Brie! We cannot get caught!”

“But I wanted to see the acrobats!” Brie’s eyes welled up. Her voice quivered. “O-or the magicians! I want to see a magic trick! You PROMISED!”

“I know, Brie,” Fawn remained gentle. “I know, but we also promised Nan we’d be back an hour ago.”

“You LIED!”

“Brie, please !”

“I NEED to know if magic is real!”

Félix glanced at the busy street and deducted he could leave his post for a minute or two.

“Hey, Kaalki, you up for a trick or two?”

He grabbed a pack of cards, then slipped it into his pocket. He began heading over without waiting for an answer from his partner-in-crime-and-magic, looking more confident than he felt.

He ran a hand through his hair.

“Excuse me, may I?” He kneeled beside Fawn whose eyes widened the instant she recognized him. He winked at her. “I couldn’t help but overhear… Do you want to see a magic trick?”

“Yes!”

Brie fixed her position and posture in an instant. She appeared more out of place all nice and proper than while protesting. Her gaze fixated on the stranger, trusting the robe-wearing blonde solely on the basis that her sister hadn’t banished him into nonexistence yet.

“Well, I’m a wizard,” Félix spoke, bringing out the cards. He slid them out of the pack and began shuffling the deck. “Here, pick one!”

Brie chose the card with a bouncing fox. She held it uncertainly, unsure whether he wanted her to conceal or show it to him.

Félix took it from her.

“Now, watch me.” He threw the card up in the air where it disappeared between pigeons and smoke.

“Aaaaaand?”

“Check your pocket, little lady.” Félix saw his boss unhappily marching towards his stand and stood up. “Have a good day!”

Fawn straightened her legs, too.

“Thank you!” She mouthed at him, as he rushedly backed away from them to get back to his post before his cranky superior.

Félix grinned and blew her a kiss when Brie pulled the card out of her pocket, baffled beyond belief.

We're on each other's team.
