Work Text:
Of all the alphas Kaito could have gotten feelings for, it just had to be Hakuba Saguru, didn’t it.
This was a fact which very much annoyed the omega, so he decided the best solution was to ignore the problem. He wouldn’t acknowledge he had feelings for Saguru, and eventually, they would pass. Hopefully.
“Personally,” Aoko said one day as the two of them sat in her room, Aoko on a chair and Kaito laying on the bed, “I don’t get why you’re so determined to ignore your feelings for Hakuba-kun.”
Kaito glared at his fellow omega. “Well, I don’t want to acknowledge the feelings, so yes, I will ignore them, thank you very much.”
“Hakuba-kun isn’t a bad person,” Aoko protested. “There’s no reason for you to be ashamed of your feelings.”
“He’s a detective, ” Kaito complained. “I’m a magician. He’s just going to expose all my magic tricks and I will live a very miserable life. So yes, I am going to be ashamed of my feelings. Just like you should be ashamed of yours, falling for a witch and all.”
“Akako-chan isn’t a witch!” Aoko protested, her face red. “You need to be more respectful of all your classmates, Kaito!”
“I don’t see the point,” Kaito muttered, rolling over in Aoko’s bed and burying his face into the pillow.
Aoko groaned and seemed to give up on the topic for the rest of the day, thankfully. Kaito would not be very happy if she brought it up again.
The day after Kaito’s next heist, Kaito arrived early to class. He couldn’t sleep anyway, so why wait around?
He figured out the reason why when Saguru was the next in class.
Groaning, Kaito dropped his head on the desk. Saguru’s alpha scent flowed over the classroom and Kaito’s face turned a bit red - not that he’d let Saguru see that. The scent grew stronger until Kaito could tell Saguru was standing right next to him.
“Kuroba-kun,” Saguru spoke, sounding amused. “Tired after last night?”
“I told you,” Kaito muttered. “I’m not Kid.”
“I never said you were,” Saguru said pleasantly.
Kaito groaned and turned his head away slightly from Saguru. The scrape of a seat on the floor indicated that Saguru sat in the neighboring desk, which was Aoko’s, but she wasn’t here yet so sure, why not steal her seat, not like Saguru was the detective and Kaito was the thief. Jerk.
Kaito was horrified to realize he thought the last sentence with affection. He felt small vibrations in his throat, but rationalized it as a growl of anger or something. They would go away soon. Of course they would.
“Kuroba-kun,” Saguru started hesitantly. “Are you okay?”
“Of course I am,” Kaito snapped, still without looking at him.
“Alright,” Saguru accepted warily, and continued sitting in silence until other people started entering the classroom. Finally, he retreated to his seat.
“I figured out why you aren’t in love with me,” Akako said to Kaito one weekend, as if that were a perfectly normal way to start a conversation.
Kaito stared at her then said, “You came to my front door at these cursed hours of the morning… to tell me this?”
“Well, of course,” she said. “I have plans this afternoon, after all.”
Kaito sighed and let her in.
Akako immediately plopped down on one of his sofas and looked at him. “So, about why you aren’t in love with me. It’s because you’re gay.”
Kaito almost choked. “Huh?”
“You’re gay,” Akako repeated. “You only like men.”
“Well, yeah,” Kaito said, regaining his bearings. “I thought that was obvious.”
Akako narrowed her eyes. “Not obvious to me, until I saw you interacting with Hakuba-kun the other day. You may not be in love with me - which is unfortunate, I am a very gorgeous alpha - but you are certainly in love with him.”
Kaito’s face flushed. “What- I am not in love with Hakuba!”
Akako rolled her eyes. “I’m not going to believe your denials, Kuroba-kun. It is all very clear to me. I’ve connected the dots.”
“You didn’t connect shit!”
“That’s correct,” Akako said pleasantly. “I didn’t connect shit, I connected the dots.”
Kaito just couldn’t with her.
Saguru got a bit too close for comfort during the next heist.
While Kaito was picking up his hang glider from where he had stored it on the roof, he turned around and immediately came face to face with Saguru. Face suddenly flushed, Kaito stepped back and looked up somewhat to make eye contact with the alpha. “Tantei-san, I see you have figured out where I’m hiding,” he said pleasantly.
“I have,” Saguru said. Thankfully, he also took a step back. “The taskforce is a few minutes behind me. If you don’t manage to escape, then… You’re done for.”
Kaito licked up lips in anticipation of the chase. “Sounds fun.” He began running toward the edge of the roof.
Immediately, Saguru’s footsteps fell in behind Kaito’s, and it didn’t take too long for the detective to tackle Kaito. Gasping, Kaito collapsed onto the rooftop, back pressing against the ground, and stared up at Saguru, both boys panting for breath. Kaito saw that his hat had fallen off and was lying a foot away, but thankfully, his monocle still stayed on. Not that it mattered much with Saguru, what with him knowing Kid's identity already, at least unofficially.
Kaito’s eyes finally met Saguru’s, and he felt his face flush. He immediately tried to pull it back, but he could tell that Saguru already noticed, and red was starting to creep along his own face as well. The vibrating sound from before, in the classroom, began to reappear, and that was what made Saguru suddenly pull away from Kaito. “A bit too close,” he muttered quickly, getting to his feet and offering a hand to Kaito. Unable to think clearly, the detective took it. “You should, ah, go now.”
“I… should,” Kaito agreed, backing away, before running to the edge and jumping off, activating his hang glider before he could reach the ground.
The next day, as class dismissed, Kaito was about to walk home with Aoko when he was held back by a hand on his arm. His face flushed as he smelled the scent and immediately realized it was Saguru behind him.
“I need to speak to Kuroba-kun alone for a moment,” Saguru said to Aoko. “Can you excuse us?”
Aoko gave Kaito a meaningful glance and said, “Of course! I’ll wait for you at the front gates, Kaito!” She then skipped away.
Kaito turned to face Saguru. “So. What is it?” he asked.
Saguru paused, as if unsure how to say it. “Did you know,” he started, finally, “you always purr like crazy when you’re around me?”
Kaito’s blush immediately grew darker. “Wha- e-excuse me?” he stammered.
A faint blush grew on Saguru’s face too. “It’s true,” he admitted. “The last heist, the time in the classroom before that… and so many other times. It’s happened. And so, uh, do you like me?”
Kaito buried his face in his hands, unsure how to respond to that.
“I understand if that question is too hard to answer right now,” Saguru spoke quickly. “If you want, I can just leave now.”
“It’s fine,” Kaito murmured, tearing his hands away from his face and looking at Saguru in the eyes. “I… I do,” he said slowly. “I like you.”
“Ah,” Saguru breathed out. “Well, I like you too.” And then, he pulled Kaito in a hug.
The omega stiffened at first, unsure how to react, before he slowly relaxed and hugged Saguru back, purring once more.
Maybe he should admit to his feelings more often, because this? This felt good.
