Work Text:

“What’s up with your Pokémon?” Arven asked, grinding the Herba Mystica into a fine powder. Every time Juliana saw him she was amazed by the array of cookware he carried in his huge backpack. Juliana wondered what it was like to make more than just sandwiches.

“Miraidon?” Julianna asked. She looked at her own bag, pulling it onto her lap.

“No, your Tandemaus. Don’t you have just one?” Arven said, pointing.

“No, I have two, it’s a pair,” Juliana replied, going through her things. Maybe her mom had packed something to make fancier food with. It seemed as though there was always way more room, and way more things, in her bag than she thought there were.

“It’s always a pair, but you have two,” Arven said.

“Yeah, two is a pair.”

“I know two is a pair! But you have two pairs.”

“No, no, two is the whole pair, it’s not half a pair.”

“I know my math grades are bad, but they’re not that bad! Just look at your Tandemaus!” Arven cried out.

Juliana looked up from her bag. She knew what the problem was the instant she saw her Pokémon.

“Oh, that’s a Maushold. I wonder when that happened,” Juliana said.

“That’s just a pair of Tandemaus. It’s not a new Pokémon, it’s two Pokémon,” Arven said. He grimaced, pouring the effort he might have poured into grinding his teeth into grinding the Herba Mystica instead.

“Nuh-uh, that’s what Maushold looks like. It’s two big maus and two small maus,” Juliana said. She picked up the larger pair, one in each hand, then the smaller pair. “See, two big, and two small.”

“That’s just a big Tandemaus and a small Tandemaus!”

“I don’t know what to tell you, that’s what happens when they evolve,” Juliana said with a shrug.

“It didn’t glow or anything. Pokemon are supposed to glow and stuff. They go all like ‘shine, POOF, doodoododo!’ and then they’re all new!” Arven said, waving his hands in the air.

“Yeah, it’s weird that that didn’t happen,” Juliana replied. “Oh well! Hey, did you see where I put the ball with my Clodsire? I could have sworn I had six Pokémon on my team.”

Notes:

How many Maus could a Maushold hold if a Maushold could hold maus?
