Work Text:
Enid burst through the door of the house, dropping her bag on a table and shrugging off her jacket. “Honey, I’m home!” she called with a giggle.
She stepped down the hall and past the living room to peak her head into the study briefly before walking in. “Hi,” she said as she approached the dark haired girl at the desk. She pressed a kiss to her cheek. “Have you eaten?”
Wednesday finally looked away from her typewriter to glance at the blonde. She hesitated before responding. “No.”
Enid clicked her tongue. “Have you eaten anything today at all? It’s nearly 6 pm! I thought you wanted to die dramatically and violently, not slowly of starvation.”
“I’ve been busy,” she answered simply. After finishing a line on her typewriter she turned in her chair to face Enid. “But don’t feel obligated to make me food. We are a household of equally divided labor, remember.”
Enid rolled her eyes. “If me making you food is the only way you’ll eat it’s not exactly equally divided.”
Wednesday looked sheepish. “You’re right.” She stood up to meet Enid face to face and let her arms slide around the taller girl’s neck. A slow grin replaced the annoyed expression on Enid’s face. “Let’s order in.”
Enid barely had time to nod before Wednesday was leaning in to give her a slow kiss. Enid pulled back a few moments later, a little bit lovesick and a little bit suspicious. “Are you trying to distract me?”
Wednesday grinned, something that came easily around her wife after all these years. “Is it working?”
Enid shook her head, but let her arms wrap around Wednesday’s waist and pull her closer. “You need to eat, babe,” she said softly. She reached up to push some of Wednesday’s hair behind her ear. “If you don’t keep up your strength, how will your loyal fan base know what trouble Viper gets into next? You know they’re always chomping at the bit.”
Wednesday leaned forward to press a gentle kiss to the neck of the blonde followed by a nip. “There’s perhaps some other chomping I’m more motivated by.”
Enid let out a breathy laugh as Wednesday left a trail of soft kisses on her neck and jaw. “Whatever. You need to be chomping on actual food so you continue to be alive. What sounds good?”
Wednesday smirked into her throat. “You do.”
Enid pulled back slightly and tried to offer a glare to no avail. There was too much affection in her eyes, and she could never be so much as annoyed with a smiling Wednesday.
“Pizza?” Enid offered. Wednesday nodded. “Okay. I’ll order it.” As she stepped away and started back down the hall Wednesday followed her like a lost puppy.
“How was your day?” Wednesday asked.
They both sat down on the couch, Enid tapping on her phone to order the food. She replied without looking up. “It was good! I think I’ve convinced Principal Jay to finally let me add a gossip column to the paper. You know that student I was telling you about that would be perfect for it, Meg?”
Wednesday nodded. “The one who sounds remarkably like you?”
Enid just smiled. “She was excited.”
“That’s great, honey.”
Enid beamed. Even after years together, it was always an accomplishment to get a pet name out of Wednesday Addams.
“Yes. How was your day?”
“Well,” Wednesday folded her hands in her lap as she thought back on the day. “I’m almost finished with this draft. I’m a little ahead of schedule, I think. My editor didn’t want it until the 17th, I might be done by the 12th.”
“Ooh,” Enid said with a raised brow. “Time off, then?”
Wednesday nodded with an attempt at nonchalance. Enid’s eyes narrowed. “Wait, are you trying to finish early so you can go to that new exhibit on the history of torture at the museum?”
Wednesday looked away. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Is that why you’ve been working yourself to the bone this week? Wednesday!”
“It’s only going to be in town for three more weeks, Enid!”
Enid couldn’t help but chuckle. “I’m sure we could go even if you aren’t done.”
“You’ll go with me?”
Enid reached over to grab her hand. “Of course. I’m sure you’ll find a lot of errors and I’d hate to miss your explanations.”
Wednesday couldn’t stop her light blush. Before she could respond there was an abrupt knock at the door. Enid looked down at her phone. “I haven’t even checked out yet!”
Wednesday opened the door to find a teenager gripping a folder nervously. “Hello,” Wednesday greeted blankly. She turned to glance at Enid who came rushing up.
“Marcy!”
“Hi, Mrs. Addams,” the girl practically stuttered. “You told me I could drop this off here, since I live just down the street?”
“Yes! I remember.” Enid turned to Wednesday. “Marcy lives around the block so I told her she could drop off her homework on her way back from practice instead of hunting me down in the morning.”
“Hunt?” Wednesday asked. Enid ignored her and stepped forward to take the offered folder.
“Thank you!” There was an awkward beat as the girls eyes darted back to Wednesday. “This is Wednesday, my wife,” Enid explained. “The other Mrs. Addams.”
Marcy offered a half smile. “Nice to meet you.”
“The pleasure is mine,” Wednesday said, completely monotonous.
Enid offered Marcy a reassuring smile. “I promise she’s nicer than she seems. I’ll see you in class tomorrow, okay?”
Marcy nodded and started back down the path. Wednesday closed the door.
“You still make quite the first impression,” Enid commented.
Wednesday shrugged, going back to her seat on the couch. “It’s not imminent for me to maintain a relationship with your students.”
Enid sat back down next to her, finishing up their pizza order. “That’s true. But I think the ones that meet you think you’re a vampire.”
“Well, that would be on them for believing vampire stereotypes.” Wednesday let a hand roam across Enid’s shoulders. “And I’m sure they’d be shocked to learn that the gentler Mrs. Addams can turn into a murderous monster on command.”
Enid leaned into the touch, putting her phone down. “Also true.”
Wednesday stood up. “I’m going to work a little more while we wait for our food, if you don’t mind. Then we can plan to go to the museum this weekend without me worrying about it.”
Enid grinned, catching the hint of excitement in Wednesday’s mostly blank face.
“Okay.”
-
It only took two school days for a student to approach Enid with a Viper novel in hand.
“Mrs. Addams?”
Enid looked up to find a girl she wasn’t familiar with dressed in all black. “Hi, what can I do for you?”
The girl laid the book down on Enid’s desk. “Um, Marcy told me she met your wife. And I was wondering if she’s the author of this book.”
Enid bit back a grin. “She is, in fact. Did you enjoy it?”
The girl nodded.
“Would you like me to ask her to sign it?”
-
“Wednesday, guess what?” Enid asked excitedly as soon as she got home.
“Hm?”
“A student brought in a Viper novel and asked me if my wife wrote it.”
Wednesday raised a brow without looking away from her typewriter. “Oh? I didn’t know you had any students interested in the macabre.”
“It wasn’t one of my students, she’s friends with Marcy, from the other night.”
“Ah.”
“I told her you would sign her book.”
Wednesday tried to glare but Enid knew better than to believe it. As much as she knew Wednesday hated admitting it, she enjoyed having fans. “Fine. But don’t make it a habit.”
Enid rolled her eyes. “Whatever.”
Wednesday found a sharpie in her desk and took the book Enid held out. “You should ask her what she thought of the third murder scene. I never felt like I got it quite right.”
Enid grinned. “I could invite her over for dinner if you want. Or you could come to my office hours one day.”
“Hm,” Wednesday considered, reaching out the push some of Enid’s hair back. “I suppose I could come by for a while on Thursday. I don’t trust anyone who likes my work not to be a psychopath and I don’t want them in our home.”
Enid shook her head. “You already live here.”
Wednesday grinned. “Don’t flatter me, Enid.”
-
When the girl returned to Mrs. Addams classroom to retrieve her book she was not expecting to see both Mrs. Addams’s sitting quietly at the desk. Enid could see the surprise on her face.
“Surprise,” Enid said with a grin and a quiet laugh. “Wednesday agreed to come say hello.”
Enid elbowed her wife, who offered a small smile. “Hello.”
The girl approached slowly, stopping when she reached the other side of the desk. “Hi. Um, thank you for signing my book.”
Despite her mostly blank face, Enid could sense her nerves. She pushed the book towards her silently.
“It was no problem,” Wednesday replied coolly. “I don’t meet many fans your age. I’d love to hear your thoughts if you have a moment.”
The girl hid a grin. “Okay.”
Enid but back a smile of her own as she tried her best to focus on the papers she was grading while the teenager and her wife discussed the gruesome details of the novel.
The bell rang a bit later, causing the girl to stand up. “I better go. It was nice meeting you, um-“
“You can call me Wednesday.” She nudged Enid. “Would be confusing otherwise.”
“It was nice meeting you, Wednesday. I’ll see you around, Mrs. Addams.”
Enid grinned. “Lovely meeting you, Samantha. I’ll see you around.”
Samantha nodded and rushed out the door to her class. Enid turned to Wednesday. “That was nice.”
Wednesday nodded. She mostly looked somber, as always, but Enid could see the joy just under the surface. “It’s nice to meet younger fans, albeit concerning.”
Enid laughed. “Yeah. I’ll keep an eye on her.”
Wednesday stood, leaning over the desk to give Enid a quick kiss. “I’ll see you at home.”
“Bye, sweetheart,” Enid replied, relishing the cringe she got at the name.
-
Enid loved going with Wednesday to museums. She loved the passion she heard in her wife’s voice. She usually loved at least some of the things she was bound to learn. And most of all she loved that it was the longest Wednesday ever allowed her to hold her hand in public. Enid relished very second.
“That is absolutely not how maces were invented,” Wednesday commented after reading a detailed sign next to a glass case. “You can clearly see how that information does not line up with this artifact.”
Enid grinned and ran her thumb over Wednesday’s hands gripped in her own. “Pray tell, my love.”
Wednesday shot her an affectionate look, squeezing her hand before going off on a long tangent.
As Wednesday talked about various errors and competing histories they wondered around the museum. Suddenly Enid interrupted with a loud gasp. Wednesday gave her a half confused, half annoyed stare.
“Sorry,” Enid whispered before pointing excitedly. “Look over there!”
Wednesday turned to see what she was pointing at: two teenagers looking at a display of guillotines, one in all black and one in all pink. “Are they students of yours?”
“That’s Meg!” Enid whispered. “And Samantha!”
Wednesday nodded. “I’m not surprised someone who enjoys my work would enjoy this display. I should see if she’s aware of the errors.” Wednesday went to take a step towards the girls but Enid tugged her back so hard she almost fell.
“No!” Enid gasped again, but thankfully quieter this time. “They’re holding hands! I think they’re on a date. Oh my god that’s adorable.”
Wednesday couldn’t help the small grin on her face. “They’re us.”
“What?” Enid asked, turning from staring at the girls to look at Wednesday.
“They’re us. Meg is the girl who you always say is like a younger you, and I can tell based on her fashion choices. And Samantha is the only teenager I’ve ever met who knows the top five best way to murder someone.”
Enid had to cover her mouth to quiet her excitement. “Oh my god, you are so right. They’re just like us. Oh my god, oh my god, they’re so cute.”
Wednesday chuckled softly. “I hope they didn’t have to deal with a murderous Hyde to find each other.”
Enid grinned. “I hope so too. Oh my god they’re coming over, act natural.”
The girls turned around and both offered shy smiles at seeing the older couple.
“Mrs. Addams, hi!” Meg offered, looking to Enid.
“Hi, Meg!” Enid answered. “How’re you? Hello, Samantha.”
Samantha offered a nod.
Meg excitedly told Enid about how Samantha had asked her out seemingly out of the blue and they were having a great time.
“Samantha knows so much about all the artifacts, some of the signs are even wrong!”
Enid could practically feel the approval radiating off of Wednesday.
“That’s so wonderful, Meg. I’m glad you’re having a good time.”
To nearly everyone’s surprise, Wednesday stepped forward to address Samantha. “Glad to hear you’re familiar with your torture history, Samantha. And I’m glad you seem to be having a good time with Meg.”
Samantha showed only a small smile. “Thank you. I, uh,” she reached up to rub the back of her neck. “I actually only got up the nerve to finally ask Meg out after seeing you two together, Mrs. Addams.”
Enid could barely contain her excitement, squeezing Wednesday’s hand so hard her fingers smushed together. “Oh, that’s great. I’m so happy to be some representation for you of a happy queer relationship.”
Samantha shook her head. “I have lots of happy queer representation. I needed to see people who were as different as you two are. I couldn’t imagine someone as…bubbly as Meg liking me back, since I’m so…”
“Murderous?” Wednesday offered excitedly. Enid glared at her.
Samantha chuckled. “Sure, yes. But seeing you two made me realize it was possible.”
Enid couldn’t be more over the moon if she was wolfed out. “That is so nice, Samantha. I’m thrilled we could help.”
Wednesday nodded enthusiastically. “I wish you both the best of luck. And I hope to read your novels someday, Samantha, or visit you in prison.” It was silent until Wednesday continued with a sigh. “I’m only kidding about the prison. You both seem very lovely.”
Samantha was blushing now. “Thank you, Wednesday.”
“Well,” Meg tugged on Samantha’s hand. “We have more to see! See you in class, Mrs. Addams.”
“Bye, girls.”
As soon as they were out of earshot Enid let out a soft sigh. “I can’t believe that just happened. We inspired her. That’s so cool.”
Wednesday nodded.
“Wednesday Addams,” Enid said playfully, “do you have tears in your eyes? You thought that was just as sweet as I did, didn’t you?”
Wednesday shook her head, avoiding eye contact. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Enid clicked her tongue. “Liar. Are you ready to go?”
As the couple headed towards the exit Enid overheard Meg and Samantha with her sensitive hearing. Samantha explained the issues with the mace display almost verbatim to how Wednesday had, and when Meg replied with “that’s so cool, sweetheart,” Enid could practically hear her cringe.
