Chapter 1: Asking people out is the worst

Chapter Text

Luz Swallowed. She was sweating. Why was she sweating. She had just showed. Why was this so hard. “Luz, you dummy” she said to herself “you've got this. You've already done the hard part, its not like she doesn't know. Luz, you dummy, your already dat-”

“Luz?”

“ARUGH!” Luz nearly fell off her desk chair as her cotton candy haired girlfriend interrupted her thoughts. “Am-Amity!”. Luz rearranged her face, trying to find the composer that had fled her entirely. “Wha-what are you doing here”

To Amity's credit, she managed to look not entirely perplexed by this line of questioning, despite the fact she was standing at the foot of her cot in the room they shared. “I’m…getting ready for the day?”

Luz’s eyes were wide as dinner plates whilst a blush invaded her every feature. “Yes! Of course! Annnnnnnnnnd…so must I! Bye” luz rushed out past Amity. “What on earth…?”

“I think she wants to ask you out.”. Vee's head flopped over the edge of her bunk. Amity, once again to her credit, maintained her composure. “Why…why do you think that?” said Amity, perplexed

“Weeellllllllll” Vee started, “one” she counted on her fingers “she was sitting there and pulling weird faces for the last five minutes. I didn't want to interrupt her” Vee did look conflicted at that, “and 2, its a thing they do here in Gravefield, at the end of the holidays, you invite your crush to a date”.

“But Luz and i are already going out”

“yes, but have you been on a date?”

Now it was Amity's turn to blush. Between the end of the world, and then trying to figure out how to get back to the demon realm…it has been on the back burner. Oh god, she and Luz had never gone on a proper date.

“LUZ, WAIT” she said, chasing after her girlfriend

Vee sighed.

Amity rushed past Hunter, who had paused just outside the room, beet red.

He hadn't meant to eavesdrop. But he had. And now…this was the perfect opportunity. Maybe. Possibly.

“Hunter!”

Hunters brain was so caught in gears he spun around, saluting. “Captain!”.

Willow chuckled. Hunter could be so…formal. But he was very ernest. And very sweat.

“You don't have to keep being so formal you know.”

Willow was shocked a boy as pale of Hunter could turn quite such a dark shade of crimson. What was up with him.

“I uhhhh…” he swallowed hard. He had expected a few hours of notice. He had trained for years to be brave, to be skilled, why was this so scary. He screwed his courage to the sticking place. “Umm…captain! I mean, Willow. Would you do me the honor of joining me for an evening meal in accordance with the traditions of the human realm?”

Willow took a step back, stunted. Was this…was Hunter asking her out on a date. It was now the plant witche’s turn to change hues. “Hunter, i…” she twirled one of her plats around her fingers. For hunter it felt like an eternity. It was barely three seconds. “Hunter. I would love too!”

Inside, Willow squeed.

-

Vee hung over the edge of the bed and sighed. Amity and Luz would be going out. Hunter had found the courage to ask Willow. And also she wanted to do was ask someone out her self. But she didn't feel…brave enough. It was so scary! And she had already done a lot of very brave things. No. Best to spend the night here watching nature documentaries with Camila - no, she corrected herself, - with mom, and gus.

Still, if only she could work up the courage to talk to marsha, that would be so nice. Still, whilst marsha was very kind, and sweat, she was sure they hardly even no-

“VEE! THERE'S A MARSHA HERE FOR YOU”

Vee fell to the floor with a loud crash, and had to take a second to hold her form. Vee felt like a rabbit in the headlights. Marsha? Here? Now!?! Vee felt a squeak escape her self. Why now! “Coming Mom!”, yelled vee, rushing down the stairs. On her way out the room she caught her reflection. She was a shapeshifter, how was her hair such a mess?

As she approached the front door, Camilia looked at Vee, whispering “was that you crashing, are you ok?”. Vee smiled nervously “yea”.

Camila kept it to herself, but she could see the nervous fear in Vee’s eyes, that not of fear for her live, but fear, perhaps, for her nasiant love life. Camila surprised a chuckle. On the one hand, having a house full of teenagers could, at times, be a nightmare. No snacks she got lasted very long at all, for example, but…watching young romance blossom all around her was very sweet, even whilst she readied herself to be a shoulder to cry one for at least one of them…

Vee leaned against the open doorway, contriving to look as casual as possible.Masha could see right through it. For a moment, Vee felt like Marsha could see through anything they wanted. Vee cleared her throat. “Hi!”

Oh god, she thought, I sound like such a dork.

“Hi Vee. I know your kind of new too the town, so i don't know if you know, bu-” Vee blushed so hard she thought she might melt “oh, i see you do know”. Marsha smiled like a cat who got the cream. “Well then-” she faulted for a second, before finding her resolve again “well then, i wondered if you wanted to get some coffee tonight. My treat”. She winked, and used all here will power to let Vee give a reply rather then taking her increasingly lumines face as an answer

“Oh, i would-” Vee cleared her throat again, trying to lower it a little, sound cooler, “i would love too”. Her dork feelings increased. “Well then, its a date, i’ll meet you at robins roasts 5ish tomorrow?” Vee’s words failed her this time, and she just nodded, mute. “See you then”, a second wink as she left

Marsha thought to themselves as they left…did I lay that on a little thick?

Nahh.

Downstairs, Luz hide behind the kitchen doorway, hyperventilation only slightly, taking a moment to regain her composer. God she was such a dork sometimes. She an Amity had been dating. They were going out. Just because they had never…been on a date. What with Belos. It didn't mean that asking to go out on said date should be scary.

But last year, and the year before, the end of year dates had been such a big deal. Ofc, cheesy Luz never got a date, and people would whisper about it, about how she had asked out Dean Hanson with a poem, and which was a dumb way to ask someone out, and what kind of a girl did the asking anyway.

“Luz?”

The otherside of the doorway, taking her time now, somewhat like someone try to free a stranded rabbit, Amity walked slowly in. “Amity!” said Luz, smiling, hiding the sudden well of anxiety she had discovered.

Amity, for her part, put her hands behind her back, hiding the nerve fidgeting, trying to present the serene swan her parents her taught her to be, that she slipped towards when she was nervous, like a defense mechanism.

“So…Amity…i was wondering…you know, if you…wanted to go to town with me. Tomorrow” Luz could swear she could swear amity could hear her heart thumping. “Just the two of us” Amity grinned as the tension broke. “Of course!” she said, hugging luz and kissing her on the lips. “I would love too”

The next morning Camila returned home. She had been covering the night shift at the vets, looking after the animals that were in overnight and taking the few emergency calls. She yawned. She only had to take one every other week, but it really messed up her rhythm.

But not so badly she couldn't tell that something was going on in the house as she dropped her keys in the bowl. There was an…energy. A certain…what did the kids say? Vibe? Her first hint was Willow, who was sat at the kitchen table with twelve pieces of clothing due for the wash laid out which she was studying like it was the SATs (camila wondered, for a moment, if these kids had to take like…the magic SATs…).

Walking through to the sitting room, she saw Vee, watching a cheesy romantic comedy, notepad in hand. If Willow had looked like she had the energy of studying for an exam, Vee seemed to be actually studying for one, her notes seemingly extensive. Next to the DVD player were four, five, no six DVD cases, all open. “Vee…errr…make sure to put them away”. Vee looked at Camila with a slightly panicked look before nodding “yes mom” and then turning back

Heading downstairs to the basement to check on the boys, she saw an old coffee table and 2 plastic patio chairs set out

“Now” gus said to Hunter “when you get there, pull out the chair for her and say “for you mon Cherie”

“For…uhhh…for you mon Cherie” said Hunter tugging out the chair before a yelp, indicating he had hit his own shin. “I’ll just…go check on my other daughter” said camila to herself, sneaking up the stairs, trying to not let the boys know she had seen this ritual

As she got to the room for her daughters and their friends, she saw the mirrored wardrobe covered in the sticky notes Vee liked to put around. Instead of the usual notes of affirmation, or love, it looked instead like Camila's worst nightmare from College when she had been studying for an exam. 10s, no, Dozens of ideas scribbled and stuck on. Luz in her Pajamas pacing back and forth with her sword from that con. “Noooooo…it's going to be something cool” she said, pulling off three notes and adding five more haphazardly. Then rearranging them.

She hadn't been blind to some of this, in particular not Vee after Marsha visited, but for all of them to be this…lovesick? Camila sighed, and realized that the only person missing from the hormone infested house was Amity. Well, that was a little respite. Crush driven teenagers was difficult, but 5 of them…she was glad for the little extra space it afforded.

-

The old abandoned house had been converted successfully into a sort of HQ for the hex squad. Amity was determined to surprise Luz. on one side was a scavenged Vouge showing a beautiful dress. On the other were sewing manuals Hunter had been learning from, fabric, needle and thread. She was determined to be the most beautiful girlfriend she could for Luz tomorrow night.

Taking a deep breath, she took the needle, and threaded it through the fabric.

Outside the house, a little yelp of pain could be heard every 4 minutes or so.
