25 Advent Writing Challenge: One Chicago Drabbles

Summary:

The other One Chicago Drabbles I write for my 25 advent writing challenge.

Notes:

Hi everyone! So right now on Tumblr, I'm doing an advent writing challenge where I write a drabble a day, and while a good portion of them are Rheese or Jay Halstead related. Some of them aren't so I thought I'd post this to help keep everything organized I guess?

Some of these will fit into my other universes and if they do, I'll preface each chapter with the prompt and where it'll fit. I'll also be updating the tags as I go and the rating might change. As always thanks so much for reading and I hope you enjoy it!

Chapter 1: Day 3

Summary:

Set after the events of S10 E8: Under Your Skin. Ruzek talks to Kim again about her struggle. Slight allusions to PTSD.

Chapter Text

“I know, Adam. You said that before and I’ve told you, you don’t need to look after me. I’m fine.” Kim’s tone was as sharp as it had been before when they had another version of this same conversation. And just like before, she tried to brush him off. But unlike last time, Adam wasn’t going to be deterred.

He shook his head, folding his arms. “See, I don’t believe you are.”

He knew that sentence alone would have his ex-girlfriend’s hackles rising and he was not wrong. Kim’s back straightened. Her hands clenched into tight fists, that she hid inside her jacket when she saw him glance down.

She exhaled audibly, “Why?”

“Because after our last talk, you said you were finishing up some paperwork and would come home after. Instead, you and Hailey drive up to Wisconsin to an abandoned cabin.”

“It helped our case against Sean,” Kim countered.

“Yes, it helped our case against him. But it doesn’t help you or me. Mak or our team for that matter if you don’t stop and assess your state of mind and what you need till it’s too late.”

“I’m fine,” she shook her head, almost violently, “If I can just keep moving-”

“Long enough to bury it? Come on, Kim. We both know that inevitably backfires on everyone.” Adam told her. His voice was now gentle as he stepped closer to his ex-girlfriend.

The woman he was in love with and still after being apart for over two years now, still had a hold on him. Not that he was fighting it. He was in love with Kim Burgess and had been for the last nine years.

“You’re shaking,” he pointed out in a soft voice as he smoothed his hands down her yellow coat. The one she refused to get rid of for some reason unknown to him. “Darlin’ let me in. Let me help.”

Kim sighed with a deep frown pulling at her lips, but she finally nodded. Then she looked at him. “Adam, I-I’m not okay.”

Adam nodded. He knew how hard that was for her to admit. He was careful not to tell her it was going to be okay. “I know. We’ll work on it. Together. Alright? Mak has a therapy appointment on Tuesday right? We’ll talk to Dr. Taylor and see if she can recommend someone and go from there. Alright?”

Kim nodded, squeezing Adam’s hand. He squeezed hers back.
