Work Text:
“Be more careful next time”, Bentley sighed as you had almost let a virus into your hacking software. Any of you hadn’t slept well for quite a few nights, trying to find Sly through places where a time tunnel could have created extra breaches - and all of you were also grumpy. Even Murray had been grumpy, he had forgotten to eat or sleep properly as Bentley had asked you all to come listen what he and you had found - and now you worked almost non-stop, trying to find the time breaches and rolling dice to guess what you’ll get from the place you broke into. Even if it was a high-valued museum, a police station, a superstar’s mansion - if there was the tiniest chance of a breach, you were there immediately. No matter what the place was, there was a chance of getting Sly back home. But that also meant that either you or Bentley, or preferably both, had to watch the monitors at all times to look out for breaches in time. You slept for a couple of hours, and went back to work. And this night had been particularly rough and Bentley’s scolding got you to groan and glare at your working partner.
“Always nagging, aren’t you? Every time I hear your voice, it’s in a language called nag.” you snapped and Bentley’s confused eyes met yours. “Argh. You know what? I’m done, you’ve nagged to me for weeks and I feel like you don’t appreciate my work in this. I care about Sly and I’ll look for him, but not with you always nagging into my ear.”
You closed your laptop and marched out from the van, but then you heard Bentley’s wheelchair humming behind you.
“Wait,” he mumbled and you turned around quickly.
“What? You haven’t done the nagging?” you scoffed but Bentley just shook his head, looking up at you sadly.
“I’m sorry. I know this has been hard for you - it has been hard for all of us. We’ve only encountered false hopes and dead ends and the hope of finding Sly has been running off.” he wiped a tear from his cheek. “Please stay. I promise I’ll try to be kinder towards you. You’ve been working hard and I’ve been a jerk. I realized it as I looked at you when you got angry.”
You stared at Bentley for a while as your anger stabilized, before you sighed and took hold of Bentley’s hand. “I understand. This has been hard for us and we always don’t realize we’re being too demanding towards each other. But we have the same goal, to find Sly - and whenever he is, I know we’ll eventually find him.”
Bentley offered you a sad smile, before he squeezed your hand back. “I know that too. Our team won’t let him down.”
