Summary:

This was a prompt I was given in creative writing, not one I chose.
Robert has been friends with Rachel his entire life and never saw her as more, on his wedding day to a different woman she confesses to being in love with him. His response isn't exactly what she has in mind.

Notes:

I wrote this in creative writing and I'm not exactly certain what I wrote, so enjoy!

Work Text:

Robert pulls out his cards to start the game knowing that this chase had carried on for long enough, if they truly loved one another it would have happened. Taking in a deep breath he stumbles through the first question knowing he needs to come up with something in order to get her to leave without breaking her heart.
Waiting for her response with bated breath terrified she will get it right, but She doesn’t. His shoulders drop as he exhales. She shoots with a question they both are aware he knows. Looking around for any way to avoid the inevitable, realizing there is no way out he hesitantly answers incorrectly hoping she won’t see through the facade.
Her smile starts to drop as the realization hits her. She lets out a sigh gazing solemnly at the ground. His futile there was no way but truth left. He opens his mouth to speak as tears begin to slide down her face she gasps in a breath hoping to seem stoic in her response. “Why are you doing this?”
Wanting to be seen as more than just a friend she had always assumed he too wanted what she did not once think of what he truly desired. As he hears the words leave her mouth he can’t help but hold back a cry, she had been his best friend, his everything for as long as either one could remember but did that mean that they truly belonged with each other? Her feelings every so slightly calm down wanting to finish her thoughts before he’s able to answer.
"I get it, you just wanted someone to be there for you that you could send away when things evolved with someone else." He looked up at her with astoundment written on his face he couldn’t believe she could come to such a conclusion.
"How dare you!" He screamed, "I have spent my entire life trying to be everything I could for you, comforting you through every heartbreak, and every lost friend. You have absolutely no right to storm into my wedding to try and get me to fall in love with someone who only thinks about herself, news flash the world doesn’t revolve around you!"
Panting from exhaustion and anger Robert stands up turning to go.
Rachel leans over to grab his sleeve intent on making him stay, it was real, their loves was real and he had to see that she couldn’t have been making it up the entire time she knew that all those long nights at the park and vacations to the beach couldn’t mean anything.
She starts to plead "Please I swear I didn’t come here to mess anything up, please let me stay?"
Robert turns his head to look into her eyes. "You can leave. If you truly cared and came to this wedding as you’re saying you did you would never have tried to convince me to leave my wonderful bride to run off with a childhood friend whose idea of communication is showing up at my wedding uninvited to profess your love. That's not what a friend is."
