Breaking Traditions

Standing outside of Gringotts, Sirius Black watched as his cousins, Bellatrix and Andromeda, disappeared into the crowds of Diagon Alley. They had more interest in seeing their friends than helping Sirius and their sister gather their supplies. At least, Sirius knew his way around Diagon Alley – and the surrounding allies.

He turned, catching the gray eyes of his younger cousin, Narcissa. Her face was expressionless and her blonde hair was pulled back in a tight braid.

“We’re starting at Wights,” she stated. “It will make carrying everything easier.”

Sirius nodded. He moved to walk off, only to make it two steps.

“Cousin,” Narcissa said, her tone sharp.

Sighing, Sirius returned to his younger cousin’s side. He offered his arm, which Narcissa quickly accepted.

Acting like the gentleman he was raised to be, Sirius dutiful escorted his cousin to Wights’, which was a little further down the alley. As they walked, Sirius glanced around, taking in the sight of crowds. There was something about Diagon Alley.

Wight had a brick exterior with black windows and a black door. The two windows displayed some of the different trunk designs and bags.

Still acting like a gentleman, Sirius opened the door for Narcissa.

“Welcome,” greeted Selena Wight as she stepped into the showroom. Her dark hair was pulled back with a few pieces framing her face. She raised a dark eyebrow at the sight of her customers.

Her dark eyes swept over the pair. “Blacks, if I’m not mistaken,” she declared.

Narcissa offered her a polite smile. “I’m interested in a three-compartment trunk,” she explained.

Selena nodded, pulling out her wand. “Color?” she asked, motioning to a nearby display that showcased the numerous color options.

“Black,” Narcissa answered without looking at the options.

Selena chuckled. “With silver trim and detailing?” That was the Black family tradition.

“No,” Narcissa said with a shake of her head. “I want gold, and I want it customized with my initials, NDB.”

That drew matching frowns from Selena and Sirius.

Selena nodded, turning her attention to Sirius.

“Same,” he answered, “with SOB.” He planned to get gold as a sign of rebellion – some kind of indicator for his mother to reflect on before he started breaking Black family traditions.

Selena’s eyebrows rose as she nodded. “I’ll have those ready in an hour,” she said.

Sirius nodded as his eyes fell on the display of bags. He quickly selected a gray bag that had some Expansion Charms and Weightless Charms.

Narcissa’s expression brightened as she looked through the bags as well. She selected a dark red bag for herself.

Sirius and Narcissa walked up to the counter, where Selena met them. She glanced at the bags they had. “That will be sixty-four galleons,” she announced.

Reaching into his inner robe pocket, Sirius retrieved his money pouch. He started counting the galleons as he placed them on the counter. Luckily, the Blacks were a rich family.
