Summary
Ilya stands slightly behind Marly as he rings the doorbell to a large Victorian house. He is not hiding. He just doesn’t want to crowd the door. A short older woman with thick gray hair, Marly’s grandmother, Ilya assumes, answers at the sound of the bell, immediately pulling Marly into a tight hug he has to nearly fold himself in half to reciprocate. Her eyes are closed as she hugs her grandson, and when she opens them, she looks at Ilya with surprise, then back at Marly with censure.
“You didn’t tell me you were bringing a friend,” she scolds Marly in French.
Ilya looks at Marly in surprise, discomfort blooming in his chest.
“You did not tell them I was coming?” he asks.
Marly’s grandmother’s face lights up, and she hits Marly’s arm more forcefully, pushing him aside and taking the bakery box out of Ilya’s arms to shove it into Marly’s.
“You are Cliff’s friend?” she asks in French, pulling Ilya into a hug of his own. “You speak French?”Or, Five times Shane and Ilya surprise people with their language skills and one time they surprise each other.
As with every work in this series, this fic can be read as a standalone.
