The car ride home is quiet. JJ has the windows down and the soft summer air sits heavily between them. Emily feels grimy from leftover sweat and kicked-up dirt. She’s tired. Jennifer drives blindly, she’s driven back from the airport enough times that it’s practically muscle memory. Emily is painfully quiet, staring vacuously out the window at the passing street signs, the glimmers of neon lights dance across her unfocused vision. She's come to expect this from Emily.
