Work Text:
With the morning sun normally came joy, or at least neutrality. A feeling of excitement for a new day with new opportunities. Unfortunately for Todoroki that was not the case. It was Sunday, a day off school, a day for hanging out with his friends. With exams over and school ending the workload was nonexistent, which means he should be able to enjoy today. Sleep in, eat breakfast, laze around all day, talk with friends and acquaintances. Unfortunately for Todoroki, his father was requesting they go out to lunch together, as father and son. He wanted to ‘catch up’ with Todoroki, and for the most part now that was true. Ever since his father decided he wanted to be better he had mostly dropped the becoming number one and surpassing All Might thing, it still lingered slightly in conversations, but for the most part, he didn’t mention it. Of course, he still wanted his son to become a good hero, but surpassing people wasn’t his main concern. Todoroki was fairly certain it was partially because All Might was now retired and you can’t surpass someone who doesn’t do anything. By technicality, all the students surpassed All Might the moment he laid down the cape, but to Todoroki that was beside the point. What mattered to him was that his father stopped using him and his siblings as chess pieces. Nothing will ever deny that his house was built on a paper frame and looked sturdy from the outside but inside you could tell it was fake an illusion, but his love for his siblings and his mother was real. His love for his father was also there, while many would say they could never love someone that treated them how his father treated him Todoroki wasn’t that way. He knew his father cared for the whole family, even though he was manipulative in his love and praise, so that’s how Todoroki ended up accepting his father's invitation to lunch, upon the promise from his father that he will not attempt to make this lunch anything more than it is. No telling Todoroki how to better his schooling or future career, and no bringing up All Might.
The sun continued to peek through Todoroki’s window as he lay on his back in his futon. His eyes were still adjusting to the morning light and he felt so heavy that if he didn’t get up now he knew he was going to fall back asleep. Sitting up on the futon he reached over to his phone on the floor next to his pillow. Unplugging it from the charger he brought it up to his face in an attempt to check the time only to be greeted by several messages from his father.
Father:
Shouto, you didn’t forget about our lunch this afternoon, did you?
Father:
Shouto, noon, sharp, I expect to see you by the U.A. gates.
Father:
Shouto, don’t ignore me.
Father:
Shouto, I need confirmation you will be here.
Todoroki gave an exasperated sigh, all the messages were sent within a ten-minute time frame, heck Todoroki wasn’t even close to late. It was only half past ten when his father started texting and they were both leaving U.A. together at noon, but with Todoroki’s past of ignoring and blowing off his father, he couldn’t quite blame him. Todoroki shot back a quick confirmation text and got up to get ready. He didn’t feel like going to lunch today, training and exams had been hard and he just wanted to sit on the couch with his friends all day.
Todoroki gathered his clothes and sauntered downstairs to the communal showers. When the elevator opened Todoroki began to walk to the showers when he was greeted by a gruff voice in the kitchen.
“Finally awake sleeping beauty?” Bakugou asked ruffly. It surprised Todoroki a bit, he wasn’t expecting anyone in the kitchen at this time. By now most people had finished breakfast and were out or doing their own thing. He flipped around and met Bakugou’s eyes. He looked a little exasperated by Todoroki like he couldn’t believe that Todoroki slept in so late on his own time. Todoroki didn’t respond, he wasn’t sure how to respond to that. It seemed like a rhetorical statement, so instead of a response he just turned back around and walked into the shower. He could hear Bakugou’s scoff behind him, as he went back to whatever he was doing in the kitchen.
Todoroki hung his things up on the hook by the shower and got in. His showers were always cold. Partly because his fire side kept him warm enough for a cold shower and partly because he was never allowed a hot shower when he was a kid. His father's reasoning was pretty smart. If you took a cold shower you would be more inclined to get out faster because instead of relaxing the shower was uncomfortable, so as a kid his showers got as short as one minute because he hated the cold feeling. That was until he stopped showering entirely because of the cold, but his dad instead of letting him take a warm shower would just stand in the bathroom to make sure Todoroki showered. The showers remained short until Todoroki got older and more accustomed to the feeling of the cold, then they got longer. Not significantly longer because Todoroki never really saw the reason for long showers, but they got longer than one minute. With all the kids taking short showers the water bill stayed low. This confused Todoroki a little because his father could easily pay the bill, so he figured this was another training exercise. Get accustomed to low temperatures to train his body and his quirk. It took Todoroki a while to figure out hot water was a thing for showers and not just tea or dishes. He didn’t know until he came to U.A. and how you took your showers came up in conversation. Normally Todoroki just listened to these conversations because they were often either trivial, or about things he had never experienced, but he had experienced a shower so he mentioned how he took short showers because they were cold, and he didn’t get why people would take long showers just to stand in the cold longer. This sparked a whole bunch of chaos that ended with Todoroki taking a hot shower for the first time, with almost all the boys as his witness. The shower was nice and he stayed in there longer than he would like to admit, but after that, he quickly went back to his cold showers. He claimed it was because he liked routine, he didn’t want to admit that the hot shower got a little too steamy and he ended up passing out once he got back to his room.
When Todoroki got out of his cold shower he got dressed. The clothes he picked out were significantly nicer than his normal clothes, mainly because his father said clothes make a man, and Todoroki didn’t feel like arguing. Clothes were something he was willing to sacrifice for his father. He pulled on some nicer slacks and a button-up shirt. After brushing his teeth and putting on deodorant he exited the bathroom with his dirty clothes under arm.
“Wow, who died?” Bakugou asked with a smirk when he saw Todoroki’s outfit.
“No one has died Bakugou, my father invited me for lunch that is all,” Todoroki responded, buttoning the top button of his shirt and sliding into a stool across the island counter. Bakugou appeared to be in the process of meal prep. He did it every Sunday so that he would be set for the whole week. Almost everyone left when he did this because any sort of noise or interruption would bother him so much that he would chase the source of the noise, normally Kaminari, out of the kitchen with a knife, so people just stayed away instead of risking their lives for a snack. Todoroki never talked much so he didn’t bother Bakugou, so he was allowed to stay in the kitchen as long as he ‘speak when spoken to'. He looked up at Bakugou’s face and noticed the small grimace on his features.
“Shesh isn’t this like the third time this month he asked you to do something with him? What a loser.” Bakugou asked, a grimace spreading upon his face at the mention of Todoroki’s father. No one liked his father, to begin with after meeting Todoroki, but after they all moved into the dorms they realized how much Todoroki missed out on because of him. Eventually, the hate became unanimous between his classmates and no one ever brought him up unless Todoroki did first, and the reactions to his father’s name were never endearing.
“It’s the fifth time, but it’s the first time I said yes,” Todoroki responded, watching Bakugou chop the celery on his cutting board and add it to a bag of already chopped veggies. Bakugou snorted.
“He’s working his ass off to prove he’s not a fuck up father,” Bakugou said, grabbing some cucumbers from the shopping bag on the table and washing them in the sink. Todoroki wasn’t sure how to respond to that, sure his father annoyed him and pestered him, but he was trying. Todoroki wasn’t quite sure he was ready to forgive him though.
“I suppose so,” Todoroki responded, before looking up at Bakugou again. Bakugou, who had started chopping the cucumbers, looked up to see Todoroki looking at him.
“If you're going to stare at me, Halfe, I’m going to chase you out of the kitchen with a knife too.” He said holding the knife up towards Todoroki, the sides covered in small slivers of cucumber.
“Okay,” Todoroki said in response, “I need to finish getting ready for my father anyways.” He picked up his dirty clothes from the chair next to him and got in the elevator. Back in his room he put his dirty clothes away and pulled his phone out to check the time. The clock on his phone shone ten forty-eight. He had only blown eighteen minutes showering and talking to Bakugou. He sighed and sat down at his desk, his leg bouncing up and down as he waited. Flipping his phone over occasionally to check the time he sat at his desk, waiting for noon.
He sat at his desk nervously and the time passed at a snail's pace. Eventually, the clock shone eleven fifty and Todoroki made his way downstairs. When he got down he saw Bakugou and Midoriya on the couch. They were the only ones, besides Todoroki, who had stayed at the dorms for the weekend. They were both watching an All Might movie. Bakugou wore a scowl on his face and a bowl of popcorn sat in between his thighs. Midoriya sat on the opposite side of the couch, watching intently. Midoriya was the first to notice Todoroki.
“Hi Todoroki, where are you going?” He asked, noticing Todoroki’s coat zipped up, and a scarf wrapped tightly around his neck.
“My father invited me for lunch,” Todoroki responded.
“Oh, isn’t this like the thir-“ Midoriya started asking before he was interrupted by Bakugou.
“It’s the fifth! Now shut up and stop interrupting the damn movie!” Bakugou yelled, eyes still trained on the movie.
“Sorry, Kacchan!” Midoriya said to Bakugou and then he turned back to Todoroki. “Have a good lunch with your dad.” He whispered with a smile.
“Thanks,” Todoroki said as he pulled his boots on.
“Give him hell!” Bakugou cheered from the couch, popcorn falling from his open mouth. Todoroki wasn’t sure if he was talking to the movie or him but he nodded and walked out the door.
He walked down the U.A. path slowly, careful of the ice that had formed from the packed down snow. It crunched under his feet and got stuck to the bottom of his boots causing his steps to become uneven.
Eventually, he reached the gates of the school and saw his father leaning against the car in his black jacket.
“Shouto!” He greeted him with a booming voice. It rattled through the cold air. Todoroki didn’t respond, he just walked out of the gate and over to his father.
“How are you?” He asked Todoroki, trying to appear friendly.
“Good,” Todoroki responded. His father smiled slightly, pleased to have received a response. He opened the door of the car and ushered Todoroki inside, climbing in after him.
His father told the driver where they were going and then sat back in his seat in silence as they drove off. They drove for fifteen minutes before the silence was broken by his father’s voice.
“How’s school?” He asked. Todoroki mentally rolled his eyes. He knows his father is just curious, but the questions were repetitive and annoying. Every conversation, how are you? How’s school? How are your friends? It was frustrating.
“Good,” Todoroki responded simply. He found that it didn’t matter how long his answers were as long as he said something, his father didn’t care. It was more for himself than Todoroki anyways. It was so he felt involved in his son's life.
“Your friends?” He asked.
“They're good,” Todoroki said. He opened his mouth to ask Todoroki another question when the car slowed and then stopped.
“We’re here Sir.” The driver said, looking back at the both of them. Todoroki opened his car door, and stepped out into the cold air, followed by his father.
“Right here Shouto.” His father said ushering Todoroki into the restaurant in front of him. They walked in and were hit by a gust of warm air. It blew Todoroki’s hair back from his forehead and his scarf fell down his face slightly.
His father went to talk to the hostess
“Reservation for Todoroki, Enji.” He said.
“Twelve twenty?” The hostess asked. Enji nodded in confirmation.
“Right this way please.” She said as she pulled some menus from beside the check-in desk. They walked to the back of the restaurant, and Todoroki couldn’t help but feel a little relieved. Todoroki has always struggled with being around people, big groups of people especially. His friends said it was called social anxiety, but Todoroki wasn’t quite sure. Other classmates of his also had social anxiety, and it seemed much more severe than what he had experienced. He watched Kirishima hyperventilate in a bathroom because he had to be interviewed about U.A. and a villain attack he helped stop. Todoroki had never hyperventilated about being around people. He guessed his reluctance to be around people was simply because their social interactions were confusing. Due partially to his childhood and partially to his personality. He never understood references or jokes. Whenever Kaminari would tell him one of his jokes Todoroki would just look at him with a blank stare.
“Here we are.” The hostess said and placed the menus on the table before disappearing. Todoroki pulled off his coat and scarf, draping them over the back of the chair before sliding into his seat. Enji followed suit and sat down across from him. A new woman came back with two glasses and a pitcher of water. She placed the glasses down and filled them both up before she introduced herself.
“Hello I’m Ito and I will be your server today. Anything I can get started for you?” She asked kindly.
“No thank you.” Enji dismissed looking at his menu.
“Okay, I’ll be back. Just let me know if you need anything.” She said before disappearing.
Enji looked up from his menu and at Todoroki before placing the menu down and attempting to start small talk again.
“Any new friends?” He asked.
“No,” Todoroki responded, he wasn’t sure how to make new friends when he lived with the same nineteen people.
“Anyone catch your eye?” His father asked with a smirk.
“Catch my eye?” Todoroki asked, completely lost as to why someone would be catching his eye.
“Anyone, you like?” His father clarified.
“I like Midoriya and recently due to the support course Bakugou has become a good friend too,” Todoroki responded.
“No Shouto, I’m talking about a girl.” His father attempted to clarify again. Just the server came by to take their order.
“Are you guys ready to order?” She asked. Enji looked away from Todoroki and up at the server to order.
“Yeah, I’ll take the Udon,” Enji ordered. The server looked to Todoroki.
“Cold soba.” He said, closing his menu and handing it to the server.
“Is that all?” The server asked, accepting the menu back from Enji.
“Yes, that will be all,” Enji answered. Todoroki took a sip of his water and looked up at his father as he attempted to pick up the conversation where they left off.
“Where were we,” Enji started attempting to get the conversation to flow again. “Ah yes, Shouto like I was attempting to ask, are there any girls you like?” He asked. Todoroki thought for a moment and then answered.
“Yaoyorozu is a good friend. She was very helpful in the exams.” His father looked at him with a look of slight exasperation before giving up entirely on the conversation. They sat in silence before Todoroki’s phone dinged in his coat pocket. He knew it was rude to answer the phone at the table, but his father had been rude to him his whole life so he figured answering the phone was a little payback. He pulled his phone from the coat pocket and opened it to a text from Bakugou.
Bakugou:
How's lunch with the flaming dumpster?
Todoroki couldn’t help but smile inside a little at the nickname. He had never really liked Bakugou’s nicknames on account of them making fun of people’s appearance most of the time, and Todoroki was never one to judge on looks. Especially because of his scar covering half of his face, but the nickname Bakugou had deemed perfect for Endeavor, always made Todoroki a little happier.
Todoroki:
It’s going okay. He asked me about my friends that are girls, and if anyone caught my eye. I’m not sure how those things correlate.
Bakugou typed for a while before responding to Todoroki
Bakugou:
HAJDNEJBEEEJENSHEE YOU IDIOT! He’s asking if you have a crush on anyone!
Todoroki looked at his phone in confusion. Ignoring the disjointed letters and grammar errors he typed out another confused response.
Todoroki:
Crush?
Bakugou:
Someone you like, like someone you might marry, is what the dumpster is probably thinking. You fucking idiot.
Marry? Why would he marry someone in high school? He was about to ask Bakugou to clarify when his father spoke.
“Shouto it’s rude to be on your phone when you’re eating with someone.” He said sternly. Todoroki opened his mouth to respond when the server appeared from behind some tables with their food.
“Who had the cold soba?” She asked. Todoroki slightly raised his hand and accepted the dish. The server then placed his father's meal in front of him.
“Let me know if you need anything else.” She said kindly and then left the table.
Todoroki and Enji ate and paid for their meal in silence. Enji had given up on making conversation with Todoroki, and Todoroki didn’t like talking to his father anyways. They walked out of the restaurant and were hit with a burst of cold wind. Todoroki pulled his scarf tight around his face, covering his nose and mouth.
The driver had left, not being allowed to park in front of the restaurant longer than five minutes.
“The car is this way Shouto.” His father said, gesturing down the sidewalk. They walked down the road, both of them having their hands shoved deep in their pockets.
“This way.” Enji gestured around the corner, and as they turned they heard a commotion. A woman was shrieking at a man in all-black clothes as they tugged on either side of an expensive-looking purse. The man shoved her and began to run away holding the purse.
“Help, he's robbing me!” The woman shouted, looking around for help. His father stiffened beside him before rushing after the thief. Todoroki watched as his father's hair burst into flame and a wall of fire erupted around the thief. As quickly as the commotion started it stopped. His father appeared from the smoke holding the thief’s hands behind his back. He gave the purse back to the lady, who was now floored that the one and only Endeavor saved her. Enji stood in the road as people rushed over to him, some praised him, some asked him for an autograph, and others just cheered. It was a unique experience to see the number one hero in person and if it was All Might, Todoroki was sure he wouldn’t miss the chance to see him up close too.
Just then a gust of air hit Todoroki from behind and when he turned he saw Hawks landing behind him.
Todoroki felt a little more comfortable that it was Hawks and not some paparazzi. Ever since Hawks and his father had started working together Hawks had been making more and more appearances. At first, Todoroki wasn’t a big fan of Hawks, especially his unannounced appearances. He thought Hawks was arrogant and a little self-absorbed. Eventually, Todoroki got used to Hawk’s presence and he even came to enjoy it. Hawks did the talking for the both of them and Todoroki liked to listen. He and Todoroki interacted more and more as Hawks and Enji worked together. He gave Todoroki a stupid nickname and ruffled his hair. Todoroki thought his actions reminded him of an older brother, and Todoroki didn’t mind.
“Hey, little Roki’! Your dad is saving people on his day off huh?” Hawks asked with a smirk. Todoroki nodded.
“Why are you here?” Todoroki asked. Hawks smiled.
“I’m on patrol, happened to be flying by, and saw a commotion, but it seems Endeavor has it covered huh?” Hawks asked. Todoroki nodded.
“I feel yah, not wanting to step in, get attacked by all that attention. Sometimes I wish I was more underground, but I do love the attention.” Hawks said, nudging Todoroki’s arm. Todoroki just nodded again, agreeing with Hawks like everything he just said was right. Sure part of the reason he didn’t step in was he didn’t like the attention, and he knew his father would step in regardless of what Todoroki did, but another part of him didn’t step in because his lunch was sitting in his stomach a little heavier than normal, and he figured that strenuous activity wasn’t the best idea.
“Looks like we’re going to be here a while huh.” Hawks said watching a news truck pull up beside Enji and a camera crew jump out. Again Todoroki nodded. He was starting to feel nauseous and he didn’t want to open his mouth just in case. Blowing chunks on the sidewalk in front of a news crew and his father sounds like a bad idea. Hawks turned to him with a look of slight concern.
“You doing okay?” He asked. Todoroki nodded again and then proceeded to squeeze his eyes shut. The nausea was getting worse and shaking his head made it increase even more. He felt his stomach start to churn and felt utterly lost. He felt fine this morning. Heck, he only started feeling bad right after lunch. He ate cold soba, he always eats cold soba, so why does he feel sick? A lump formed in his throat and he tried to swallow it down only succeeding in lodging it further in.
“Are you sure you're okay? You look a little pale.” Hawks said, worry etching even further into his features. Todoroki could only hum in response. Saliva was beginning to fill his mouth and the lump moved up his throat. He felt sweat dampen his brow even though it was cold outside, and drip down his face. His stomach churned roughly and he swallowed again. Hawks had seemed convinced as he continued to talk to Todoroki about who knows what. It sounded like he was geeking out over Enji, and if Todoroki didn’t feel so terrible he would have told Hawks that he needed to meet Midoriya and they could have quite a long conversation.
Todoroki’s stomach flipped and he let out a low whine, when he remembered where he was he quickly cut it off, casting a side glance at Hawks. Hawks had stopped talking about Enji and had instead turned to face Todoroki.
“Roki’, if you're not feeling well you can tell me you know?” He said worriedly. “I don’t judge! One time on live television I got a little dizzy from all the fighting and flying, and I puked right on a reporter.” Hawks laughed to himself before continuing. “It was a meme for weeks! I was so embarrassed!” He said smiling. Todoroki tried to make his face into a smile as well, but he was pretty sure it looked like a grimace. The talk about puke just made him more nauseous. He could feel his stomach moving under his hand in his pocket, and was surprised it wasn’t audible.
“You can tell me if you're not feeling well, we don’t want you puking in front of the reporters. Then you’ll be a meme.” Hawks said, clapping him on the back lightly. That was what did it. Todoroki felt his stomach lurch and he quickly rushed backward down a nearby alley. He quickly ducked behind a dumpster and squatted down. One hand pushed against the brick wall to keep him upright while the other held his stomach. He gave a sickly belch as saliva dripped out of his mouth.
“Todoroki? Todoroki?” He heard Hawks calling down the alleyway. The only response he could give was a whine.
“Todoroki?” Hawks said as he looked behind the dumpster.
“Oh hey Roki’, not feeling well huh? Sorry about that back there didn’t mean to make it worse.” Hawks said. He bent down and leaned over, putting his hand on Todoroki’s back. Todoroki gave another sickly belch as nausea swirled his senses.
“You're gonna be sick huh.” Hawks said. It wasn’t really a question. He could see the state Todoroki was in, he knew, but Todoroki still nodded. He gently worked Todoroki’s coat off his form. There was a long streak of sweat down Todoroki’s back and on the front too. Hawks carefully undid some of the buttons on Todoroki’s shirt, helping to increase airflow to Todoroki’s clammy skin. A retch tore its way up Todoroki’s throat, and his stomach gurgled, audibly this time.
“Wow, your stomach sounds really upset, no wonder you're sick.” Hawks said, voice dripping with concern. He reached over to Todoroki’s front attempting to hold him steady when he felt how the kid's pants were pushing into his bloated stomach.
“Is it okay if I undo your pants button? Might help your stomach feel a little better.” Hawks asked. Todoroki nodded, and Hawks gently undid the pants button.
“Better?” Hawks asked, and Todoroki nodded. His hand returned to Todoroki’s back rubbing it in a comforting manner. Todoroki’s whole stomach lurched and he gave another sickly retch, saliva dripped into a puddle on the concrete, some sticking in his hair.
“You shouldn’t have come if you felt so bad.” Hawks said pulling Todoroki’s scarf off his neck so it would be out of the line of fire.
“Lunch,” Todoroki whimpered, too tired to make a full-sentence response.
“You felt bad after lunch?” Hawks asked. Todoroki nodded, surprised that Hawks could understand his one word.
“It’s probably food poisoning.” Hawks said, “ You probably-“
“Gonna be sick,” Todoroki mumbled, interrupting Hawks with another belch.
“I know.” Hawks said, unfazed by the interruption. pulling Todoroki’s damp hair off his forehead. “It’s okay.”
Todoroki lurched forward with a guttural retch that echoed around the alleyway. Hot vomit climbed up his throat and shot out his mouth splattering on the brick wall in front of him.
“Shit.” Hawks said. He gently pulled Todoroki back attempting to minimize the splash back. Another gag came up Todoroki’s throat and he brought up a bigger stream of chunky vomit. The smell of undigested soba filled the alley, making Todoroki more nauseous. He squeezed his eyes shut, not wanting to see the puke on the ground. He put his hand over his mouth not wanting to puke anymore. Hawks noticed and pulled Todoroki’s hand away as he lurched again.
“It’s okay, you're okay.” Hawks comforted gently rubbing Todoroki’s back, he felt Todoroki’s back stiffen and knew what was coming. Checking that nothing was in front of Todoroki’s mouth he soothed him through another round of vomiting. Todoroki’s cheeks puffed out as he puked again.
“Get it out Roki’.” Hawks soothed and Todoroki opened his mouth allowing the vomit to hit the floor as he gagged. The vomit splattered into the already existing puddle and splashed onto his shirt and shoes. His stomach churned and rolled, growling audibly and flexing under Hawk’s hand and he kept Todoroki from plummeting forward. Sweat dripped down Todoroki’s neck and back. Hawks felt his stomach muscles spasm and Todoroki lurched with a harsh retch bringing up a significantly smaller stream of vomit that came out his nose and mouth. He groaned and spat on the ground trying to get the taste from his mouth. He belched and put his hand over his mouth.
“Sorry.” He mumbled.
“You're okay.” Hawks said. “You think you're done?” He asked. Todoroki spat on the ground and leaned back against Hawks' chest. He mumbled a yes in response. Tears filled his eyes, he felt so embarrassed he just puked in front of the number two hero. Hawks noticed the tears just as Todoroki began to sniffle.
“It’s okay Roki’” Hawks said, brushing Todoroki’s hair behind his ears, he used his flight jacket to blot the sweat away from Todoroki’s face.
“Everyone gets sick. Even me.”
They sat there for a while until Todoroki stopped feeling so shaky.
“Okay Roki’ you think you can get up? Your dad’s probably looking for you.” Just then a voice boomed through the alleyway.
“Shouto? Where are you? Shouto?” Enji stopped upon the scene in the alley. Todoroki was being helped up by Hawks, who had both of his hands tight on the boy’s arms. Todoroki’s face was covered in a sheen of sweat and vomit. He was shaking slightly. There was a puddle of orange-tinted vomit on the ground and some splattered on the brick wall.
“What happened?” Enji asked.
“He got sick, I think it was food poisoning.” Hawks said, looking at Todoroki with concern.
“You okay kid?” He asked, still holding tight to both of Todoroki's arms.
“Food poisoning? From the restaurant?” Enji asked, walking over to Todoroki, and grabbing one of his arms. Todoroki leaned slightly into his father’s grasp buttoning his pants again, grimacing as they bit into his bloated belly.
“Yeah.” Hawks said handing Todoroki off to Enji and passing Todoroki’s coat to him as well. “You should probably get him home soon, I’m sure it’s not out of his system yet.” Hawks recommended. He backed up slightly from the two, getting them out of the direct path of his wings.
“Welp, I gotta go, finish patrol ya know. Bye Endeavor! Bye Roki’! Feel better!” Hawks called as he took off from the alleyway and into the sky. Enji turned to Todoroki.
“Ready to go home?” He asked. Todoroki looked up at him.
“U.A.?” He asked, he didn’t want to go home. It was never a pleasant place, especially when someone was sick. They never got good treatment, they were just ignored until they were better, and Todoroki wasn’t in a being ignored mood.
“You want to go back to school?” Enji asked, dragging Todoroki to the car parked in front of the alley.
“Yeah,” Todoroki responded simply.
“I guess that old lady could heal you, then you wouldn’t have to miss any training,” Enji said, more to himself than Todoroki. “Okay, you can go back to U.A.” Enji agreed, opening the car door and helping Todoroki inside before following him into the back of the car.
They began to drive. The drive back to the school was only about fifteen minutes but it felt a lot longer for Todoroki. About five minutes in he started feeling sick again. He figured Hawks was right and the food wasn’t out of his system yet. Sweat began to form at his brow again and his stomach started to turn. He looked out the window trying to keep from getting sick. The cold window felt good on his forehead but the trees whizzing by made him feel dizzy. He closed his eyes and groaned again.
“Shouto?” His father asked cautiously. Todoroki glanced over at his father.
“Are you feeling ill again?” He asked. Todoroki shook his head no.
“Tired.” He mumbled in response.
“Okay, let me know if you do, I don’t feel like cleaning vomit off my seats.” His father said training his eyes forward again. Todoroki smirked slightly. Classic fatherly move, caring more about his car than his kids. Sweat began dripping down Todoroki’s back, and saliva started filling his mouth. All of a sudden his stomach lurched. He was going to be sick again. He shot upright and turned towards his father.
“Shouto?” His father asked him quizzically. Todoroki opened his mouth, and a guttural retch tore from his throat and a stream of yellowish bile came from his mouth and splattered on his father's coat. It ran down the fabric darkening it as it went.
“Shit,” Enji said, then addressing the driver, “pull over!” He yelled. The driver pulled to the side of the road just as Todoroki threw up another mouthful of bile, this time it was in his father's hands and he held them out in an attempt to save his coat. The moment the car stopped Enji threw his door open and pulled Todoroki out onto the sidewalk, but by then Todoroki had finished vomiting and was trying to catch his breath. They both sat there on the sidewalk for about ten minutes waiting for Todoroki to be done. He gave an occasional dry heave but nothing else came up.
“Are you actually done this time?” Enji asked. Todoroki nodded, wiping his mouth on his coat sleeve. They both climbed back into the car and after they got situated Todoroki was handed a plastic bag by the driver of the car.
“Just in case.” He said before they took off back to the school. Todoroki held the bag on his lap tight, looking straight ahead at the road, watching all the twists and turns. Eventually, they got to the U.A. gates. Todoroki got out of the car and shut the door. He turned away but turned back when he heard the window roll down.
“Remember to visit the old lady Todoroki, I don’t want you missing any training,” Enji said before the car sped off. Todoroki sighed and trudged back to the dorms. The air was colder as evening came and it was already getting dark out. Eventually, the dorms came into view and Todoroki knocked the old snow and ice off his boots, they were still stained with vomit and Todoroki sighed knowing he would have to clean them eventually.
He walked inside and saw Midoriya and Bakugou still on the couch, both of them were on their phones. Midoriya looked up as Todoroki came in.
“How was lunch?” He asked with a smile. Before Todoroki could answer Bakugou broke in.
“What’s on your shirt?” He asked face wrinkled in disgust. “Couldn’t get your food in your mouth halfie? Did you need a bib?” He sneered.
“No, it's vomit,” Todoroki answered honestly. “I got food poisoning, according to Hawks.”
“Oh, Todoroki are you okay?” Midoriya asked in concern, walking towards Todoroki. He helped him unbutton his soiled shirt and pull it off.
“Oi, nerd, stop stripping halfie down in the living room!” Bakugou called from the couch.
“I’m washing his shirt Kacchan, it’s going to stain,” Midoriya said bringing the shirt to the washing room and dousing it in stain removal.
“Do you need anything else?” Midoriya asked after he returned from the washer.
“I’m fine Midoriya, just tired and sweaty. I’m going to take a shower and then a nap. Let me know when it’s time for dinner.” Todoroki responded, ignoring Bakugou.
“Will do Todoroki! Feel better.” Midoriya said.
“Oh Bakugou, you know how you told me to ‘give my father hell’?” Todoroki asks, turning towards Bakugou’s form on the couch.
“Yeah?” Bakugou said, not following.
“I’m not sure if this is considered hell, but I did puke on him, in the car,” Todoroki said and then left the living room headed towards the showers. As he walked away, he could hear Bakugou’s howling laughter.
