The cabin had been quiet as subtle music played in the background. Tim’s device was no longer paired with the speaker, which made everyone happy. If they heard Santa Tell Me one more time, they were probably going to drop his ass back in Gotham.
Dick and Kory were outside, trying their luck with building a snowman. Dick explained the basics to her and she was sure that she could top Gar and Conner’s.
“Why don’t we put a cute little jacket on her?” Kory asked with her head tilted, viewing their soon-to-be-finished product.
“Her? ” Dick turned to her.
Kory playfully rolled her eyes, hearing the confusion in his voice, “Yes, her . Is that a problem, Grayson?”
“Hmm… typically snowmen are, well, men. It’s in the name…”
A smile began to creep up on her face as she leaned into him, voice soft but so sweet , “But…”
Dick chuckled to himself, realizing what she was doing, “But, I suppose there isn’t any reason why he can’t be a she.” Kory’s smile grew wider, pressing her lips against his cheek in gratitude.
His pale face began to turn a light shade of pink where her lips were, heating that side of his cheek, or was he… blushing?
“Okay!” Kory started, turning back to the snowwoman as she rubbed her hands together in excitement, “Maybe we can do a red jacket– ooh! Or maybe a green one with red mittens!”
Dick narrowed his eyes while standing behind her. He associated the color red with a specific person. A little girl to be exact.
“Um…” He cleared his throat, wondering if she knew about the little girl, “What’s the obsession with the color red?”
She looked over her shoulder to him, “ Obsession? Didn’t you say that humans associate the color red with Christmas?”
OH!
Duh, Grayson.
“Right. Sorry, I think the cold is starting to get to me,” He played it off.
“You could… warm me up,” He added, hoping for her to play into his hand.
“Yeah, yeah. After we perfect our little girl,” She said while adjusting her nose.
What the–
Dick threw his head back, cursing the air. She looked back at him and he quickly looked forward before she could notice.
“Let’s go inside and pick out a coat for her,” She said.
He nodded his head, thankful for the chance to acquire some warmth.
Inside, Gar and Conner had been sitting at the kitchen table. Gar with flashcards in his hand and Conner with his head back, eyes to the ceiling, slightly annoyed.
Gar had his eyes glued to a card as he read a question to the other, “Alright, what’s a Reindeer?”
Conner groaned then looked at Gar, “A Reindeer is one of those things that Santa forces to fly him around.”
Gar looked at him with his eyes narrowed, “Santa doesn’t force them to fly him around. They just… do it because…”
Conner leaned forward, waiting for Gar’s answer, “Because…?” A slight smirk appeared on his features as Gar became flustered.
Gar hated when Conner would challenge him, half of the time, he would put up a good argument, and other times you’d have to explain it to him like a child.
Unfortunately, he couldn’t come up with a good response, so he moved on to the next card, “Next!”
Conner leaned back in his chair with a satisfied grin on his face.
“Finish the sentence, Secret Santa is…”
Conner glanced at the ceiling, thinking of the answer. He knew this one but always got it confused with White Elephant.
“Uh… the one where we pull names out of a hat and get that specific person a gift. But it’s a secret .
Gar thought if the answer was viable, “I guess that counts.”
“Great. Can we stop now? I’m pretty sure I know everything about Christmas,” He whined.
Dick and Kory entered the home, pitching ideas for their snowwoman.
“Besides, I’m the smartest one here. I retain information better than anyone,” Conner added to plead his case.
“What’s going on?” Dick asked as the duo stepped into the kitchen.
Gar turned to him, “I’m testing Conner on how well he understands Christmas. It is Baby’s first Christmas. ”
“ Baby’s first Christmas?” Dick asked.
Conner’s eyes widened as he looked at Gar.
Gar blinked a few times, realizing what he had said. The two of them had a complicated relationship that they had yet to disclose to the team.
“Who exactly is the baby?” They raised a brow, growing suspicious.
“Uh, Conner and Kory, obviously!” This is their first Christmas,” He added and everyone nodded their heads.
“That sort of makes sense,” Dick replied as Kory hummed, thinking of an idea.
“Well, since Conner is so sure that he knows everything about the holiday, why don’t we have a little friendly competition on who knows the most?”
“Baby’s first trivia!” Gar excitedly said.
Dick nodded his head in response to the name and the idea. He removed his coat and stood next to Gar.
“You sure, Kory? I think I have an obvious advantage,” Conner stated with confidence.
Kory pretended to think about it for a moment, looking at him, “Oh, yeah. Because Luthor’s specialty was Christmas and not anything diabolical, right?” She gave him a sly smile as the sarcasm rolled off her tongue. Gar and Dick shared a look as the two in front of them were smack-talking.
Gar shuffled the cards and handed half of the amount to Dick so they both could read the questions.
“Let’s talk prizes.”
“Okay, if you win, what do you want?” Kory asked.
“Ooh! I want to go to Tamaran.”
“Okay, and if I win, you have to sit on the sidelines for the next few missions,” She smiled.
Dick’s brow raised, “Kory.”
“What? I’m just as strong as he is, if not even stronger. It’s time I get a go at the big guys.”
Dick wanted to protest her choice for obvious reasons but didn’t say anything as they shook hands.
“Deal.”
A few minutes later, everyone found themselves in the living room. Kory and Conner standing on opposite sides of the room behind makeshift podiums. Tim and Rachel were sitting on the couch while Dick and Gar were standing in front of the two contestants.
Dick was a bit uncomfortable because Gar forced him to wear a red Santa hat along with an itchy, white beard, “Were the costumes really necessary?” He whispered to him.
Gar adjusted his elf ears, whispering back, “Quit complaining.”
“Looking good, guys!” Rachel said as she and Tim were laughing. Dick rolled his eyes as Gar smiled.
“Welcome to Baby’s First Trivia! I’m your host, Garfield Logan. And this is my co-host…” Gar shoved the imaginary mic in Dick’s face.
“Dick. Grayson,” He said unenthusiastically.
Tim and Rachel glanced at each other.
“Anyways, let’s meet our contestants! All the way from the Solar System’s hottest planet, we have Kory Anders!” Gar excitedly said as Kory waved to the audience, fake laughing as if there were a bigger crowd.
Dick cleared his throat as he was about to read his cue card, “And all the way from Cadmus Laboratories we have, Conner Kent…?” The audience tilted their heads at his description then laughed, continuing to clap for them both.
Gar and Dick both stepped to the side, giving their two contestants space.
“First question, what was Frosty the Snowman’s nose made out of?”
Conner and Kory simultaneously squeezed a squeaky red nose that was meant for a clown, but they just settled on calling it Rudolph's nose.
Conner was seconds faster, smiling as she rolled her eyes, “Easy. It was made out of a carrot.”
Gar made a buzzer sound with his mouth, indicating that the answer was wrong.
Kory managed to laugh as his smile vanished.
“Kory, do you have an answer?”
“The correct answer is… a button! Red to be exact.”
“That is correct!”
The audience cheered for her while Conner rolled his eyes.
The trivia continued for about 20 minutes. Kory and Conner had been taking turns on who was leading. One minute Conner’s overly confident grin would appear as he took the lead, but then Kory’s resilience would shine through and pull the mat from underneath him.
They were at the final question.
Neck and neck.
Dick read his cue card to himself, choking a bit at the question. Everyone looked concerned before he swiftly waved them off.
“All good. Last question. This is for all the, uh, candy canes…?”
Tim and Rachel both facepalmed.
“What is mistletoe meant for during the holidays?”
She knew the answer and so did he.
Immediately after the question, Kory’s buzzer could be heard, quickly blurting out, “It’s meant for kissing!”
“THAT IS CORRECT!” Gar and Dick yelled together.
The audience cheered and pulled out their confetti cannons, waiting for the sign to release them.
“THIS MAKES KORY THE WINNER OF BABY’S FIRST TRIVIA!!!”
The confetti flew around the room as Kory smiled. Tim, Rachel, Dick, and Gar all crowded Kory, cheering. Dick picked Kory up as everyone began to chant her name.
Kory!
Kory!
Kory!
Kory!
Conner couldn’t even stay mad, he joined in with everyone else, adding to the chant.
Moments later, Dick put her down, keeping her close to him, “Congratulations! I knew you were gonna win.”
“Oh, really?” She playfully responded.
“Yup. No doubt in my mind.”
She hummed as she looked at his outfit, adjusting his Santa hat, “So since you’re Santa Claus, does that make me Mrs. Claus?”
“Only if you sit on my lap,” He gave her a smirk which caused her to laugh.
“The corny dad jokes never end, do they?”
“Nope!” He removed his arms from her and nodded his head towards the bedroom.
Before the two headed down the hall, Kory looked at Conner, who was helping the kids clean up the confetti, “Hey, Conner.”
He looked at her as he was laughing with the others.
“I’ll see you on the sidelines, yeah?” She smiled before narrowing her eyes, “Oh, wait… I won’t. Have fun babysitting Krypto,” She gave him a wink before disappearing down the hall.
“Ouch!” Tim replied to Kory’s burn.
“Shut up,” Conner said to Tim, throwing some confetti at him.
“CONFETTI FIGHT!” Tim yelled, driving everyone in the room to start throwing it at each other.
