Curiosity Killed the Cat

Summary:

Soap's never-ending wonder for his sister-in-arms might have him bite off more than he can chew.

(Or, another time where Soap can't get a break from Ghost or his girl.)

Notes:

Yes, the CoD hyperfixation finally got me and it refuses to let me go >.<; ideas keep going brrr

Also, it's marked in the Reactivated series since it deals with my OC Luz, but it doesn't necessarily follow that timeline. So this is like a little sneak peek as I'm slowly writing that series.

Work Text:

Since her return to base during their last mission, Luz couldn't shake the feeling of being watched almost constantly. At least, outside her own quarters. On the tarmac, in the training hall, out in the shooting range. Something was always there watching her every move.

So the eyes on her in the mess hall as she eats are no different. But it also didn't help that she and Soap were the only two at dinner tonight.

She stabs her fork into her salad. "Hijo de mierda. Sergeant, there better be something on my face with all that staring you're doing, or I'm gonna give you something to stare at when I knock you out."

Seated across from her, Soap nearly drops the spoon in his hand, catching it before it can drop onto his tray. "I-I'm just eating here. How can you-?"

"I'm not an idiot, Soap. You keep eyeing me like something's on your mind."

"You're not discreet about it either, Johnny," Ghost booms, setting his tray down as he sits on the bench next to Luz.

That nearly has Soap falling off the bench. "Steaming bloody Jesus. Where the hell did you come from, Lt.?"

"I've been here. Just keeping you on your toes, sergeant," he chuckles, a slight smile in his voice. Luckily, it was only the three of them in the hall. Otherwise, the sound would have been out of place for anyone but the 141 members.

The same goes for the mouth uncovered from the balaclava as he eats, too.

"You were saying, Soap?" Luz asks almost bitterly, giving him her undivided attention.

Said Scot tugs at his shirt collar, suddenly realizing how warm it was in the room despite the December chill. "R-Right. There's just some things I've been meaning to ask ye."

His companions groan in displeasure, knowing his "few things" would really be a game of twenty questions. They were victims of that firsthand, taking the bulk of his questions instead of Price and Gaz most of the time.

"So, you're both together?" Soap asks, gesturing between the pair.

Luz nods, reluctant to answer. "In a better sense, yeah."

Ghost only eyes Soap as he chews his steak, wondering where he's going with this conversation. Having worked with the Scot for years, he knows it's never where he thinks it's going.

"So, you got to know Simon?"

Luz rolls her eyes. "That's usually how relationships go. You learn about each other."

"What's your favorite thing about him?"

"Fucking hell, Johnny." Ghost really wished his water was bourbon at this point.

She glances at the masked man, taking a moment to admire his features (or lack of thanks to the mask). "His smile."

"Seriously? Doesn't he wear the mask 24/7?"

"Twenty on a good day, actually."

"Watch it," Ghost bites out at Luz, but with no real malice in his voice.

"Alright, alright," she chuckles. "En serio? It's how he can kill a man in five seconds. Fucking hot, if you ask me."

Soap opens his mouth to respond, but closes it as he struggles to find the right words. "I… I should've known. You're practically made for each other."

"You better." Luz raises her cup to her lips. "Besides, we all know I can do it in four."

Soap scoffs. "I find that very hard to believe. Faster than Lt.? No way."

"I've seen it, Johnny. There's a reason they used to call her Reaper."

She grabs the steak knife, dancing the blade between her fingers as a sadistic grin forms on her lips. "Care to find out, Soap?"

"Ah, y-you know… I'm just… I have to… I'll t-take this to-go." He hops to his feet. He grabs his tray, mashed potatoes nearly sloshing off as he makes haste to the door, sweating bullets along the way.

"You didn't have to scare the sod," Ghost admits once they were alone in the room. He wouldn't admit it to anyone (not even himself), but Luz scared him at times. How she does, he was still trying to find out.

She returns to her salad with a chuckle, satisfied with her work. "Saved you the trouble, didn't I?"

"Heh. That's my girl."
