Feel so dumb (Advice/help)
I have been in the advanced classes at Tiny Herb for almost half a year, but I can’t seem to pull off a single advanced spell.
I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I’m following all the instructions exactly. I’m doing the exact same thing as my deskmate, I’ve even had him prepare the runes and circles for me sometimes, but my spells always end up sputtering out.
I’ve wanted to be a magician for so long, but now… I don’t even know any more. Maybe I’m just not talented enough.

My master says magic is less about going down the right path than about finding the right path for you. It could be you’re trying too hard to force it. If you want, I can give you some notes?

I once saw Master Zhang Xinjie use magic to sync every single clock on campus. I can never wear a watch again because I’m paranoid it will be the only one that’s off-sync.

Once I saw Master Han using spatial magic to suck up all the wallets people threw at his feet. There were so many wallets. So many. Master Han didn’t even blink.

Once I saw Master Zhang Jiale using illusion magic to talk to his reflection in the mirror. He was giving himself a pep talk. I didn’t have the heart to tell him his robes were inside out. I still think about that day every day

What kinds of potions are they making? (Discussion)
Huang Shao and Master Yu are always disappearing into the potions lab to do experiments. Sometimes they don’t come out for hours! Once I tried eavesdropping by the door and heard weird slurping sounds. What kinds of weird experiments could they be doing in there?

tl;dr for people who are lazy: EE released a statement that ye qiu is “retiring” as head mage and is being replaced by sun xiang, who said he will bring the sect back to its former glory despite never even training at EE.

Sure, EE was falling off in the rankings, but Ye Qiu isn’t even that old. He’s still one of the best battle mages on the continent. There’s gotta be some f-ed up politics going on that made him leave.

My master, the head mage of Tiny Herb, has been messaging someone a lot lately. It’s just a feeling, but I think it must be a romantic partner! He smiles sometimes when looking at his phone and it’s just so tender and sweet! The other day, I caught him sending a box of tea through a teleportation circle. I hope the person on the other side is happy with the gift!

It’s hard being a female mage (Discussion)
It sucks being the only girl in my class. People either look at me with pity or they think I must be crazy. Has it ever occurred to them that maybe I don’t want to specialize in domestics or admin? I like battles. I’m good at it. I’m better at long-range casting than any of the boys. Sigh, it’s just really frustrating sometimes. I wish I had another girl to talk to...

Found my missing master (Storytime)
After months of not knowing where my runaway master went, I finally found him after using an advanced tracking spell using 3! wild-boss-grade ingredients. It turns out all this time he was at the internet cafe ACROSS THE STREET AND NOBODY BOTHERED TO TELL ME, HIS APPRENTICE.
Anyway, I was really kind of upset. So I went over there on my day off to demand answers, but it turned out he wasn’t there because he was off visiting his significant other, who again, NO ONE BOTHERED TO TELL ME ABOUT. I couldn’t do anything but try to find my master another time.
A few days ago, I finally managed to meet up with my master at the internet cafe. I asked him how he was, and he told me he was doing a lot of research about making a lot of small circles rather than a few bigger ones. I made an offhand remark that it would be easier for him to do this research back at Excellent Era, to which he replied I should just consider this as his unplanned sabbatical. I was still kind of angry that he neglected to tell me he was leaving, so he offered to do battle with me as compensation, and I accepted.
I know that I’ve improved quite a lot in the past year and also in the past few months while he’s been gone, but he was still able to dismantle every single spell I tried and do it in a way where it was clear where I still had weaknesses. I could tell this was his way of expressing apology and care. That’s when I knew that he didn’t leave Excellent Era because he wanted to.
After our battle, he said, “I know you still have a few months left in your education, but you’re ready. As your master, I congratulate you on graduating from apprenticeship.” And then he gave me the staff he promised! He said if I needed help, I should go to Mucheng-jie or go see the head mage of Tiny Herb.
I went back to Excellent Era, but then one of the admin mages made some nasty remark about how I must be sooo grateful that Ye Qiu is gone and that Ye Qiu the tyrannical monster was holding me back or some nonsense like that. So I may have wacked him in the face with my staff. (pls don’t ban me mods, I swear I gave him a healing potion after. one of the low quality ones that itch)

Met a visiting scholar (Advice/help)
Last night I was in the training hall practicing spells. It was pretty late, so I was pretty sure I was the only one there at that time. Like usual, all the spells kept failing. Right when I felt like I was about to cry, a voice came out of nowhere and said, “You don’t need all of these runes.”
It was a man, he didn’t look very old, maybe a little bit older than Master Wang. But it was someone I’ve never seen before. So this guy reached across and drew a new circle and there were no control runes at all. He said, “Try it now.”
I was kind of nervous. One of the first things we learn at Tiny Herb is that control runes are the most important safety measure against mana explosions. And a mana explosion with an advanced battle spell could be disastrous. So I don’t know why I tried it, I guess I was just desperate for my spells to work, but I tried it, and it worked! I could instinctively feel how much mana to feed into the spell and how to adjust it when it went slightly over or under.
I looked at the man in wonder and he laughed. He said he was a visiting scholar and had gotten lost on his way to the head mage’s office. I was grateful, so I said I would show him the way.
We talked about magic and classes and he gave me more tips on when control runes were absolutely needed and when they were not. “Tiny Herb puts its trust in the runes. I put my trust in my mages and their foundational training.” He gave me one last piece of advice before slipping into the head mage’s office. “You should consider changing schools.”
I’m so conflicted. This scholar’s advice has done more for me in one night than half a year of our professors’ instruction. I would never be able to pass Tiny Herb’s exams without control runes, but leaving Tiny Herb… I’ve already invested so much time here… To leave in my last year and start from the beginning somewhere else… I don’t know what to do. Any advice?

Don’t take this as slander just because I’m from the rivaling school, but Tiny Herb’s environment seems kinda sucky. If Master Yu saw someone struggling as much as you’ve been, he would have never left it alone.

There are plenty of people who change schools for a number of reasons. Weigh the pros and cons carefully and if you still can’t decide, it might be helpful to discuss with someone you trust.

UPDATE: Thanks everyone for your advice. This is probably the scariest thing I’ve ever done, but I’ve decided to go for it. I don’t know where I’ll go yet, but who knows? Maybe that visiting scholar is taking apprentices. Wish me luck!

Arguably it’s Master Su Mucheng, but she’s not taking apprentices. Tbh, I think she’d be an awesome master, but she’s busy dealing with the trashfire that is EE right now.

Our Master Chu is the highest ranking female mage and is a strong supporter of more girls in the battle track, but she is already so stressed with her role as head mage. I’m not sure she has the capacity to take on both of you.

Our Head Mage, Master Wang keeps showing up late to class, but he never acknowledges it, he just starts teaching like nothing ever happened. So this time, when he showed up late, we all banded together to tease him.
We asked if he was late all the time because he was spending time with his secret boyfriend. Hahaha, he blushed a little and tried to change the subject, but we managed to stall for the entire class period by pestering him to tell us about their relationship. Whoever this guy is, Master Wang clearly thinks the world of him.
Honestly, I’m glad for it. Master Wang always seems so uptight and aloof. Talking about his love life makes him feel more like a human, you know?

Doesn’t work for us either. Master Yu is like an iron wall. The man would be an absolute mystery if not for Huang Shaotian. Stalling does work on Master Huang, but it works too well. If we asked Huang Shao about his personal life, we wouldn’t learn anything for the rest of the semester.
