Work Text:
Years ago when you met Matthias, you were a barista at the Crow Club. You often served drinks to the Crows and told about potentially useful gossip to Kaz when he dropped by which made him send Inej to investigate. One day, they brought in this man who looked exhausted but furious, and Kaz told you to tend his wounds. You looked at the man with a cocked eyebrow, and scoffed.
"He looks like he's gonna bite," you said. "And I'm not a Grisha. Why Nina can't do that?"
"Drusje," the man growled, making everyone else but Kaz flinch slightly.
Kaz cocked an eyebrow in turn. "There you go, that's the reason."
"He's a drüskelle?" You groaned. "Why would you— oh whatever, fine, bring him here. I'll clean his wounds."
Now you lightly smiled at the memory that had happened over ten years ago, you being frustrated about Kaz dragging a Grisha killing machine to be treated and now the situation was completely opposite, you were married to that killing machine, cooking while Matthias played with your six year old daughter in the living room.
You poured some oil onto the pan, set it on the fire and moved to prepare some vegetables to fry before the main course. But as you lowered the vegetables on the pan, the oil splashed violently and landed on your wrist.
You screamed out in pain, dropping the pot of hot oil from the pan and leaping back in shock. Your hands sizzled where the vegetable fat dripped down your arm and you tried to hastily wash it away while whimpering, and hardly noticed Matthias and your daughter having come into the room.
"Mum? What is going on? Are you alright?" Eline asked. She came running over, followed closely by her father, who took the pan off the stove and turned off the heat.
"I'm okay sweetheart, mum just needs some water," you said through gritted teeth as you continued to splash the burned skin with water from the sink. "It's nothing, don't worry."
But Eline took your hand to see the burn, and put her hand over it. The pain intensified, but only for a half of a second before it started disappearing. Eline stared your joined hands with a concentrated look and when she finally took her hand away, burn was gone. Completely gone.
"What… how did you do that?" you gasped, taking in the sight. Your little girl could heal cuts, like a... healer Grisha.
Eline grinned shyly, "I have done that for a while."
You looked over to Matthias who swallowed. "I'm going to have protect her from them."
Eline frowned as she looked at her father. "From who, daddy?"
"Bad people who would take you away," he replied and Eline frowned.
"They won't come for her. Don't scare her." you reassured. "Let's speak about it later."
Your husband took in a deep sigh, nodding slowly and you looked over to the food which hadn't luckily been burnt as Matthias was quick with saving it when they came to the room.
"Are you hungry from all that playing? Mommy knows she's hungry at least." you asked Eline and she nodded, seemingly forgetting the omnious tone of a few words changed between you and Matthias a moment earlier. Matthias had learned to see that Grisha aren't vicious and deadly like he had been told all his life, but his past as a drüskelle troubled him. They'd think of him as a traitor and his daughter an abomination if they ever found out about her.
But you knew you'd never hide your daughter, even though her existence might make things difficult for her one day. But you'd overcome it all as a family.
