Work Text:
- Okay so.
- When you first joined the Dregs, you and Kaz were both 13.
- He was slowly rising in ranks and you won’t lie, you were a little bit scared of him at first.
- And he thought you’re annoying (at least he gave you a picture like that) because he was always brooding and looking grim and you could as well be out there singing with a flower basket.
- He snapped at you quite a few times and that led to you thinking he hates you.
- When Kaz broke his leg, you were the one Per Haskell ordered to aid him in whatever he needed (much to your dismay).
- You were really careful and tentative around him, the boy was like a walking storm cloud and you just waited for a lighting to strike.
- Kaz kinda got to see this other side of you and was confused for a while because you were a completely different person.
- And you got to see a side of Kaz who didn’t snap at you all the time.
- During that time of you helping him, you learned so much of each other.
- You even got Kaz to smile.
- He didn’t even remember when he had smiled since Rietveld died.
- He grew to like you and by the time he could walk again, he had to come to terms that he had grown to care about you.
- So he tried to distance himself from you, starting to ignore you and glare at you when you spoke to him, which made you confused and a little bit frustrated.
- You and being frustrated didn’t really fit into the same sentence, everyone knew there was something wrong.
- Jesper was the first who saw that Kaz just pretended to dislike you and approached him when he was having a drink at the bar counter.
- “They nursed you back to your health, Kaz.”
- *sighs* “So?”
- “I know you grew to like them during that and now you try to push them away again. I hope you know that treating them like that will drive them away from you in the end.”
- Kaz just glared at Jesper and left the counter.
- But the Sharpshooter’s words still echoed in his mind.
- On the other hand, he wanted you to leave, he couldn’t care about anyone if he wanted to be seen as a demon.
- But he also knew that if you left, he likely wouldn’t be able to handle yet another loss.
- Jordie’s death wasn’t in his hands, but you staying was.
- So he stopped treating you badly, even when he was being careful with not giving you any hints of his feelings for you.
- There was something he didn’t know though; you had caught feelings of your own for him.
- It took a few more years, but Kaz finally could bring himself to tell you about how he felt about you when you were both 18.
- You felt like you wanted to float around Ketterdam before returning to him, and your smile told Kaz everything he wished to know.
- He smiled a little too, taking a brief hold of your hand before he returned to work and you curled up to the armchair beside him.
- You’re keeping your relationship as a secret (from others than Crows because they knew about your mutual pining long before you actually began dating).
- But there are some Dregs who are observant and guess it anyway (they won’t scatter it around though because the thought of Kaz’s cane terrifies them).
- But those Dregs who guess still doubt their suspicions - because a ray of sunshine and the demon just can’t match.
- But you did, and Kaz grew to love you so, so much, as you grew to love him too.
