Chapter 1: The Start of It All

Chapter Text

Haneoka Meimi was watching her father, Haneoka Genichiro perform another trick by using cards, and the fourteen-year-old girl had been completely taken by the trick. Meimi didn’t know why she was watching the trick very hard until she realized that she was calculating everything in her brain. The girl frowned, not wanting to upstage her own father in his career before turning to watch her mother, Haneoka Eimi, cook. When Eimi noticed Meimi had turned her attention to her, she smiled softly at her daughter, beckoning her to come closer. Once Meimi was close enough to see her mother’s gentle gaze, she smiled back. “Dad is amazing, isn’t he?” Meimi questioned and Eimi nodded her head, agreeing with her daughter.

“Yes, he really is.” Eimi continued to stir the soup while she watched her loving husband with a smile on her face. Meimi noticed the look in her mother’s eyes and she couldn’t help but look away, feeling like she was interrupting something extremely special. However, she knew it wasn’t her fault; her parents really enjoyed being cute when they were around each other and Meimi didn’t mind it, finding it very cute that her parents were still heavily in love with each other. The girl’s thoughts then wandered about attending her third year of middle school and while she was excited, she really didn’t want to deal with Asuka Daiki, often called Asuka Jr. He’s so immature. Meimi wished she could teach the boy a lesson but fighting would get her expelled and she didn’t want to break her parents’ hearts by getting into a physical altercation with a boy.

“Meimi, you’re glaring. What are you thinking about?” Genichiro called out to her, causing Meimi to blink and come back to herself. She didn’t know whether to be honest with her parents about her worries or not but she knew that she could trust them with anything.

“I’m worried about getting into a fight with Asuka Jr.” Meimi went ahead and ripped off the bandaid, knowing she only had to be honest with her parents. Her parents looked at her in shock, having assumed that she had a crush on the boy, and clearly, they were wrong.

“Do you not like him?” Her mother asked and she watched as Meimi’s face changed, her nose scrunching up as she let out a small huff.

“No.” Meimi responded, hating that her voice had gone sharp as she answered her mother’s question but her mother understood, seeing that her daughter truly didn’t like Daiki. I see. The woman seemed to have figured it out but she didn’t want to assume anything until Meimi actually told her what type of person she wanted to date. I will let her come to me with that. Eimi knew it would be better to let Meimi open up in regards to that conversation rather than forcing Meimi to tell her anything. I have to let her figure herself out. I will be here to answer her questions. Of course, Eimi had a feeling that the conversation would happen sooner rather than later but she definitely didn’t mind, wanting Meimi to be able to trust her with something important to her, especially in regard to her sexuality.

Meimi stared at her mother, wondering if her mother had a clue about what her type was and yet, she wanted to tell her mother that she thinks she is attracted to girls. Girls are pretty. Meimi thought, wondering if she had a good example of a pretty girl in mind. When Meimi realized she didn’t, she huffed, knowing that she found girls pretty; she just needed to find her type in a girl.

And Meimi found her type in a girl when she met some random girl.

A girl who was sweet and gentle.

A girl who randomly approached her one day.

A girl who quickly became her best friend.

Mimori Seira was that girl and Meimi didn’t want to ruin things between them. It was bad enough Meimi was crushing on a nun-in-training and it was clear Seira knew nothing about romance. And yet, Meimi didn’t consider that a bad thing but she wanted to keep Seira in her life for as long as she could.

Six Years Later

Twenty-year-old Meimi felt her nails dig into the palms of her hands as she continued to stare at her own empty grave. Tears streamed down her face, wishing she could take back the previous six years she had been gone, and yet, Meimi knew she couldn’t. “I need to see Seira.” Meimi hoped that the woman would be willing to see her. After all, she fucking dipped out of Japan just to keep Rosemary away from her family and friends. Fucking good that did. Meimi didn’t want to see Rosemary’s claws all over Seira, knowing that the older woman was smart enough to have realized where Meimi’s affections had fallen and she didn’t want Rosemary to notice.

She didn’t want Seira to get used by her mother’s enemy. Meimi bit her lip, knowing what she had done was probably the stupidest thing she had ever done. “I left without saying goodbye and I hurt Seira.” Meimi knew that the woman knew she wasn’t dead, which was why Seira didn’t seem too hurt at her funeral but it did hurt to see the pained look in her eyes because Meimi knew Seira was smart. She knew that Seira had figured it out all those years ago. And I still ran away like an idiot. Meimi growled, unable to believe herself.

She never wanted to hurt Seira six years ago but she was stupid and it cost her dearly. Rosemary never stopped chasing her and now that Maju had gotten older, she has also gotten better with her tricks and it only serves to keep on pissing Meimi off, knowing that Maju enjoyed frustrating people.

Meimi wondered if Seira wanted to ever see her again. She definitely wouldn’t blame the woman if she didn’t.

Hell, she didn’t even want to see herself.
