Chapter Text
Lucy Sidle-Grissom, fresh from her valedictorian honor at Palo Verde High School, eagerly applied for an internship at her parents' former workplace as soon as she stepped foot at university. Said place also happens to be where Mom and Dad fell in love years back, so when the opportunity came up to be a double major in Physics and Biology intern at Las Vegas Police Department, of course she grabbed it with both hands.
She felt a little odd walking through these hallways, hoping to not get recognized at the same time she did want to get recognized so people would tell her about her parents' fame around here. Her goal was really clear: impress her Lab Director and guarantee a position at LVPD as soon as she graduated.
What she did not expect was to walk into the office of this Lab Director and be face to face with her biggest childhood crush. Lindsay Willows, daughter of Catherine Willows, obviously followed in her mom's footsteps and very brilliantly became the youngest Lab Director of LVPD's science division. She always admired Linds so so much, and used to follow her around all her childhood. Always wanting to be as good as her, both overachievers. Almost just as genius as Lindsay herself at anything science-y. Of course, she was going to become the little genius that she is, her parents were Grissom and Sara, for goodness` sake!
“Hiii, I heard you were coming! I’m excited to give you the tour.”
“Oh… you knew it was me. Aren’t people going to say I just got the job because we know each other… and our parents are like best friends or something?”
“Well, technically, my mom hated your mom hahaha just kidding. And no, people will not find it suspicious, everyone had access to your test scores, they all know you deserve to be here, fair and square. Even if your name is Sidle-Grissom, a little suggestive, anyways.”
“Well… ok. So… where should we start? I don’t think I need the full tour, we practically grew up here.”
“Hahaha, well, yeah, I’ll show you the new facilities, then.” She smiles while leading us out the door to the newly reformed DNA labs. “So here’s the first stop. You know very well how DNA technology advances by the minute, so most of these machines are very very new, so please be careful with all of them.”
“Yes, sir!” I replied like I used to when we were kids and she used to boss me around, and I instantly go red, my vision goes black and I think I’m gonna die.
Lindsay laughs and smiles like Lucy’s the funniest human being in the world. As we move past this episode away from my utter embarrassment. She walks me through all the old labs, new parts of the facility. A place I knew very well, because sometimes, against the better judgment, Mom brought me along for work, on the days she got worried when I was a little sick, or just because she worried in general, us living in Las Vegas. And both her and Dad working in law enforcement.
I never understood why I wasn't in School sometimes. Later I learnt that some days, they were working on a high profile case, and I could easily become a target, when the criminal was loose, walking around the city, just waiting for an opportunity. So it was constant "Bring your daughter to work" days. I didn't actually mind it, I loved coming to the lab, people used to show me around the labs, explain what they were doing. Pretty much put me on the path I'm currently walking on, so... No surprises I turned out wanting to be a Criminal investigator. And with all that time in my hands and very good teachers, it was CSI-schooling, instead of regular home-schooling, all the way.
And so she just showed me around, introduced me to some people I didn’t know on the Labs. And finally at the end of the day told me I didn’t need to work today, but to be there tomorrow at 3 PM, all nice and ready to get work done. ‘Cuz she wasn’t gonna go easy on me just because we were practically family.
Right… Family…
And so I bid my farewell for the day to everyone whose attention I could catch, that wasn’t too deep into work to not notice me leaving.
As I arrived home, I had promised mom and dad Facetime when I got home, so I did. I had to break the news, I hadn’t told them what my plan had been, to intern at LVPD, so this was going to be great I knew it, yeah…
“Night, mom! How is everything going?”
“How are we? How are you?? First week of college! Everything went well today?”
Right, college, I had forgotten, I was expected to be excited about a bunch of youngsters coming in and out of a classroom to hear boring people talking.
“Yeah, everything went great. I am well settled into this lovely solo dorm room.” I say as I showed her around briefly. “Where’s dad?”
“Just about to start cooking. Say hi, dear. Lu’s on Facetime here.”
She directed the phone to dad’s face. “Hi, baby. Everything neat?”
“Yeah, dad. You?”
“Just as.” He replies smiling his Gil smile. One that only appeared when he was genuinely happy. Seems to have been happening quite often since the day they decided to be together, at least that’s what mom says. I believe whole heartedly because I grew up very happy with the parents I have. Not so much family on my mom’s side. But grandma Betty has always been around, I learnt to communicate with her very early on, which was really praised by both my parents. And so I grew up.
“So, baby tell us more about classes, Professors…? Everything!” Sara uncharacteristically enthusiastically asked.
“Mama, just because you had a thing for Professors, does not mean I will develop one as well. It’s not genetic.” Sara grumbles as Lucy teases her.
Grissom tsks and says: “Do you have evidence that can prove that statement, dear?”
And then it’s time for Lucy to sulk and Sara smiles fondly at the two most important people on her life.
“Ok, so… About classes there isn’t much to tell, we’re just starting out. But… Uhm, I do have something I need to tell you guys.”
Grissom makes that facial expression like he knows what’s coming but doesn’t jump to conclusions or doesn’t want to express and Sara frowns just the tiniest bit. She knows when her daughter doesn’t straight up says what she’s thinking, it usually isn’t a good sign.
And they know that if they want her to be open with her, they shouldn’t push. She’ll tell them at her own pace.
“Well, I know this might not be the most popular decision in this family, but I start as an intern at LVPD tomorrow night after school!" She finally blurts out.
