Work Text:
At a preschool in Musutafu, young children can be seen playing. The large classroom that was decorated with colorful flowers and pretty blue birds smelled like sweaty kids and oily paint.
While the twenty or so kids played across a large green mattress, 4-year-old Izuku Midoriya quickly ran behind 5-year-old Katsuki Bakugo .“Come on Deku! You’re my sidekick you have to be faster!” the spiky blond laughed as Izuku’s stubby legs tried to keep up. “Kacchan you’re going too fast!”
Katsuki pulled out his plastic sword and teased the freckled boy. “What good is a sidekick if you can’t even do the basics? Useless Deku!” Just when the other boy tried to protest, the pink-haired teacher with a plant quirk came up to them.
“Alright everyone! It's almost home time!” The teacher pulled out a clipboard as she started to lead the children out of the classroom. The little students quickly ran to their colorful cubbies, putting away the toys and grabbing their bags.
“My mommy is picking me up for ballet today!” A young girl, Naomi happily said.
“My parents are forcing me to go to some lame family meeting.” A boy with a pair of red wings, Tsubasa said.
Katsuki gave them a smug grin “My parents are away for work so I can play heroes all day!” He then turned to Izuku “Hey Deku, is your creepy dad picking you up?”
Izuku happily zipped up his backpack and pulled out his red shoes. “Nope. My uncle is spending the day with me!”
“Doesn’t he have like cancer or something?” Katsuki casually side eyed. “Bakugo! How can you be so heartless and mean!” the girl screamed back.
“My uncle was just born sick with breathing problems. But he’s super fun and we love to play heroes.”
Katsuki ‘totally-not-jealous’ Bakugo smirked “Whatever. Your family is super weird Deku.”
Right on cue, the teacher came up from behind to call Izuku.
“Midoriya-kun, your uncle is here!”
Izuku excitedly put on his yellow backpack and ran at the speed of light towards the door.
“UNCLE YOI-”
Izuku quickly stopped dead in his tracks.
Standing near the pink butterfly door, a tall man with brown spiky hair stood, holding his phone. He seemed to be texting someone. As the man looked up over Izuku- his most visible feature, a large diagonal scar across his face. Wearing cargo pants and a flannel dress shirt with rolled-up sleeves, he casually addressed Izuku.
“Oi brat. What took you so long?”
Izuku looked absolutely crushed. Second raised an eyebrow “Hey what’s with that look?”
Uncle Nishi was Uncle Yoichi’s husband. Izuku loved his favorite Uncle Yoichi because they always read comics and played heroes together. Yoichi was just like Izuku, kind and gentle.
When he was introduced to Nishi, well let’s just say he preferred his Uncle Yoichi.
“Where’s Yoi oji-san?”
The Second user put his phone away. “He had to stay a bit longer. Your dad was being a piece of shit. He’s gonna join us later on anyways. Now hurry up I don’t have all day.”
Uncle Nishi wasn’t a really fun person.
Taking Izuku by his small hand, the two walked over to the Second’s pickup truck.
“Your annoying obsessive dad won’t stop texting me. Anyways, how was your day at school? I hope they actually teach you guys something instead of just playing around with quirks. You know back in my days-”
Ah, here we go again. Izuku pouted.
His uncle continued to talk about ‘the good old day’ while the brunette carefully put Izuku in the toddler car seat. “Yoichi always used to talk about those comic books when we trained, I didn’t really mind cuz I thought it was cute…”
Izuku made a queasy face. Though Izuku couldn’t deny how fascinating it was to learn about the dawn of quirks, sometimes his uncle just needed to shut up.
His mom wouldn’t approve of him using that word.
“Hey kid? Are you listening? You really are like Yoichi, always daydreaming.” He muttered. Izuku smiled as Nishi sat in front of the wheel.
“All right, since we have some time before your uncle comes along, I suppose you can pick where we can go.” Izuku’s eyes instantly lit up.
“Comic store!”
“No.”
“All Might kiddy park!”
“That brat-infested dump? Absolutely not.” Second shrieked
“Doggie Park?”
“We didn’t even bring Machia.”
“Candyland or the hero store?” Izuku pleaded
“Too much sugar, I don’t want you bouncing off the walls. We can stop by the hero store.”
“Nishi-oji, you’re a party pooper.” Izuku sunk into the seat pouting with his arms crossed as the Second user made a U-turn. “Yoichi and the others are always spoiling you; someone needs to be strict.”
A few minutes later, they parked in front of the hero merchandise store. “Alright.” Second pulled out some cash “I’ll give you 30 bucks. You can buy a lot with that right?”
Izuku shrugged “Uncle that’s enough for one All Might toy.” His uncle looked up surprised “A cheap plastic toy for that much?”
“Inflation is cruel. All Might merch is expensive.” Some puppy eyes will help!
“Or maybe you can buy something not All Might for a change. They have developmental coloring books and other supplies here, maybe you can buy a hero guide.”
Now Izuku was a bit annoyed. “Too bad. All Might REALLY makes daddy mad.”
“I’ll give you 10 more bucks but that’s it.” Second pulled out the dollar note which Izuku’s chubby hands gladly accepted.
“We have an hour before we need to meet Yoichi, so I guess you can take your time.” They casually walked into the large retail store.
“Irasshaimase!” A young teen worker greeted them at the door. Izuku politely waved.
“Make sure not to touch whatever you don’t want. Here,” Second bent down to grab a red basket “you can put the toys you want in this basket.”
Izuku’s eyes sparkled and with a grin, he marveled at all the captivating radiant, and vibrant colored objects that filled the shelves around him.
There were framed hero posters surrounding the turquoise walls on the side and an army of big All Might Funko pops above him! The claw machines full of rare hero collectibles were crowded and children around him were in awe at the newest Best Jeanist and Edgeshot plushies.
They also sold hero treats and snacks!
“I’ll go check out the manga section for something. Call me when you’re done.” Second casually walked away.
Probably another manga for dear Uncle Yoichi. Izuku thought.
His poor uncle’s sickness has been a little out of control recently. With his dad and Second constantly fighting over him and his treatment, Yoichi decided to check himself into a hospital ‘alone’ for the week to stop the bitter quarrel. The manga was probably an apology.
Izuku quickly ran to the All Might figurine section and picked his target. All Might from the bronze age it was! “Woah look at the cool details!” he said excitedly.
Izuku looked at the price range. $35 for the regular-sized figure. Well, he could get this figure and have $5 left for an All Might button set. He put the items in his basket and casually looked around.
“Oooh.” The exclusive hero merchandise was in locked cabinets. This much cost a fortune!
“Hey kid,” another young employee, wearing a red uniform with a matching hat standing behind the cash register was clearly annoyed with him. “Keep your greasy hands off my cabinets if you’re not gonna buy anything.”
Izuku was taken aback by how rude the employee was and his face flushed, clearly embarrassed. “S-Sorry mister…” he stuttered.
“Hey dipshit.” Izuku turned around and saw his Uncle Nishi frowning behind him.
Putting his hands in his pockets, the Second user casually approached the checkout lane. The employee raised an eyebrow. “You like bullying 4-year-olds? I’m just trying to buy my kid a fucking toy. You talk to all customers like that?”
Izuku was in full panic mode. “Oji- just leave it! It’s fine…”
Nishi was taken aback “You’re gonna let some bully step on you? No way in fucking hell. Listen here you menace I will be making a complaint to your manager-”
Ah, here we go. The customers around them were staring now. Izuku started to sweat as his face turned even redder.
“I’ll buy those three All Might figurines! I’ll buy all of them!”
It really shocked Izuku how much his uncle and Kacchan had in common. Second was like Bakugo 2.0 but more maturely and serious. He thought about Yoichi and Nishi’s relationship.
Ah. I guess it runs in the family.
As the Second user continued screaming at the apologetic manager, Izuku felt a warm feeling in his chest.
He always thought Second just tolerated him. Nishi can be cold, conflicting, and outright intimidating. He was boldly honest and didn’t hesitate to take the lead.
But he cares. Izuku gave his uncle a big smile as they turn around to leave. Two big bags full of All Might merch were casually thrown in the trunk.
“I guess this must be a great day for you.” Second muttered as he stared into his empty wallet. He then gave Izuku a small smile. “Well, at least it will piss off your old man. Bastard will be flabbergasted.”
Izuku giggled “I like hanging out with you oji-san.”
“Oh yeah? I thought you liked Uncle Yoichi more.” Second was clearly offended
“I do! But now I know you're super cool too. Like Kacchan.”
Nishi looked embarrassed but he was clearly in a better mood.
“Let’s hurry and pick up your uncle from the hospital, hm?”
Izuku giggled “Yayy~!”
