Treasure

Summary:

Dragon Kim Namjoon reflects on his hoard. Not just a treasure, but a family.

Notes:

This AU grabbed me and wouldn’t let go the other day. So far, this is all I have. Definitely open to making it a collection of drabbles or a larger fic if there’s interest and the idea strikes.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Dragon Namjoon knows the hoarding instinct is in his blood, as much a part of him as his fire, scales and wings. He has shelves of books and a greenhouse of plants. One night, he glances around the den and comes to the unexpected but not unwelcome realization, that he has hoarded himself a family.

He didn't mean to. He didn't meticulously search for them in old libraries or nurseries. he didn't buy them or trade for them. They just sort of fell into his orbit and never left.

First had been Yoongi. They had met as teens in a seedy underground club for immortals. The young naga had been so scared of himself. Scared of the venom that dripped from his fangs so he spat it out in his words instead.

They fought a lot back then. Two newly matured young men with more magic than they knew what to do with. But they stuck with each other through those growing pains. And eventually Yoongi had tamed the dark parts that lurked in his mind. He was still smart and sharp with his words but he was also so observant. And so quietly loving.

Hoseok had come next. Namjoon had immediately recognized him as another creature of fire. The phoenix shone so brightly. His smile nearly as blinding as his fiery wings. Hoseok’s tears could heal physical wounds and his hugs invisible ones.

But they had to be careful with him. He felt so much, he gave so much of himself to the others that if they weren't careful, he could combust. It wasn't pretty when it happened, ashes and sparks flying everywhere, destruction in his wake. But they didn't love him any less for it.

Seokjin had charmed Namjoon from the beginning. The dokkaebi with his cheesy jokes, his sleight of hand tricks that were not just illusions , his cheshire grin and squeaky laugh.

It took awhile for him to open up to the others. But he did eventually. Behind the bravado was someone who was fearful his unsavory parts would chase the rest away. As long as he never showed them, he was safe, he could stay. Through hugs and tears they promised to love all of him. And he promised to reflect that love right back onto them.

Jungkook quite literally crashed into their works. A falling star landed in Namjoon’s pond full of magical plants. And out of the water came Jungkook, eyes wide and full of wonder at this strange new place. He absorbed knowledge like a sponge. He excelled at anything he tried. A true golden child, everything he did was destined to be a success.

He radiated innocence and earnestness. He loved big and dreamed even bigger. And when he got lost in his thoughts or overwhelmed by the world and its evils the others would bring back his glow, slowly and carefully.

Siren Taehyung was next. A chance meeting with another immortal brought the beauty into their fold. At night he would croon epic ballads of lost love and the sea, of magic and fate.

At first Namjoon couldn't understand him. His fire and Taehyung’s water at odds with one another. But the more time he spent with this odd, intriguing boy, the easier he found it. The dragon slowly learning a new way to see things and a new appreciation for the mundane.

The last of them, the one who completes us he thought, was the forest nymph, Jimin. The petite fae danced on the wind, left flower petals where he walked and summoned sunshine with his laugh. His beauty was similar to Taehyung’s; enticing and dangerous at equal turns.

He was pure love and kindness at his best, but when Jimin was angry the sky turned dark and the ground shook. Eventually his rage would ebb, and all would be forgiven, the nymph couldn't seem to entertain a grudge.

I suppose it's true, Namjoon thought and chuckled to himself. I inadvertently hoarded myself a family. As he looked at each of them, he let his gaze grow soft, the fire in his eyes burning with love. My most precious treasure.
