Missing Family at Christmas
Harry looked out the window looking down at the grounds of Hogwarts a moving photo clutched in his hand watching Ron, Fred and George throwing snow balls at each other in a massive snow ball fight surprisingly he couldn’t see Hermione he thought she would be down there with them, he had just gone to go get his scarf as he had forgotten it but he had gotten distracted by the photo album given to him by Hagrid in first year.
This time of the year was hard, at first it was because Dudley was spoilt and he was lucky to get the scraps, he watched as a mum and dad loved him and cherished him and Harry was left without even a hug. When he came to Hogwarts, he realised what true love of a child is it is the care package of home baked goods and letters home, it is a scolding when you have done the wrong and made him yearn for it. Even though the Weasley’s never had much money, Ron’s mum always made sure to bake him something and made a sweater.
That first Christmas at Hogwarts he had been overwhelmed by the sweater and the love put into each one and the fact that Mrs Weasley had made him one just because Ron mentioned that he might not get presents, and the love each sibling even Percy who wasn’t the biggest fan of his family had made sure to spend some time with them.
This Christmas was the hardest with the tri wizard tournament he wanted to cuddle into his mum and cry over the danger faced in the tournament, he wanted his dad and mum to threaten anyone who even dared enter their son into a dangerous tournament and to fuss over him. He wanted Sirius and his dad to tease him over the fact that he had to the ball and then Remus to scold them because he was distressed.
“Harry” He heard a concerned voice behind him and turned his head.
“Hermione, I thought you would be downstairs with the others I said I would be down there in a minute.”
“ I got worried when you were gone for over half an hour.” Hermione then looked him up and down to make sure he wasn’t hurt and saw the photo so he tried to put it behind his back. “Oh, Harry”
“You don’t have to worry I just got a little side tracked.”
“I didn’t think but it must be hard, why didn’t you tell us you were feeling bad”
“it’s nothing I don’t want you to be worried I just got side tracked.”
“But I was insensitive complaining how over protective my parents are how they wanted to see me over Christmas but were understanding when I told them about the ball.”
“It’s fine”
Harry hadn’t realised in the time that they had been talking and Harry had been faced away from the window that Ron, Fred and George had stopped playing and come to see what was taking them so long.
“You guys plotting against us?” George asked jokingly as they entered the common room.
When George said that Harry had reached the end of his emotional tether already emotional from thinking about his parents and exploded.
“I’M FINE ALRIGHT I DON’T CARE ABOUT YOUR FEELING, I AM SICK OF PEOPLE ASKING ME ARE YOU OK. NO I AM NOT I HAVE NO ONE, IF I COULD I WOULD TRADE EVERY DOLLAR FOR A FAMILY. IM STUCK IN A TOURNAMENT THAT I AM EXPERIENCED ENOUGH FOR. AND YOU RON, I THOUGHT YOU WERE MY BEST FRIEND AND THEN YOU ABANDON ME WITHOUT EVEN ASKING ME FOR THE TRUTH”
Harry looked very embarrassed and the others were stunned by the sudden outburst.
“You should have said you felt this way mate, its not very good to keep these things in. I am sorry if I complain too much about mum and dad, I should be more considerate of your feelings”
“it’s fine”
“ No, no, no I have not been a very good friend this year, I was jealous about stuff you have no control over, I know you don’t like the attention and you would not want to put your name down for such a stupid tournament. The truth is I was worried about you and it was easier to be angry than to want to admit I was worried; I love you man you are my best friend”
“You should have told me I love you too”
They sat there in complete silence for a minute. Hermione broke the silence.
“Boys hold things until it all explodes.” Hermione sighed. “We better get down and get some before it’s all gone and after that we can go to the quidditch pitch and you guys cans fly on brooms while I read in the stand”
They all nodded in agreement and went towards the exit, Harry put the photo in his pocket so that he could feel a little closer to his parents today. Vowing to send a letter to Sirius to see how he was as it must be hard without his parents.
