Tim had invited the other archival staff over for New Year's
Sasha agreed as it was their tradition
Martin agreed as he didn't particularly want to spend the New Years with his mom or alone
Jon agreed as it felt rude to decline and also Georgie was going to a bar for New Years and he didn't particularly feel like getting drunk

Tim wasn't hosting a proper party but it was a celebration he bought sparkling cider and alcohol and plenty of food, probably more than enough considering there was only four of them
He decided against getting those little kazoo noise maker things as he assumed Jon would hate them
When he told Sasha why he didn't get them she told him that just because Jon was grumpy it didn't mean he hated fun and then Tim reminded her of how horrible the things sounded and she agreed with him but John would probably hate them because of the noise as that was one of the reasons he said he probably wouldn't be going to any parties
He set up everything for New Year's and eventually just waited for the others to arrive

Salsa was the first to arrive which was expected
Martin and John ended up arriving together with Tim made some suggestive comments about but sauce to set them up very quickly by throwing crackers at him
He managed to catch all of them luckily but she did not stop until he did

"What was Tim talking about?" Jon asked Martin curiously and a little worried
"What?" Martin said confused by the random question as he did not put the pieces together before responding "oh! Sorry I didn't process what you said before responding, Tim's just weird sometimes, he seems to think I have a crush on someone at The Archives and I don't know if he thinks it's you or if- I don't know I mean I don't like you, he's just weird I mean I like you but in a friend way, I'm going to stop talking now sorry"
"No need to apologize I was just confused by how he was acting."
"Sorry no you jus- sorry, I'm going to shut up now" Martin said with a little nervous laugh
Jon giggled a little but hid his smile behind his hand as he didn't want to seem as though he was mocking Martin
"I- did you just laugh?"
"No I don't know what you're talking." about John said still hiding his smile behind his hand
"You did! I got you to laugh." Martin said beaming with pride
Jon was going to tell him off for being so proud of something so stupid but the look on Martin's face set him off, he looked so genuinely happy that he made Jon happy
"I'm sorry if I ever made it seem like I was incapable of being happy." Jon said with a bit of a joking tone although he genuinely meant it
"You didn't, I mean Tim seems to think you did but I knew you were just a little rough around the edges."
Jon wanted to say something more, he wanted to apologize for how he acted with Martin or just anything but he couldn't, he just stared, he had been nothing but horrible to Martin and Martin still believes there was good in him
Martin believed in him and smiled at him and made him tea and there was no ulterior motive and he wasn't just trying to get a raise or promotion from it and Jon didn't know how to deal with that fact, he assumed Martin was nice out of wanting something, out of wanting to get a raise or have him talk good about him to Elias or something like that but Martin was just nice he didn't want anything from it he was just nice
"Do you want water or something? I'm going to go get myself some water and I could get you some if you want" not asked it was least he could do Martin was always so good to him
"Uh sure." Martin said smiling

Sasha was in the kitchen Tim had forgot something that he insisted was essential for New Years so she decided to just wait in the kitchen in case anyone needed drinks or something as she knew where everything was
Jon walked in, bright red and seeming a little bit confused
"You all right there Jon?" Sasha asked a bit concerned
Jon jumped slightly when she spoke as he hadn't noticed her "oh you're in here, hello, I'm fine, I think."
"Tim seems to think Martin likes you and insists that you're an asshole and will break his heart over it, I've disagreed, seems I'm right."
What? what are you? I'm- I don't like- I mean Martin's nice and I mean some people- I mean he's handsome obviously but- I mean- but not- I don't- he's not-"
"You think he's handsome?"
"I mean of course he is, he's very handsome but I mean I'm sure there's lots of people think that."
"Not based on the way he talks about himself they do or at least they don't say it."
"What? Really?"
"Mmhm"

Martin decided that he was going to wander is he had nothing better to do he ended up walking by the kitchen and overhearing John calling him pretty he knew he's in eavesdrop he knew it was wrong but his crust is called him pretty and he didn't know what to really do
He felt like a little boy again being called handsome by one of his friends once they found out he was the boy and not a girl it was the first time he'd ever really felt gender euphoria
After about a minute of eavesdropping he turned around and walked back to the couch bright red and almost bouncing with joy
He tried to calm himself down knowing John would come back with water any minute but he couldn't, he was so happy

Eventually Tim came back he had forgotten to buy paper party hats that was the essential thing he had forgotten
"Ten. Nine. Eight. Seven. Six. Five. Four. Three. Two. One. Happy new years!" The four said all happy for the year yet to come
