Sirius And Remus' New Year's Kiss

Summary:

"Five minutes to go, Moony."

"Hey padfoot did you know there's this stupid tradition where you kiss someone on New Year's at midnight? I always imagined you'd like that kind of tradition, too bad you won't be able to do it this year."

Work Text:

The Potters were throwing their annual New Year's Eve party.

And just like their Christmas parties their son's friends and friends' families were invited.

Except for Sirius, his parents didn't come and they also weren't invited because they just suck.

The Lupins didn't stick around as although they didn't dislike The Potters, they had no particular want to interact with people.

Remus stayed though as even though his parents didn't enjoy the the party he did, well he didn't particularly enjoy the party he hated loud noises and crowds but he enjoyed hanging out with his friends so he stayed.

"Hey Moony, what ya doing?" Sirius asked, walking into the room where Remus was going to be staying the night.

"Hey Pads, nothing just reading," Remus said, not looking up from his book.

"Mmm, so me, James, and Peter had an idea for something big to do at midnight, wanna join?" Sirius stepped closer and pushed the book down.

"Depends, does it involve mass destruction?" Remus questioned, finally looking at Sirius

"If I say 'no' would you believe me?"

Remus just simply shook his head.

"No, it doesn't."

"Sirius, come on, be serious."

"I am 'Sirius'."

"And I will throw you out a window if you make that joke again."

"Oh c'mon, it's funny and it really doesn't I swear, well if we do it right it won't anyway."

"'Do it rig'- are you going to set off fireworks in the house again? The Potters already explained how dangerous muggle fireworks are."

"It wouldn't be muggle fireworks."

"Wait, I'm sorry, there are wizard fireworks."

"Remus we have wands and can kill people with magic, why wouldn't we make fireworks?"

"I don't know! The way wizards chose to use their magic is very confusing."

"I- no, no that-that's fair, yeah we're weird with magic but yes there are magic fireworks and if done properly they don't cause any destruction or harm."

"There's a 'but' in that sentence, isn't there?"

" But we don't know how to do it and we don't have very long to practice and we were wondering if maybe you could help because you're really good at charms and it's a charm."

"And by 'we' you mean Peter decided that I should make sure you don't blow the house up?"

"Yep, will you?"

"Okay," Remus said, with a sigh "but if you get in trouble for this, it's not on me."

"There's our Moony." Sirius said, with a soft loving smile that made Remus blush more than it should have.

"Shut up Pads" Remus said, smiling like an idiot, that smile shouldn't have made Sirius as flustered as it did.

"Moony there's my favorite.. um, uh, werewolf...?"

"Prongs, I'm the only werewolf you know."

"And you're my favorite….?" James said in an unsure tone.

"Sirius already told me why you need me here," Remus said giggling a bit at his friend's horrible attempt at complimenting him

"'kay good because I love you I really do but I don't- I'm really bad at compliments."

"I know I've watched you try to flirt with Lily since like second year, you're horrible at it mate."

"Alright enough about how horrible James is talking to people let's figure out how the fuck to do this"

"Oka- where's Peter?"

"Oh he ditched us once we told him how dangerous this was because he thought we were joking and then he realized we weren't and he left."

"You think he went to tell parents?"

"No, because he would find it funny if we got in trouble for this going horribly wrong."

"True, he would, I mean I would too but if this goes wrong I might never be allowed to hang out with you guys again so I'm helping"

"Knew we could count on you, Moony"

They finished perfecting the spell with thirty minutes to spare and decided to go see what the actual party was like as they had been spending the entire time after dinner working on the spell.

Peter was playing chess with James's dad, he refused too look at the other Marauders for a bit, though quickly cheered up when the included him in a game of cards with Mrs. Potter.

All the other adults were talking boring things like politics. Though they changed the conversation topic when they noticed the boys, the boys didn't notice the change in conversation.

"Five minutes to go, Moony."

"Hey Padfoot, did you know there's this stupid tradition where you kiss someone on New Year's at midnight? I always imagined you'd like that kind of tradition, too bad you won't be able to do it this year."

"Says who?"

"Well unless you want to kiss James or Peter or me or some adults you don't really have a lot of options and it's normally the person you like or are dating."

"I could kiss you," Sirius said a little quieter than he had been talking before.

"What?" Remus hadn't heard him properly, he almost didn't tell Remus what he had said.

"I mean if you were okay with it, I would kiss you." But he did tell Remus, anything for his Moony.

"Why- why- why- why would- I- um what?" Remus stumbled over his words, turning bright red, this couldn't be happening, this couldn't be real, Sirius wanted to kiss him. Sirius wanted to kiss him??

"I mean Peter probably wouldn't wanna kiss me and James is basically my brother and I'm not kissing some adult so that leaves you’" Sirius said, trying to rationalize why he wanted to kiss Remus, although he didn't particularly care if Remus believed it and just wanted to try and rationalize it to his own mind.

"I mean- do you- I do- do you want to? Kiss me, I mean."

"I mean sure, why not? We're just friends, it wouldn't mean anything." It would mean something to Sirius, although he would never say it out loud out of fear of rejection.

"Yeah, of course, it just kinda confused me with how you said it." It would mean something to Remus too, but he wouldn't say anything now, out of fear that Sirius wouldn't feel the same.

-----

The two slipped away a couple minutes before midnight, leaving James to do the charm by himself so that they could kiss when the fireworks went off at midnight.

They both knew it wouldn't be unsafe to kiss in front of the adults, Remus explained that the Muggle world had much different rules about boys who kissed boys compared to the Wizarding World; which didn't really give a damn about who kissed who, surprisingly.

But they decided that maybe James wouldn't handle it the best and they didn't really want to deal with having to explain the whole tradition thing to James.

So they slipped away.

They would still be able to hear the others from where they were and still be able to see the fireworks. They had chosen a small balcony on the Upper Floor of the Potter Manor: hidden away enough that no one would find them, not too hidden as to completely isolate them.

" Five! " They heard the others begin to chant.

" Four! " They joined the chanting.

" Three! " They stepped closer.

" Two! " Even closer.

" One! " Still even closer.

" Happy New Years!!! " They heard the others shout as they kiss.

It only lasted for a few seconds before Remus quickly pulled away, realizing what he had done.

He was so worried Sirius would look disgusted or upset but he just had a dopey smile.

He let out a little sigh of relief before saying "let's go back to the others before they noticed we were gone."

"Hmm? What?" Sirius asked, seeming a little bit dazed.

"The others? The party? You alright, Sirius?"

Sirius gasped coming back to reality "yep, yeah, let's-let's do that.. sorry I- you're really good at kissing." He said with a small laugh before a walking quickly back to the others.

Leaving Remus little confused until he's quickly remembered that the others are probably look for him and ran after Sirius.
