Chapter Text
Late October, 1976.
Lily couldn’t tell the moment she started hating Dorcas. Neither what made her hate them.
All she knows is that she does. And she has reasons for it.
She hates how they were the only person smart enough to compeat with her. How they attract people, like a magnet, while she keeps struggling to make friends. How they're good at everything, and how she had to try the hardest.
But mostly, Lily hated Dorcas because in her eyes they're the most beautiful person alive. Dorcas was insufferably gorgeous and Lily couldn't stop herself from admiring her beauty. Their friends would probably say that she’s jealous but Lily knows she can appreciate someone's beauty without being so.
Maybe that is the reason why she goes to see every Quidditch practice of the Slytherin team with Pandora. At first it was to support her friend, who had a hopeless crush on the Slytherin keeper, but then time passed, Pandora stopped having a crush on said guy and Lily kept going to every practice so much that it became a habit. She'd sit there with a book in her lap, acting like she didn't pay attention, but in reality she couldn't keep her eyes out of him.
When she realized what she was doing, she started to come up with a new reason to be there: it was for the Gryffindor Quidditch team, she was spying on them to find their weaknesses, that's why she couldn't stop herself from watching Dorcas, as the captain of the team, she was the pillar and if they fall the rest of the team does. But Lily never told James or Marlene a thing. Deep down she knew that the excuse was a lie.
That Thursday wasn't the exception of her observation activities. Lily arrived at the Quidditch pitch and sat on her usual spot. This time she brought one of Remus favorite books, and started reading it while waiting for the practice to start. She was so immersed in her book that she didn't notice Dorcas flying in her broom to reach her spot, until they're right in front of her.
"Enjoying the view, Evans?" Dorcas said, smirking.
"Not much, I have someone blocking it" Lily answered, just as a butterfly passed between them.
“I don’t think that thing is big enough to cover me up”
Lily extended her hand and the butterfly landed on it. “I think you know that this beauty is not what i’m talking about”
“Oh, but you love to see me practice don’t you?” Dorcas teased. "I saw you in every practice we had these past two months, I know i'm irresistible but if you really want a kiss you just have to ask"
Lily laughed. "In your dreams, Meadowes, I actually find the Quidditch pitch quite… comforting” Dorcas was not believing a single word Lily said. “and you know I have two friends in the Gryffindor team, I guess you can say i'm kind of a spy"
"Well you actually failed miserably your job since you already out yourself and let me know your intention"
Lily felt her anger rise. She didn't like to lose, not even in some silly things like this.
“Dorcas, can you stop bickering with every Gryffindor you met and come down here for once?”
Now Dorcas was the angry one, they also couldn’t let themself lose like that. Not in front of Lily.
That brought a smile to Lily's face.
"I guess, we'll see if you’re correct in this year's Gryffindor-Slytherin match” Lily got up and picked up her book. “Until then, Meadowes”
Lily left the pitch. She was not going to give Dorcas the satisfaction of watching their practice.
Dorcas has never really had any problems with Lily.
They’ve been bickering and having a “competition'' for being the best of their classes since they found out they shared the best grades in potions in third year. But besides that Lily never really gave her a reason to hate her.
It’s kind of rough if you think about it, having someone hating you so much, but Dorcas doesn’t care enough to do something about it.
The truth is that they don’t care a lot about their image. You may like them or not, but if you are not one of his friends, you are not worthy of her time. It’s as simple as that.
So she didn’t mind Lily’s spying on Dorcas. Even better, she finds it funny how obvious it is that it’s definitely a lie, and she was only there to watch the practice. She probably has some silly crush on some of their teammates, and finds it too embarrassing to tell anybody. So she’d never tell Dorcas.
After his practice, he and Regulus made his way back to her dorm, where the rest of their friends were waiting for them. Apparently they were in the middle of a discussion.
“I’m just saying that objectively James is pretty fit,'' Barty was saying.
“Yeah, sure but have you seen the way Peter dresses? Like c’mon he has a good taste in clothes that adds like 20 points to attractiveness.”
“I’m sorry, what are we even arguing about?” Dorcas asked.
“About who’s the most attractive guy of the holy quartet”
“And I'm guessing the holy quartet are my brother and his friends,” Regulus said.
“Yes” Pandora, Evan and Barty answered in unison.
“But the lovebirds over there are getting it wrong, I'm sorry Regulus, but attractiveness definitely runs in the Black family” Pandora said.
“I’m too sober for this shit”
“Oh don’t worry about it, Reg'' Dorcas said. “Clearly they’re all wrong and right, because we’re all different people and we all find different things attractive, but i think we can all agree that Remus is the superior one because he’s the only guy i’ll date.”
“Cas, you’re a lesbian”
“As i said, the superior one” Dorcas joked and laughter filled the room. The discusión ended pretty quickly after that, and they started to chat about school, parties, and Pandora’s new crush in the Hufflepuff prefect.
Later that night, when everyone was already in bed, Dorcas' mind started to wonder if Lily will be in their next practice to keep her “spying” plan.
But when the next Thursday came, Lily wasn’t in the bleachers.
‘Pity’ Dorcas thought. ‘Now, who am I going to annoy before practice?’
