Wait, You’re Not Dating?

Summary:

Apparently, the entire school just assumed that Wednesday and Enid were dating but no one bothered to tell them until much later.

Chapter 1: Finding Out

Chapter Text

“Say hi to your girlfriend for me.”

That’s how it started. Enid was already on her way out of Yoko’s room when her friend’s words made her stop dead in her tracks and turn around to glare at her friend in a combination of confusion and annoyance. Yoko just looked back at her, completely unimpressed by her friend’s glare and claws, and raised one eyebrow behind her sunglasses. It was a look she had perfected through years of practice and it always managed to infuriate Enid like few things could. Still, she managed to hold herself together enough to squeeze a reply through her teeth.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about!”

Enid really didn’t mean to snap like that but she was tired and stressed out and something about the way her friend was looking at her just seemed off. Then it clicked. Yoko looked serious, like she had made a completely normal request and not a joke about her friend and whoever her alleged girlfriend was supposed to be. It was all highly confusing, even more so because it wasn’t the first time someone had made a comment like that around Enid. So, she tried to take a few deep breaths and gathered her scattered thoughts just enough to voice her confusion.

“What and who are you even talking about? You know that I don’t have a girlfriend, right?”

Now it was Yoko who was shocked into a momentary silence, although she was much better at hiding it than Enid and much faster at comprehending this new information. When she did, she burst into uncontrollable laughter. She even snorted, which was something she never did unless something truly hilarious and usually humiliating but overall harmless happened to someone around her.

Enid seethed as embarrassment tinted her face red, she hated being laughed at almost as much as she hated not being in on a joke and right now Yoko – who was supposed to be her best friend – was doing both of those things to her at the same time. She was about to either complain or repeat her question – she hadn’t decided yet but opened her mouth anyway, when Yoko, who was leaning against her so she wouldn’t fall over from laughing too hard, calmed down again.

“Wait, so you’re really trying to tell me that you and Wednesday Addams aren’t dating?”

She somehow managed to sound shocked while still giggling occasionally but Enid barely noticed. She didn’t know what answer she had expected but this certainly wasn’t it. Sure, she liked Wednesday a lot but that didn’t mean that her roommate felt the same way. Besides, until now she had been pretty sure she was doing a relatively good job of hiding her affection, as Wednesday would probably call it, but apparently she was wrong about that.

She wondered if that meant that Wednesday had also noticed but quickly convinced herself otherwise. If she had figured it out, she would have done something – most likely gruesome torture followed by a violent murder – about it. Still, she was incredibly smart – even if social situations weren’t exactly her biggest strength – and would find out sooner or later, especially if Enid really was as obvious as she now feared. That would be devastating, potentially even fatal, and Enid was willing to do almost anything to stop it from happening, even if it might be a big blow to her ego.

“What gave you that impression? We’re just friends, maybe barely even that. Did she say something to you? You know I would have told you if something happened between me and her, I probably wouldn’t be able to shut up about it for ages. But don’t tell her I said that! I finally just got on her good side, or at least her not completely terrible side, I guess. Besides, I’m pretty sure she isn’t interested in me like that or in any other way most of the time…”

Yoko almost laughed again but managed to stop herself after looking at Enid’s pleading eyes. Still, she couldn’t help grinning at her friend’s almost pained rambling, showing off pointed teeth. That, of course, just made things worse for Enid who now looked like she was about to pass out. She was still standing, though, so Yoko didn’t feel too bad about teasing her some more.

“Maybe you should tell people that. Pretty much everyone who doesn’t think you have been dating for months has bets going on about how much longer it’s going to take for you to get together. There is always this tension between you and you keep looking at each other. Also, she stares daggers at anyone who dares talk to you and she lets you get way closer to her than anyone else. If I tried to hold her hand like you did yesterday, I would lose that hand. You guys really aren’t being subtle, you even smell like each other.”

Enid was – possibly for the first time in her life – stunned into silence. She had noticed that Wednesday let a lot of things she did slide when she wouldn’t have for other people, of course she did, she wasn’t blind, but that was just because they were friends, right? At least that was what she kept telling herself so she wouldn’t get her hopes up. But maybe it wasn’t just hopeful thinking that Wednesday seemed to be rather close to Enid if so many other people also noticed.

And just like that, Enid couldn’t wait any longer, she needed to know if her roommate felt the same way she did and she needed to know right then. She was aware of the risks – they were why she hadn’t confessed her feelings months ago – but now the hope she had been trying to suppress was back stronger than ever and if she didn’t want to be a coward for the rest of her life she had to act fast, before her bravery left her again.

“I…have to go. Sorry.”

Enid was breathless, nearly shaking from the intense emotions flooding through her, so much so that she barely even felt bad for ditching Yoko hours before she had originally planned on leaving. The vampire didn’t seem to mind either way, she was laughing at her friend again, waving off the tacked-on apology.

“Yes, you do. Now get your girl!”

And with that, Enid was gone, slamming the door behind her and racing through the surprisingly crowded hallways back to her own room where she knew Wednesday would be working on her novel like she did every afternoon.
