Ajax and Lumine had been dating for five months but had been close friends for much longer. They were inseparable and deeply in love. When Ajax had a nightmare, Lumine was always there to comfort him, just like she was this time.
Ajax had always had a bit of trouble sleeping soundly and had a tendency to get bad nightmares. This night, he woke up in fright, having a particularly hard time shaking the dream away. The dream had been so vivid this time--Ajax was terrorised by figures cloaked in darkness and had to run and hide. He wanted to curl in a corner and scream, but the darkness wouldn't quite recede.
Lumine, ever his friend and his fear's greatest enemy, was the one to save him in moments like this. She always knew how to soothe him, how to tell him that everything would be alright, how to take away his terror. And, this time too, even though it was late at night, Lumine was a silent presence, holding Ajax as he shook in her arms.
Lumine had given Ajax another name too, one that she lovingly called him by--the name of Ajax. She said that it suited him greatly, that her lofty Ajax had a heart of gold and the capacity to be a hero just like in their favourite books. It gave a voice to the hero that lay dormant inside of him, the one that fought through the darkness demanding the coward to stay safe.
And It was in the darkness that Ajax needed Lumine the most. No matter how fiercely he wanted to achieve independence, Lumine still felt the need to keep her hero safe. She was always there, singing lullabies and reciting stories of bravery and potential to her sleeping Ajax, every single night. Even in moments when Ajax could hear nothing else, he could always hear Lumine's voice.
As Lumine finished her soothing song and Ajax calmed down, she looked at him tenderly with a hopeful eye, wishing that he would learn to remember his courage and his power the moments someone tried to subdue it. Even in the darkness, Lumine encouraged him to stand up to his fears and let his herculean strength and will power shine through.
The night finally passed and morning came. Lumine still hugged him intertwined in her embrace as the sun rays cast a gentle light on them. As Ajax stirred and glanced at Lumine, he felt a deep sense of love and also gratitude for having her by his side. He knew that Lumine wasn't just some figure of comfort; she was his companion and his protector, ready to running scared with him towards their future and whatever it held.
