Work Text:

With the windows rolled down he could feel the gentle breeze and chilly rain mist. Sammy's pale blue, beat up (well loved as he would say) Ford crawled down the empty back roads. Midnight drives were always his favorite, they were his peace when the world was to loud, but now with Atlas by his side he didn't know if he'd ever be able to enjoy them alone again. A soft tune played on the radio, he glanced over as Atlas started to quietly sing along with it.

"You took all the lonely days and you made them sing," his voice slightly gruff from crying just minutes ago. Sammy's eyes turned back to the road as a soft smile broke out onto his face.

"You turned off all the alarms so they don't ring, I don't know where we are in the grand scheme of thing, but I just want to be hugging you tonight," Atlas's eyes gleamed under passing street lights as they continued on their little adventure.

"Life has thrown away everything that it could throw, your face in the morning it just glows," it was Atlas's turn to look at Sammy as he started to sing, he never heard anything as beautiful as his voice right now, though he might be biased. He barley even noticed when Sammy slowed down the car to a stop at the side of the road, to caught up in staring at him. He only realized when Sammy took his hands off the wheel and turned to him.

"Let's get in this car and face the sky and go, I just want to be counting stars with you," he could tell by the look in his eyes that it was no longer just a song on the radio, it was real for them. "Rap it up and let's go rolling down, there's no funnier duo in this town," it was sung as Atlas slowly pushed a stray blond hair out of his face.

Sammy stared into his eyes, reaching a hand up to slowly cup his face in the truck under the dark sky, "I just wanted say I'm better now and shout it out, I just wanna be hugging you tonight," they sung together as Atlas leaned in first, his hand making it's way to the crook between Sammy's neck and shoulder. Sammy's eyes darted to his lips as he licked his own.

They moved back up the his eyes slowly, now only a breath away from each other, "I don't if you know but I just wanna tell you so. You're the wisest funny one that I will ever know.." he trailed off as he closed the gap, their lips meeting in a slow inexperienced kiss, it was only for a second but for the two it felt like hours. The radio had gone static on their ears as they pulled away to look at each other, and leaned back in for a slightly longer kiss. They held their breaths never wanting the moment to end.

As the pulled away the second time they looked into each others eyes. A smile made it's way on Sammy's face as Atlas chuckled softly.

Becoming more aware of their surroundings Atlas started to sing once more, " I don't know about you, but, oh, I love us as a two."

Sammy picked up after him, "find me a wild road and I'll name it after you.." they slowly sat back into their seats.

After a few short seconds of collecting themselves Sammy turned off the ignition and opened his door, walking to the back of the truck and pulling down the tailgate. Atlas watched him in the rearview mirror in confusion. He slowly stepped out of the truck as well.

"Hey can you grab the bag out of the back please?" Sammy asked as he shuffled around with something in the bed of the old Ford.

He silently obeyed and opened the door again to grab the blue bag, with the logo of the convenience store near his house on the front, out of the back. As he shut the door and walked around he finally saw what Sammy was doing.

The truck bed was covered in pillows and blankets as well as small battery powered fairy light lining the edge of the fluffy covers. It looked like a dream, especially with Sammy standing off the the side look nervous as ever, looking like he was struggling to explain what Atlas was looking at.

Sammy opened and closed his mouth a few times before he was able to start talking in his lovely velvet voice. "I know it doesn't look like much but I just wanted to do something special for you and I can understand if you want to get back in the truck so I can drive you home because it might be a little weird..," Sammy rambled on before Atlas had to step in, setting down the nearly forgotten blue bag on the edge of the tailgate.

"Sammy, shut up.." Atlas said gently, quieting Sammy's rant. Atlas looked away from him and back to the makeshift bed, giving it a few glances he finally looked back to a worried Sammy, "It's beautiful." He murmured, stepping closer to Sammy.

When he was finally close enough he pulled him into a close hug, laying his head on his shoulder. "Umm, the bag. I mean, in the bag, I got your favorite." Sammy looks down as Atlas pulls away, he looked excitedly into the bag to find Reese's pieces and a small bottle of green Gatorade. As well as stuff to make sandwiches. He smiled when he looked back up, pulling Sammy into a even harder hug than earlier. A small mantra of "thank yous' slipped out of Atlas's mouth.

"You did all of this for me? Atlas slowly questioned, looking down into Sammy's eyes.

"Of course." Sammy says bashfully, looking away, "I wanted to show you my safe place, and its here. Where ever you are, under the night sky with no bigger problems than the morning right around the corner." Sammy hands fidgeting around as he continued to explain himself, " and I remember you saying you've never been star gazing before, and I know you get those snack everytime we've studied together.." he continued to ramble. Atlas just stared at him the sky reflecting off his eyes and making them twinkle.

"Then come on," Atlas said impatiently, crawling up into the truck bed, stunning Sammy, making him stop talking as he slowing joined him. Sitting a few feet away from him in his nervousness. "You can come closer, I won't bite, well unless you ask me to," he joked with a smile as Sammy scouted closer. Laying his head on Atlas's shoulder and relaxing.

"Thank you, Sammy" Atlas closed his eyes laying his head on top of Sammy's, "I love it." He whispered as he opened his eyes and looked up at the sky. "I love it so much." He said to a half asleep Sammy. Atlas closed his eyes and soon joined Sammy in his slumber. And planned to deal with the repercussions in the morning when they woke up.
