Mizuki wanted hot chocolate.
Ena didn’t know why they were asking her of all people, considering she hasn’t made hot chocolate since she and Akito were kids, but Mizuki was having a bad day, and Mizuki wanted hot chocolate, so Ena would make it.
She turned back to look at her partner, who was currently sprawled across her couch laughing at videos of cats falling off their play-towers. Ena scoffed (lightheartedly), bad day her ass, Mizuki just didn’t want to make it themself!
…Right? Right. Oh, well. Ena will make it anyway, since she’s so loving.
She scooped out some of the mix from the tin and poured it in the mug for Mizuki. Just as she was about to pour some of the mix into her own mug, a snowball slammed against the window, causing her to spill the mix.
Ena rushed over to the window, yanking it open, and glared at her little brother. “Oi! Keep the snowballs away from the windows! You could break something with that!”
Akito rolled his eyes at her. “Fine, fine! Not my fault my aim missed!”
“How is that anything
but
your fault!” She yelled, but sighed and decided to drop it. “Keep them away from the house! You too, Aoyagi!”
“Ah, sorry. I’ll keep that in mind.” The boy was standing a few feet away from Akito’s side, looking like he was just about to throw a snowball at Akito before Ena addressed him. Darn, she wished she could’ve seen that.
Her brother laughed, mockingly. “Don’t worry, Toya, she’s just trying to make sure her precious girlfriend Mizuki isn’t bothered by us.” Akito stuck his tongue out at her.
Little shit.
“You’re lucky I’m not coming out there! I will shove that snow down your throat, Akito!”
“Try it! I dare you!”
Akito raised a snowball in his right hand just as Ena started to put her leg through the window.
Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately, in Akito’s case), Mizuki was not willing to see a Shinonome Snow Showdown today, and called out to Ena before she could vault out the window.
“Enanan! Can you fight your brother after we have hot chocolate? Pleaseee?” Mizuki was staring right at her, phone laying flat down on their chest. Surprisingly, not on, for once.
Ena flipped off her brother before bringing her leg back inside. “Yeah, yeah, I’ll finish it. Give me a sec.” She slammed the window shut, making sure to lock it so Akito couldn’t antagonize her from outside.
Mizuki beamed upon seeing her reenter. “Thank you, my love! Oh, how cruel of your brother to take you away from me, to leave me starving, cold, and alone. Oh, woe is me!” They grabbed onto Ena’s hand as she passed by.
Snorting, Ena swatted away their hands to get back to their mugs. “Quit it with the cheesy nicknames.”
That seemed to excite Mizuki, somehow. They folded over the back of the couch to keep Ena in their line of sight. “But-! My queen! My beloved! My sweetheart! My babygirl!”
Ena broke out into laughter. “‘Babygirl’? Really? Be a little more creative, will you?” She took the electric kettle off its heating element and poured the water into each of their mugs. Ena opened the drawer in front of her, grabbing a spoon and stirring each drink. “What do you put in your hot chocolate?”
“Cinnamon and milk! It’s really good, Enanan, you should try it!” Mizuki’s voice was muffled from where they were hanging off the couch. From her peripheral, Ena could see them attempt to touch the ground with their hands, before quickly falling off the couch with an ‘oof.’ “Wahhh, Ena!! Come kiss it better!!”
“Absolutely not, come here if you want a kiss.” She grabbed the milk from the fridge, pouring it slowly into the two mugs. Ena added a small amount of cinnamon into each. “Your hot chocolate’s ready, come drink it before it gets cold.”
Mizuki giggled like a little kid. They quickly got up off the floor, and gave Ena a quick kiss on the cheek. “Hehe, thanks Enanan!~”
Ena rolled her eyes once more, ignoring the very red blush on her face. “Yeah, whatever. Don’t drink it too fast, you’ll burn your t--”
“Owie! Ena, I burnt my tongue!”
She looked at Mizuki with wide eyes. Was she cursed with the gift of foresight, or something? “I told you to slow down! Go drink some water to cool your tongue down!”
“Wahhh, Enanan… So mean…” Mizuki whined, but still, they grabbed a cup from the cupboard and quickly filled it with water. They downed it in seconds. “Much better! Now, back to my hot chocolate!”
Ena wondered if a second warning was necessary. Mizuki would surely learn from the first time, right?
“Ouch! Enanannn….!!”
She sighed. Of course they wouldn’t.
“Go drink some more water! And slow down with the hot chocolate this time!”
Akito huffed as Ena slammed the window shut, snow falling off the roof with the force. He turned back to Toya, who was getting dangerously close with a snowball. “Hey. You weren’t about to hit me while I was distracted. Right?”
Toya looked shocked, his eyes widening slightly. “What? No. Akito, I would never. Trust me. Cross my heart. Hope to die.”
They stared at each other for a beat of silence. Then two. Then three. Who was going to break first?
Toya, obviously, considering he started snorting the second he saw Akito’s face. The two of them broke out into laughter, before falling down crouched over in the snow.
“You are
such
a bad liar.” Akito said, struggling to speak in between laughter. Toya put on his best look of faux-offense as he leaned above the ginger. “It’s okay. I’ll teach ya how.”
“Why would I take lying lessons from you ? You’re even worse than me. I can see your lies from a mile away.” Toya had the smallest of smiles on his face as he spoke, and while Akito really just wanted to sit in the snow all day staring at him, he knew he had to get back at his partner for that comment.
Slowly, he packed some snow into a ball where Toya couldn’t see. “Really? Can you see this from a mile away?” Akito threw the snow right at his partner’s face.
Toya looked utterly surprised at the sudden attack, snow covering his whole face as Akito broke out in laughter, clutching his stomach. Quickly, Toya launched a counter-attack by grabbing as much snow as he could and practically shoving it onto Akito’s face.
“Hey! I’m on the ground! Unfair!” Akito was laughing as he pushed snow away from his face. Toya, however, did not care about his boyfriend’s cries of treachery.
“Unfair? You pulled one over on me while I was unaware! I thought we had a truce, Akito.” The boy in question rolled away from Toya’s barrage of snow attacks, packing more ammunition into his hands.
Akito threw a snowball at Toya’s chest in retaliation. “‘Truce’ my ass! We had a small break ‘cause my sister showed up!”
The two of them kept pelting snowballs at the other, neither of them willing to call it quits. At some point, mini snow forts were made, and the multitude of snowball attacks only increased.
As Toya threw more and more snowballs at Akito, he couldn’t stop the grin making its way onto his face. The winters of his childhood were boring, filled with practicing piano or the rare visit to see Saki and Tsukasa. Ever since he met Akito, though, they’ve been a lot more fun.
There are a lot of things he’s grateful to Akito for. Snowball fights just might have to be added to the list.
And, hey, who’s to say Akito doesn’t deserve a few snowballs to the face?
