Work Text:

It was a hot arvo, a light breeze making the leaves on trees along the road sway with it. The radio was on low but was still audible as Mako drove and the A/C blasting to keep the pair cool in the car. The older aussie swiped his tongue over his bottom lip as the man beside him looked up from the book he was reading. Probably motion sick, Mako did warn him about it.

“How much longer, Makooo?” An impatient whine broke the peacefulness of the car. A soft thud followed as Jamie placed the book he had been reading on the ground. Mako glanced over at the smaller man in the passenger seat before looking back at the road, thumbs rubbing over the leather of the steering wheel.

The rat always had an issue with patience, always worse when he had no idea what he was waiting for. But Mako wanted to keep this a surprise, he believed Jamie would love it.

“Not long. Be patient, Jamison.” Mako soon replied as he glanced his eyes up to a sign as he drove by it. Not too far now, he couldn’t wait to see his boyfriend's reaction when they got there. He was surprised that the other hadn’t picked up where they were heading yet.

“How can I be patient if i ain’t even know where we’re goin’?” Jamie questioned as he removed his hands from the dashboard and instead crossed his arms across his chest, cheeks puffing out as he grew more impatient.

“Trust me.” Mako grunted before soon turning into a parking lot, once again glancing over at the younger man who just seemed interested in pouting. But once he pulled into a disabled parking spot, Jamie finally looked to see where they were before his eyes lit up and a gasp left him. Then the rat turned to him and began shaking his arm after grabbing it.

“Holy shit! Dreamworld? Awesome!” Jamie laughed as he looked back out the window. Mako smiled softly before grabbing the disabled parking permit from the glove box and placed it on the dashboard of where Jamie was, glancing at him before undoing his seatbelt.

“Put your leg on and let's go.” Mako told the younger one as he opened the car door and stepped out. Jamie had taken it off sometime during the drive, complaining about it being uncomfortable while in a car. While Jamie did that, Mako moved his way to the boot after closing his door and opened it, grabbing the backpack that held the basic things like their bottles of water, swimmers, towels, Jamie’s headphones and a change of clothes.

The Aussie slipped one of the straps over his shoulder before glancing to the left of him when he heard footsteps heading directly towards him. He stood up straighter, turning towards the person when they stopped beside him and cleared their throat. Mako stared down at the woman, her arms crossed over her chest and a glare on her face.

“You can’t park here, sir.” She started off with a passive-aggressive tone that Mako knew all too well. His gaze flickered over her face as he pressed his lips into a fine line. As fine as it could get with his ‘tusks’ in a way.

“I can.” Mako simply responded to her, not really wanting to get into an argument. This was a day for Jamie, he didn’t want to spoil his own mood because of this woman.

“This is a disabled parking spot and you look like there's nothing wrong with you. Other than being obese, which doesn’t count as being disabled.” The woman replied as she pointed at the hog, his eyebrows furrowing as he gripped the strap of the bag tighter, growing more fed up with this woman.

It didn’t help that people nearby were watching this now, seeing as they were close to the entrance of the theme park.

“So you’re gonna have to move your car for someone who may actually need it.” the karen added on after a beat of silence, a sly grin forming on her face as Mako continued to stare at the woman.

“Listen, ma’am, you clearly ain’t need it. I’m parking here.” Mako told her more firmly to try and end the conversation, but knew better to keep his tone soft. The Maori could be seen as ‘scary’ in people's eyes still and he didn’t want to be kicked off the property of DreamWorld before they actually entered it.

“Do not ma’am me, I’m not that old! Now you need to move this car for someone who actually needs it!” She snarled as she continued on the interaction as Mako took note of the way she poked her finger against his chest. He allowed her, not making any movements to push it away, instead he just sighed and glanced into the boot of the car then back at the woman.

“I’m no-”

“Got a prob’em, Mako?” Jamie’s voice cut him off as he rounded the car, having just finished putting his prosthetic on as it decided to not wanna go on straight away. Mako glanced down at the shorter man as he stood beside the other one, staring at the woman now with eyes that just read ‘try me’.

The woman turned her attention to Jamie and was about to get started on him before noticing the prosthetics, her grin falling as her eyes widened slightly.

“Yeah, still got a prob’em with us parkin’ here?” Jamie questioned as he stared at her still as he crossed his arms over his chest, standing up straighter as the woman stammered to come up with a reply. Mako smiled slightly at this as he looked back over at the woman.

“No, I’m sorry for disturbing you ‘bout it.” The woman soon found her words before scurrying away towards her car, embarrassment clear in the way she hung her head. Mako shook his head slightly before looking down at Jamie properly.

“Ain’t ever had a prob’em with someon’ like that, have ya?” Jamie asked as he watched Mako grab out his swim leg and arm before shutting the boot. The older one held out his swim prosthetics towards the one who actually needed them and shook his head.

“Nah.”

“Proof we just deep in city licker territory now aye?” Jamie questioned with a grin, giggling as he grabbed the limbs and held them as they made their way to ticket stands after Mako locked the car doors.

“Yep.” He replied as he adjusted the strap of the bag on his shoulder then grabbed his boyfriend's hand.

“Totally shoulda just thrown me arm at her. Would’ve been so funny.”

“Would’ve gotten arrested.” Mako told him as he shook his head, smiling slightly as he glanced down at Jamie.

“Eh, oh well. Woulda been still funny as.” Jamie snickered as he looked up at the other, grinning happily.

“Yeah. Would’ve been.”
