Summary
Vague-edged and shadow-cast against the pale ice of the lake’s far bank stand a wolf and a buck. Skirting the frozen water’s edge they circle one another — not in the pursuit of predator and prey, but an eclipsing dance of equal footing — before coming to a standstill as if preparing to duel, the pinprick black of them like staring down the muzzle of a gun. At this distance, their eyes are lost in their shaded forms, but something glints in the lens, and Arthur gets a strange feeling in the hair on the back of his neck that he’s being watched.
Later, Arthur will remember the buck and the wolf on the lake’s shore, and let himself hope.
