Chapter 1: the beginning

Chapter Text

Frisk awoke, a pounding thump in their head rendering all other senses useless. As they slowly shook off the pain, forcing their remaining senses to awake, they quickly managed to survey their surroundings; the room was overwhelmingly large yet underwhelmingly plain, it was more of a large white box than a room, lined with a single grey door along its north wall. As frisk rubbed their eyes they realised they weren't alone; standing tall, hand on her hips, a stressed expression masking her face, Toriel paced the room back and forth so quickly she could've caused a dent in the floor. Sans and his comically larger brother Papyrus sat against a wall, leaning into each other in a brotherly cuddle as they dozed oblivious to the predicament they were in. Alphys sat nervously by her heavy sleeping girlfriend, as she anxiously watched Toriel angrily stop back and forth in the room, Undyne, completely unfazed, slept face down spread out in a warm puddle of drool she had been accumulating. Asgore, however, was inspecting the long rectangular walls repeatedly to the point Frisk realised he, in fact, was not doing anything but trying stay out the way of Toriel's reign.

It took a while for everyone to wake up but it was decided by the group (Toriel) that everyone should have a say before any decisions are made. Everyone, of course, tried the door and...no luck. Frustrated, Undyne kicked the door, suddenly the door handle snapped off and made a loud CLANK onto the cold floor. Everyone stood there, wide-eyed, just staring.

"well, lets just hope we don't find the key huh?" Asgore awkwardly joked, no one laughed except for sans whose low snicker rang throughout the room.

Toriel simply grabbed her face and threw her body into a full 360 to continue her pacing. Asgore considered turning to comfort her but selfishly decided her snapping at him wouldn't be worth it, sans had headed towards her anyway, it was probably for the best as they still weren't on the greatest terms.

"w-what do we d-do then?" Alphys squeaked, desperate for some guidance.

She soon regretted her question though as this was the trigger that finally set the panic into the entire group, noise erupted throughout the monsters as they desperately tried to get some sort of plan together. The noise became too much to cope with and Frisk soon escaped back to the door, as far away from the rioting crowd as they could be. Throwing their body down they sat grumpily, head down, hands over their ears. However, while sat down their eyes darted to the door handle left untouched on the floor. Something wasn't right... door handles don't usually have weird white things sticking out the end? Frisk's curiosity got the better of them and they grabbed the handle, pulling out the strange white shape.

A note!!

Frisk, proud of their detective abilities, spun themselves around running back to the group. The scene had changed now, sans had lazily slumped himself into the far right corner, Papyrus and Undyne had separated from the group and were gathering as many magical spears and bones as they could- obviously discussing some violent escape plan, and Toriel had managed a calm conversation with both Asgore and Alphys. All attention drew to Frisk, however, the moment they began wildly flailing the note in their hands.

"huh? you got something for us Frisk?" Undyne questioned already taking the note from their hand.

It wasn't as satisfying as anyone had hoped though as the note consisted purely of random dots.

"Anything helpful?" Toriel begged, already telling from Undyne's face that it wasn't.

"Nah, just a bunch of random dots, weird," Undyne replied letting her confusion get the better of her.

"RANDOM DOTS?" Papyrus repeated,

He turned to sans and soon noticed the mention drew his attention. Undyne lowered the note to show Alphys and was soon pleased to hear her response.

"oh! I-I know what t-this is!" she exclaimed "it's morse code I'm pretty sure!"

"do you know how to read it?" Asgore pried.

The nervous/guilty face she pulled told everyone what they needed. Back to square one they thought.

"Let's see then," sans said appearing in front of Undyne suspiciously fast.

He didn't wait for her response and instead grabbed it from her hands. Everyone stood still for a moment as he carefully inspected the note, showing no change on his face.

"it's a code," he said plainly.

"code? what for?" Toriel questioned, causing everyone to look around them.

"dunno," sans retorted rather unhelpfully.

" d-do you know what the c-code is?" Alphys tried to press.

"yep," he replied. " 2 7 4 4"

Sans nonchalantly threw the paper onto the floor. Papyrus turned to him to try and ask more but when he did he was gone, instead sans was cramped up into the corner again settling down for a nap.

"SANS, YOU'RE NOT BEING VERY HELPFUL!" Papyrus protested

"waddya mean? just did a whole code for you guys," he announced drawing out the word whole like it had been very difficult for him, "it really leaves a guy... bone- tired"

Toriel cackled from the other side of the room, and papyrus had a grin that covered his entire face. Sans, satisfied with this reaction, settled down and dozed off.
