Work Text:
Kon flew to the now abandoned Cave, the path all too familiar considering it had been years since the Cave had been their headquarters. But today was a special day. It was the end of the year, and Kon was taking the time to celebrate with his best friends, Tim and Bart. Without them, he would not have been part of a super team, and he would not have grown into the person he was now. He entered the abandoned room, the machinery oddly intact while the rest of the area had been destroyed. This had once been the Justice League Headquarters, until it caved in, then Kon, Bart, and Tim had found it and chosen it as their first ever headquarters. Back then, they had decided to call themselves Young Just Us. Kind of a funny name, now that he thought about it. ‘Just Us’ hardly left any room for new friends, or for a change in those already on the team. They didn’t always think things through then, but they were also younger, newer to working with others outside of their little hero families. Kon had remembered being jealous of the others for a while. They had families to go home to; families who actually cared where they were or what happened to them. But now, Kon realised, he had a family of his own, and his teammates had been the start of it all. A rush of air and a flash of light alerted Kon that he was no longer alone.
“Hey Bart!” He called out, as Bart froze behind him.
“Awww I was gonna surprise you! How’d you know it was me?” Bart practically pouted, which Kon thought was adorable.
“Superspeed isn’t that subtle to someone with super senses.” Kon countered, booping Bart on the nose as a movement in the shadows caught his attention. There, emerging from the pitch black darkness with all the grace and silence of his mentor, was Tim.
“Glad to see you both made it.” Tim said.
“Wouldn’t miss it for the world!” Kon smiled. He really wouldn’t. These were his best friends, heck, his family! He could never see himself missing out on a meeting with them, no matter what may try to keep him away. He watched as Tim settled on top of a bit of crumbled wall, sitting as comfortably as he could, and Bart chose a bit of broken machinery to fiddle with, before trying to find his own bit of crumbled room to sit on. Sure, it wasn’t too terribly comfortable, but that wasn’t going to ruin Kon’s mood.
“Another new year, eh?” Tim muttered. “It seems like just last week we were here to celebrate the New Year together.”
“Time really does fly.” Kon agreed.
“Maybe for you! Time is way too slow if you ask me!” Bart chimed in.
“Just because you get frustrated with lights coming on or the number of hours in a day, doesn’t mean time is too slow!” Kon retorted with a laugh. They had this conversation every year, and yet, somehow, Kon never tired of it. It was like a tradition. Tim would be amazed at how quickly time moved, Bart would complain about everything being too slow, and Kon would get the chance to laugh and relax.
“Do you think next year will be as great as this year was?” He asked, his voice surprisingly small.
“Of course!” Bart cheered. “We’re all still together, so how could it not be amazing?”
“Exactly,” Tim nodded, “As long as we have each other, any year will be spectacular.”
“You two are so cheesy!” Kon laughed, using his Tactile Telekinesis to draw them from their seats into his open arms. “I love you guys.” The group embraced the hug, yet another tradition, and turned to watch the clock together. They waited in silence, watching the seconds tick down. Well, Kon and Tim waited in silence. Bart, ever active, had taken to running about the room at super speed, while chattering about all the things he wanted to do in the new year. Not that Kon or Tim could really hear him, since he was speaking at the same speed he was moving, but they knew more or less what was being said. It happened every year. Bart would get board and race off and chat, while Tim and Kon would relax, always leaned up against one another, sometimes in a hug, and watch the clock. As the clock reached the final ten seconds, Bart stopped his racing and joined Kon and Tim, returning to the hug just in time to count down. As always, they alternated numbers.
“Ten.” Kon started.
“Nine.” Tim continued.
“Eight!” Bart shouted.
“Seven.”
“Six.”
“Five!”
“Four.”
“Three.”
“Two!”
“One!” They finished together. “Happy New Year!” With a small cheer, and a hug as tight as Kon could manage, he rang in another new year with the best friends he could ever imagine having. He was so lucky. He hoped that this year they would have even more moments like this; quiet moments for just the three of them. But for now, he would revel in this one moment of pure, unbridled love.
