Work Text:

The troll entered the room, letting out a roar as it burst through the doors. You took a step back and Boromir took a step to his right so he was standing directly in front of you. A wave of frustration washed over you, you weren't a fragile girl that needed protection, but it quickly died down when the troll took a step closer. But you had to admit, the troll was huge. It could probably break your bones without a slap of its hand, so it was actually preferable to have him so close to you and standing between you and the creature.

The troll stomped to attack Sam, who dove out of the way of the beast's weapon, jumping under it to avoid being crushed by the weapon. It went after the hobbit, lifting its leg to crush him, but you grabbed the chain with the men of the fellowship and pulled, forcing it backward and away from the hobbit. The troll turned around and flailed the rope, which was still in Boromir's hand, around, making him smash into a wall. You let a concerned squeak and hurried to him, slashing down the few orcs that got in your way. A blade flew past you and embedded into the orc that had been threatening Boromir's life, and you shoved the body aside before it could fall down, extending a hand to Boromir while swinging your sword in the other, bringing down yet another orc.

When he got up, he pulled you close to his chest and finished the three orcs that lurked close with a few blows of his sword.
"You know, I am perfectly capable of defending myself." You remarked, and he gave you a smirk before connecting your lips with his. The kiss was barely there, it was quick and hurried but it still filled your stomach with a fluttering warm feeling.
"I know." He whispered to you, keeping his eyes on the enemies that might head your way but managed to give you a small glance.
"Stay close," Boromir whispered again, his arm brushing against yours, and you gave him a small smile.

You strung an arrow to your bow and waited for the right time to attack. You let the arrow loose and hit the troll straight in the arm, but it only seemed to annoy the troll rather than do any actual damage. The troll was swinging the chain that was around its neck around, having lost its weapon, but luckily only managed to hit the few remaining orcs that were still in the room. The rest of the fellowship was pelting the troll's hide with blows, but nothing seemed to do any damage. You let loose arrow after arrow, aiming for the hands, head, legs, or anything you could do to slow it down and incapacitate it. But the hide of the beast was too tough, no weapon could pierce it.

Pippin somehow ended up on the troll's back, and after a little bit of fumbling, managed to stab it in the head with it, making the troll roar in anger, mouth gaping wide open. Legolas took the opportunity and shot an arrow straight into the gaping mouth, making the troll sway. Boromir pulled you back against him as the beast took a few staggering steps around, still on its feet somehow. You nearly jumped into Boromir's lap when the troll collapsed with a ground-shaking 'thud'.

You were swinging your sword around as the enemies just kept coming, trying to keep them away from Merry and Pippin. Boromir was fighting to your left, blocking and slicing and killing with every swing, but the orcs just kept coming. You brought down yet another as Merry and Pippin managed to kill one, fighting alongside one another. You were starting to get overwhelmed, the orcs attaching you didn't seem to end and when you managed to glance up between the lashes you dealt out with your sword, there were even more coming. Boromir blew his horn, hoping that the rest of the fellowship would come to your aid.

The army of orcs that came running down the mountain seemed like it would never end.
"RUN!" You yelled at the hobbits as you were forced to back down under the sheer amount of foes attacking you. You glanced at Boromir and to your horror, you as an orc shot an arrow into Boromir's chest, making you let out a shriek as the arrow sunk in. You brought down another orc with a swing, trying to make your way to Boromir, who was still fighting, even with the arrow in his flesh. A blade tore into your leg, but you barely noticed it. You were determined, you had to get to Boromir.

When you noticed the orc aiming another arrow right at Boromir's chest, it felt like your heart stopped for a moment and you sprung into action.
"NO! Run! Run!" You yelled at the hobbits as you sprinted toward the orc. Without thinking, you jumped into the orc's back, trying to distract it. Your plan worked, the arrow didn't hit his chest, but it hit him in the leg, making him fall to his knees with a pained shout. And the orc got a hold of your leg easily and swung you off its back and sent you flying into a tree. The impact made pain shoot through your body, and you let out a wavering gasp as your vision went black.

When you came to, the orcs had grabbed Merry and Pippin, and Boromir was trying to get to his feet, but the arrow in his leg, right above the knee made it impossible. You tried to get up, but pain shot through your entire body, your breath hitching as the edges of your vision got covered in black. Your ears felt stuffed, a humming noise filling them as the pain assaulted you. You closed your eyes, trying to focus on your breathing as the pain continued to flow through you.
"I cannot die now. I cannot die now." You kept repeating the sentence in your head over and over as you forced yourself to take breath after breath, even if it hurt.

A gentle pair of hands picked you up from the ground and heaved you into their lap from cold ground. You had no idea how long you had been laying with your eyes closed.
"Y/N?" Boromir's voice was shaking as he lifted you into a better position in his lap, his hand templing as it traced your neck. You opened your eyes just a smidge to see him sitting above you and saw a look of relief wash over his face. He lifted you into a sitting position, and you hissed as the pain shot through your back again, but it was lesser now. Your eyes landed on the arrow in his chest, and your breath hitched.
"B-Boromir." He pressed his forehead against yours, shushing you gently, promising, swearing to you that the injury wasn't fatal.
"The hobbits..." Your voice trailed off as he shook his head with a solemn voice.
"I- I couldn't follow them. I tried, Eru knows how I tried but I couldn't. They are gone and I couldn't help-"You lifted your hand to his cheek turning him to face you as his words started to get frantic.
"It is not your fault."
"It is! I should have done more, I should have tried harder, I should have-" You cut off his rambling with a gentle touch of your lips. He stilled as you pulled back but wrapped his arms around you and brought you to him to meet your lips in another kiss.

"How long has this been going on?" Aragorn's stunned voice sounded from above, and you pulled away from each other, a slight blush appearing on your cheeks as Boromir grinned.
"Since the mines of Moria." The three fighters gaped at the two of you for a moment and were only brought out of their trance when you shifted in Boromir's lap and winced in pain as your ribs throbbed. Boromir soothed your side with his fingers, and the pain quickly went away.
"They took the little ones," Boromir muttered, and Aragorn nodded, stepping away to speak to Gimli and Legolas for a while.
"We'll get them back." You tucked your head under him, leaning against his chest. He only hummed, bringing his arms around you yet again gently, not wanting to cause you pain.
