The new year is supposed to herald a new you, so Hermione decides one of her New Year’s goal is to get into baking. And who better to teach her than Harry?

“Mind you, I’m not bad at this,” Hermione says a tad defensively, as she mixes together purple icing as if she’s concocting a difficult brew in Potions Class. “I can follow instructions just fine. It’s the creativity part that gets me. I want to be a fun mom, you know? All the parenting books nowadays say kids like fun moms.”

Harry looks over at her exasperatedly from where he’s kneading dough. “Hermione, the baby will not think you’re not a fun mom just because you’re bad at designing cookies.”

“Easy for you to say!” Hermione scoffs and points towards the table where two utterly adorable frosted cookies of Hedwig and Crookshanks sit. “Yours look perfect! Mine was so horrible I had to cover it up.”

“Horrible,” Winky’s voice laments behind them. “A horrible, horrible mess. Why oh why won’t they let Winky do the cooking?”

“Winky must resist!” Dobby tries to lead her away, even as Winky laments over the absolute war zone the kitchen has become without her presence.

Kreacher sits mulling over his thoughts in a corner of the kitchen, still wearing the hat Hermione had gifted him almost a week ago. Surprisingly, the state of the kitchen is not his biggest concern. “Kreacher must burn those bad parenting books. Filling their head with nonsense, it is. Fun, they say, Bah!”

“See, even Kreacher thinks you need to stop worrying,” Harry jokes and reaches out to wipe away stray flour on her clothing.

“Do you think we’ll be good parents, Kreacher?” Hermione asks him curiously.

The house elf sighs. “The very worst.”

Both Harry and Hermione laugh. In Kreacher talk, that is probably the most reassuring thing they could get.
