Keeping Order

Summary:

Meet Tracy Marshal, a most unusual magical girl with a police thematic yet lacking compliance with authorities - she is unregistered. While those in charge would consider her a loose cannon, she just wants to be left alone to do her job - fighting monsters. Join her for one night as she patrols the streets of the City, busting ne'er do wells.

Chapter 1: Cookie Cutter Enemy

Chapter Text

The night was dark and rainy, and the barrier that fell upon the City was a deep, teal color. Most monsters did not pay any mind to the rainfall, but there was one that was definitely not amused by it. Mad Baker, a small pudgy humanoid monster with a body that looked like it was made of raw dough. Its evil mustache and the chef's hat that it wore were also likely raw dough, but the massive chocolate chip cookie that it brandished was not. It was a fully baked cookie that it could throw like a Frisbee which exploded upon impact, and the chocolate chips would fly in all directions like delicious but deadly shrapnel. However, the rain made it soggy and heavy, and thus it was likely going to be ineffective as a weapon.

The monster knew this, and considered discarding the explosive snack when it noticed red and blue flashing lights approaching from the distance. Focusing its beady little eyes, it saw what appeared to be a magical girl dressed in a blue uniform wearing a cap adorned with a domed light that alternated between red and blue. She was riding on a small rectangular metal box with wheels and a single seat.

It was none other than Tracy Marshal, Magical Girl Order Keeper (though she never registered, so she formally did not bear that title). Her outfit was a dark blue police uniform with an eight point police hat, and while the City had its own police force, nobody could identify the vehicle she was riding (since their cops only had bicycles). It was a box-bodied police car like they had in the old world, though hers was much smaller, and pedal-powered (but with some magic making it go faster than it really should.)

Tracy turned the steering wheel, making the tiny police car slide sideways to a full stop, before standing up in the seat before pointing her truncheon at the malicious dough brand mascot.

“Put that cookie down! NOW!!!“

The Mad Baker did not comply with the request. It just glared back at her, with an unrelenting malicious grin plastered over its face, before spinning aground and throwing the baked snack. But as expected, the rainwater made it too heavy to fly, and also lose structural integrity, as it fell down onto the pavement and splattered all over it, not exploding, just fizzing away pathetically.

Tracy narrowed her red and blue heterochromous eyes as an another, this time fresh and still crispy cookie materialized in the Mad Baker's hand. "You've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk? She said as it prepared to toss the baked explosive again.

Most likely it was feeling lucky as it did did spin around and let go of the chocolate chip cluster bomb, and this time it took flight successfully, spinning right towards Tracy's head. Unfazed, she dove forward, and the evil snack Frisbee missed her by a hair before flying off into the distance and landing directly in a puddle that once again disabled it. But this time the Mad Baker did not have time to conjure a new one, as Tracy quickly dashed towards it, her nightstick primed and ready.

“Your move, creep!” she shouted as as she did an overhead swing with the baton and struck the Mad Baker right between the eyes, making them bulge even further out of its chubby head. Its evil mustache curled from the impact and the monster fell on its back, completely stunned. As its doughy chef's hat rolled into a puddle, Tracy pulled out a pair of handcuffs and put them on the monster's wrists (or whatever counted as them) then simply turned around and headed back towards her pedal cruiser.

That was her power as a magical girl. She could not actually harm the monsters, but she had the most effective stun attack with her baton, one that would knock out even the biggest and baddest monsters. She then had an infinitely re-spawning supply of magical handcuffs that, when placed on a monster's limbs, would keep it immobilized for the rest of the night, and then the barrier rest would destroy it, or some other magical girls would find them, and in that case they would be easy pickings.

Order Keeper always operated solo. She in fact, really disliked human company, and preferred the company of animals. Orphaned at young age, she was taken care of by her uncle, who was a farmer in the South End, the more agriculturally focused part of the City. He took care of her the best he could, but was very busy with farmwork, and so she spent most of her free time helping him out. It was hard and lonely work, but as a heavily introverted type, she really enjoyed the solitude it brings.
She also enjoyed cheesy action movies. So cheesy in fact, that her uncle once said “ Heck, if we could materialize the cheesiness of those flicks, we would have enough cheese to supply the entire city with for three flippin' years, gash dangit.” Those movies were probably the reason behind her cop theming, and her penchant for one-liners.

Still, why would a magical girl whose costume and powers are taking after a figure of authority not be registered? The answer lies in her strong dislike of people. “I don't want to register, Uncle Bob. Those pencil pushers talk a lot, and ask lots of questions. They want you to go to their fancy schools and join up with other girls. I don't like that, I work alone. And I don't want anyone telling me how I should work, or any media watching me, or anything. I just want to go out there and prevent monsters from breaking into people's homes, is all.” she told her uncle after getting the dream, and as he himself had a great distrust for the bureaucrats, he agreed to let her do her thing. And so she would wear a wig and contact lenses to conceal her identity during the day, and during the night she exclusively operated in less areas that did not see many patrols.

And there she was now, settling back into the seat of her cruiser. On board she had a small radio, that served as a replacement for her incredibly poor monster detection sense by telling her approximate location of nearby monsters. It crackled to life immediately as her feet were on the pedals and an ethereal, feminine voice came speaking from it.

“All units, we have reports of attempted breaking and entering on the corner of Cornbread Row and Wheat Avenue. Three suspects involved. All nearby units please proceed to the destination, over.”

“Dispatch, I'm on it.” Tracy responded. The domed light on her cap begun flashing again and she started pedaling, but when passing by the handcuffed Mad Baker, she paused and leaned out of the car to deliver a final one liner to it. “Let me guess, someone stole your sweet roll!” she said in a mocking tone before putting on a pair of mirrored aviator shades and speeding off, red and blue flashes fading into the distance. The Mad Baker just muttered something unintelligible as it remained immobile, bound by the magical cuffs.

But there was something else out there, in the shadows. Something that has been following her for a while now. A monster that was near impossible to detect even for magical girls with the strongest sense, and would always keep its distance, biding its time and waiting for the best opportunity to strike, usually at the end of patrol hours as that was wen magical girls would be most exhausted and vulnerable. That time was not yet, and so it kept on skittering after her, unheard and unseen...
