The farmer wakes up, and then continues to lie there. Usually he'd get up first thing and go outside; tap the sprinkles and water the tea leaves. He'd peek into the bat cave and collect the literal fruits of nature's labour after he filled the dog's bowl, and then go and check for eggs. Usually by the time he's getting back around the house, Harvey has risen and started a pot of something hot, mugs waiting on the counter for them both when the farmer comes in with the sun on his back. They smile, they wake slowly, and through the window the scent of petrichor rises.
Not today, it seems.
