Of the past and friendships.

Summary:

Grian is, well, no way of putting this nicely, he’s old. Not in the sense that he’s wise, or in the sense that he’s lived a long life. None of that. Grian’s old because his soul has existed for centuries upon centuries. Grian has seen a lot, though, that has not made him wise. After all, if wisdom is gained via life experience, then Grian only had about twenty years worth of wisdom.

——————

Or: Prequel/companion piece to Ghosts and Vigilantes. You don’t technically need to read that to understand whats going on, but it is recommended

Notes:

Prequel for this au which needs a name! Theres still more to come, but this is the end of the desert duo focused fics in this au.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Grian is, well, no way of putting this nicely, he’s old. Not in the sense that he’s wise, or in the sense that he’s lived a long life. None of that. Grian’s old because his soul has existed for centuries upon centuries. Grian has seen a lot, though, that has not made him wise. After all, if wisdom is gained via life experience, then Grian only had about twenty years worth of wisdom.

A lot had changed since Grian’s death, the most notable (at least from what he could tell, being unable to interact with the world) was the large metal forest that were modern cities, and the advent of Superheroes.

Of course superheroes as a concept weren’t a new thing, powers had existed since the great plague, that had set those still alive back a century in terms of technology, thus the gods granted everyone powers, that ended up becoming a permanent fact of life for the years after.

But that’s not the point, the point is how after literal centuries of loneliness an up and coming vigilante started to call on the ghosts that lived in the city that Grian had been floating through, and he couldn’t miss a chance like this.

Scar wasn’t the most popular, far from it. He was loud and impulsive, which was not the best thing due to his job working at the local bookstore. Bookstores typically had a lot in common, namely that most people there preferred quiet and calmness, both of which Scar was not.

Another thing that made Scar unpopular among his coworkers was his power, he could talk to ghosts. A rare power to have on its own, and a secondary ability that comes with necromancy based powers, which were incredibly rare powers in its own right. So his coworkers weren’t exactly likely to believe him when he explained that his tendency to talk to air in the middle of his shift was due to his abilities. Most of them, namely those who had grown tired of Scar’s antics were ready to write him off as the local crazy person.

The rest of them were ready to write Scar off as childish when Scar talked about his dreams of one day being a hero. Heroes were a class all of their own, being the only ones allowed to openly use more dangerous abilities in public to stop the pursuit of evil. Only the best of the best were given the opportunity to even attempt to be heroes. Most official heroes had skill enhancing powers, or powers that could be used offensively. The main exception being Zombie, whose powers were unknown. And Scar was… well he was loud, easily excited, and the local crazy person Scar.

But Scar was going to be a hero regardless. Maybe his way of going about it was a bit less than legal, but with vigilantism on the rise in Boatem especially in poorer districts, many of which were ignored by the hero tower.

But despite all that here Scar was, standing on top of his apartment building, ready to make his debut as only the hottest vigilante, Hotguy. He had practiced his archery, and had hand stitched his costume.

“Alright ghosts of the city, let's do this,” He called out, hoping a ghost should hear, as he began hopping from building to building looking for crime to stop. It didn’t take long to find a villain. The villain was Redstoner, a newer villain that had quickly grown in infamy.

Sadly Scar got pretty beat up without anyone to help, and the fact that he had a total of zero experience in combat, he only knew how to shoot arrows good. Barely managing to get away, Scar limped back to his apartment.

“That was pretty cool, if you didn’t get that close you probably would’ve won the fight,” an unfamiliar voice said, causing Scar to jump, as he quickly looked around, his eyes landing on a ghost who had large wings on his back.

“Don’t scare people like that!” Scar yelped.

“Sorry, haven’t really talked to people in awhile,” the ghost laughed, “I’m Grian.”

“Scar,” Scar replied happily.

And with that a long lasting friendship had formed.
