A pregnant Lucy was adamant that the baby’s name be special or uncommon. She took popular names off the table immediately, not wanting something for their child that many other children had. “We’re not going full celebrity or anything but our kid deserves an awesome, slightly unpopular name,” she explained to Tim.
Tim eyed his wife. “You’re adamant about this, huh? Nothing that’s a dime a dozen around here.”
“Exactly!” Triumphant, Lucy smiled at him and then briefly kissed Tim before she started scrolling through a baby names site once again.
He could only shake his head before he left her sitting at her desk so he could go on patrol. Tim completely understood why Lucy wanted an unusual (but not too out there) name for the baby, and he was willing to listen to some of her ideas. Fortunately, they both had veto power, which seemed to be working out well so far. Neither of them could wait to meet this tiny little life they had created.
When he got back to the station after patrol was over, he found John talking to Lucy. “You could name the baby Johanna if it’s a girl. Or Nolan? John?” John tried.
“We are not naming the baby after you! Besides, that’d be weird anyway,” an amused and laughing Lucy pointed out to him.
John paused for a second. “Fair. But we will help you with the name!” he called as he headed out the door to leave.
“You can try!” Lucy shot back.
“Everyone and their mother still suggesting names?” Tim laughed and splayed a hand across Lucy’s stomach, grinning when the baby kicked.
“Of course. And nobody’s suggesting anything that fits my criteria either, which is just rude. They could at least be helpful!”
“Noted.” Tim kissed her, and then the two of them headed home to relax for the rest of the night. “We could name the baby after a book character?” he suggested once they were in bed.
Lucy pondered the idea for a second before nodding. “Possibly. God, naming kids is hard. How does anybody do this more than once? How does anyone agree? There’s too many choices!” she complained.
“We’ll figure something out - don’t worry about it.” They still had plenty of time to come up with a name. “Maybe we can wait to meet them before we settle on a name. That might be easier once we know the baby?”
She blew out a breath. “Maybe.” Might make this whole thing easier once they had an actual little baby with a personality.
And at least they still had a month and a half left to go before the baby was born.
When the baby finally did arrive - a week late - on a cold January morning, Lucy knew immediately what she needed to name their daughter. It wasn’t even that hard talking Tim into it, considering he hadn’t been able to come up with anything either. January Briar Bradford was the most beautiful thing they laid eyes on, and a perfect mix of both of them.
