Chapter 1: a Winter storm

Chapter Text

Winter sat looking up at the stars. Many people had told her in her life that stars grant wishes but if that was true she wouldn't be here sitting on the outside porch of a girls foster home.

“Winter you need to come inside. It's getting late and the Healer parents are coming to see you tomorrow.” Winter's ears perked up at that, she had forgotten about the family that for some reason had thought she would be a good fit for their family. There were plenty of other children here who were younger and had less issues. She knew a lot about the Healers there was Chilli the mom Bandit the dad and Bluey and Bingo their two daughters. Bluey was 7 and Bingo was 5. Winter couldn't figure out why they would possibly want to add a traumatized 15 year old to the mix but maybe tomorrow she would know. Though they still hadn't decided for sure so that was one of the reasons they were coming to see her tomorrow.

“Alright I’m coming” she said and stood up to follow Ms.Lola inside. When she got to her room she lay down on her bed and fell asleep.

“Winter come on the Healers are here.” Ms.Lola said trying to get Winter out from where she had hid herself behind a shelf. Winter had a tendency to hide and run away when she was scared but today she had chosen a spot easy to find because she wasn't sure yet if she was too scared to meet the Healers. What if they didn't like her and left her to stay here until she turned 18, which was only 3 years away. “Winter they'll love you, you're a great girl and just because you are struggling doesn't mean they won't love you. They both know what your going through but they said they wanted to meet you anyway so come on let's get you out of here. Winter looked up to Ms.Lola and she had one more concern.

“But i'm not a little girl anymore and-”

“Shush.” Ms.Lola cut her off. “They aren't looking for a little girl. They're looking for you.” she said and helped Winter up. Carefully hiding her to the front where the Healers were. “Ms. and Mr.Heeler this is Winter. Ms.Lola carefully urged Winter to step in front of her. Winter obliged and gave the Heelers a small smile to which they returned.

“Hello Winter I’m Chilli and this is Bandit. We're both really excited to meet you.” Chilli spoke softly but not in a way that made Winter feel like she was a child. She nodded.

“I was thinking that we could go out to lunch and you two could get to know Winter better.” Ms.Lola said a bright smile crossing her lips.

“That sounds lovely.” Ms.Heeler said before turning to face Winter. “What do you think? Do you want to go out to lunch?” she asked.

“Lunch would be nice Ms.Heeler.” she said with a slight nod.

“Oh please just call me Chilli.” Ms.He- Chilli said.

“And Just call me Bandit. Mr.Heeler makes me feel old.” Said Bandit giving Winter a playful smile. She smiled back and followed them out.

Lunch was nice and Winter really liked the Heelers as much as she tried to make herself not. She desperately didn't want to be disappointed again by a family who thinks they want her but in the end leave her back on the steps of the foster home after they found her bleeding, trying to kill herself, after she would yell at them, or have a panic attack. Winter had started to teach herself not to get attached because no one ever wanted her for long. She said goodbye to the Heelers before disappearing into her room. She fell back down onto her bed reaching into her pillow case and pulling out the pencil sharpener blade hiding in there and stood up going to the bathroom. Maybe if she filled the end of today with pain she wouldn't think too much about how much she just wanted them to like her. She deserved it anyway. How could she let herself like them?

“Bluey! Bingo! Can you come down stairs?” Bluey’s ears perked up as her mom called her and her sister to come down.

“Come on Bingo, let's go see what mom wants.” Bluey grabbed Bingo’s arm pulling her down stairs.

“Girls please sit down me and your father have something important to tell you too.” Bluey sat down with Bingo. She really hoped it wasn't something bad tho the last time her parents had sat her down like this was when they had told her she was going to have a sister then Bingo was born. Oh maybe mom was going to get big again and they were gonna get a new sister or brother.

“Girls, you're going to get a new sister.” Bluey’s tail wagged as she shot up.

“I knew it. So when is your tummy gonna get big again?”

“It's not gonna.” her mom said witch confused her.

“But the baby is in the tummy and it gets big. Like with Bingo.” she said, hoping her momma knew she was making no sense.

“I know honey, but this time she’s already born.” Bluey looked at her mom confusedly.

“What?”

“Her name is Winter and she has already been born. Then something happened and now she doesn't have anyone to take care of her so we are gonna be her parents. It's called adoption.” Her mom said with a smile. “And she's gonna be your big sister but she may not be nice or happy at first. She's going through some things.”

“Oh like what?” Bluey asked if she wanted to make her new sister happy. Maybe they could play a game, games always make Bluey and Bingo feel better.

“Oh Bluey unfortunately games can't make this better it will take time ok honey.” Bluey frowned.

“Oh”

“Alright Bingo Bluey she will be coming soon no more than a week. Now you too can go back to your games.” Bluey nodded and pulled Bingo upstairs.

“Bingo, let's plan a party for when she gets here.” Bluey said excitedly.

“Ya ya that will be so fun we can have cake and balloons.” Bingo said, pulling out her notebook and starting to draw out what she wanted the party to look like.
