Work Text:
Since day one, Enid had been slowly, but surely tearing her walls down piece by jagged piece. Now, all of her effort has finally paid off.
Wednesday was quite frankly perturbed. A sudden heaviness weighs her down as she trudges her way back to the others, Eugene and Bianca at her sides. She nearly died five times in the span of a couple of hours. Her body is adorned with dried blood from the numerous murder attempts and her shoulder is still oozing blood at a steady pace. But somehow, all that plagues her thoughts is that damned colorful wolf, who hasn’t shown herself yet.
Wednesday knew what could happen when she left Enid to fight Tyler in the forest, but she trusted her companion to fend for herself. Wednesday knew she was more than capable of handling her own. She’s been rooming with an Addams after all. That in itself builds up a person’s strength and tolerance to the many challenges they may face.
But the doubting voice in the back of her head tells her otherwise. That Enid couldn’t fight off Tyler. That her wolf wasn’t strong enough. This was her first transformation, she couldn’t have known how to control all of her abilities just yet.
So, as the three prevailing students walk through the fog and see the group of students waiting for them, Wednesday takes a breath and reminds herself to be the strong Addams she is. No matter the outcome, she will hold her held up high.
…That is, until a body of color runs and slams directly into Wednesday.
The offender is shaking, barely able to hold themselves up, but they clutch onto Wednesday as if she was the most precious thing in the world. The hold is so gentle, so caring it hurts.
Pushing the person away, Wednesday meets Enid’s eyes. Usually so bright and sparkling with life, now unsure and afraid. Her face is coated with blood, wide gashes sliced across her face from her battle with Tyler. Her hair is matted with dirt and blood, hiding her pink and blue highlights that Wednesday has come to tolerate.
Enid looks like she’s on the verge of tears, relief washing over her features as her body struggles to process the entirety of the night.
Before any tears can fall, Wednesday pulls Enid into the warmest embrace she’s ever given. Arms wrapped tightly around her protector, her light in Wednesday’s never ending darkness.
Enid’s breath hitches as she’s taken into strong and steady arms. Eyes widening before closing as she takes in the feeling of her closest friend alive in her arms. Relief and joy causes her to sag and completely engulf the smaller girl.
They stand like that, bodies entwined, breaths steadily puffing into fog in the crisp night air. Their hearts pressed together as they beat for the other. Finally reassured of the life each beat holds.
The students in the clearing start making their trek back towards their school, leaving the two girls alone. All except for Bianca, Yoko, Eugene, and Xavier.
Yoko speaks up first, her voice hesitant but filled with care. “We should get you both to the nurse.”
Eugene stays quiet, but an already knowing smile quirks up his lips. Ready for what Wednesday is about to say.
Wednesday says something lowly to Enid, whispering into her shoulder. The group of friends watch as Enid nods and squeezes Wednesday once more before letting her go.
Wednesday takes a breath, straightens out her clothes before looking to the concerned group. “That will be unnecessary. I am capable and very qualified in medical care. Enid and I will take our leave, I’ll take care of her in our room. Thing will assist.” The hand in question scuttles over and taps Enid’s mud covered foot in reassurance.
Enid smiles and bends down to pick him up. Cradling the appendage in her hands as she turns to Yoko nodding. “I’m in very good “hands”.” She giggles as she holds up Thing in gesture to her joke. Bianca scoffs and rolls her eyes, while Yoko and Eugene smirk simultaneously.
Xavier huffs out a small laugh but steps closer to Wednesday. “Are you sure you’re okay to do that?”
Wednesday squints her eyes in accusation, “Do you distrust my ability in taking care of Enid?”
Xavier sighs, rubbing his jaw in slight irritation, “I distrust your ability to not bleed out.” He waves a hand at Wednesday’s bleeding wound from the arrow.
Wednesday scoffs, rolling her eyes. “Yes, as if a little blood loss has ever harmed anyone. Women lose more blood than I have on a monthly occurrence. It’s called menstruation.”
Xavier blanches, while Yoko and Bianca snicker. “Th-That’s not what I meant and you know it! You’re bleeding out, Wednesday!!”
Wednesday sighs heavily, “If it will make you stop arguing with me, I will stitch up my shoulder as well. I’ve done it many times before, this will not be any different. After all, Pugsley has gotten much better with his aim.” A proud look flashes through her eyes as she recalls her brother’s accuracy in archery.
Enid shakes her head with a fond smile, knowing just how much Wednesday cares for her brother. Before anyone else can try talking her roommate out of it, Enid speaks up. “Wednesday and I will be fine. And if for some reason we’re not, we’ll let you know and go to the nurse.”
Xavier stares Enid down before conceding, kicking at the dirt with his shoe. “Alright, but just be careful. We don’t need anymore troubling things to happen tonight.”
Wednesday gives him a curt nod, before turning and walking back towards the school. She stops a few paces ahead, waiting for Enid to say goodbye to the others. Thing tapping at Enid’s hand in gesture.
Gently, Enid places him in the floor, watching as he hurries towards Wednesday, pointing a finger at her and giving her a concerned okay sign with his fingers. Wednesday gives him a nod with a small, barely their smile. Enid sees her lowly say something to their beloved hand causing him to sign lovingly back to her.
Finally turning back to her and Wednesday’s friends, Enid addresses them. “I’ll text you when we’re back in our room, please do the same. That way we can all know the other is safely in their room for the night.”
The friends agree before saying goodnight, trading hugs and assurances, then go their separate ways. All starting to process the seriousness of the night, questioning what’s to come.
———
Enid opens the door widely, grinning as she spins in a small circle, “Home sweet home!”
Closing and locking the door behind them, Wednesday looks over, “I must admit, after the night we experienced, I am quite pleased to be back.” She tests the locked door before nodding to herself, deeming it sufficiently sealed.
Enid is about to sit on her bed before stopping short, “I…Should probably clean up first. The last thing I want to do right now is wash my bedding.”
Her little pout makes Wednesday’s stomach flutter dreadfully with moths. “If you wish to shower first, you may. I’ll tend to your wounds once you’re finished.”
Enid shuffles over tiredly, all energy she had entering their room disappearing. “Are you sure?”
Wednesday nods more so to herself than to Enid as she gathers her medical and autopsy supplies. “It’s best your scratches do not get infected. We already don’t know where Tyler’s claws have been.”
Enid makes a noise of disgust as she walks to her wardrobe. Comfortable clothes in hand, she leaves to their bathroom, hoping to wash the entirety of the night away.
The sound of the tap turning and running water soon fills the near empty room.
Wednesday is left to her own devises, finally allowed to sit and think for a moment. A quiet moment of solitude can do wonders for even the coldest of hearts.
Sitting in her writing chair, Wednesday thinks back on the night. From the confrontation with Principal Weems and Ms. Thornhill, to nearly dying in the crypt. Her memories replaying each moment in her head as if she were watching an old movie reel. The screen crackles with the emotions she felt in each moment. But none quite compared to those she felt when Enid saved her from Tyler.
The other worldly beauty her wolf-turned companion held was captivating. From the sharpness of her fangs, the low timbre of her growls, to the burning fury her eyes held. It was truly immaculate. An inexplicably staggering effect she held over Wednesday.
Thing suddenly broke her out of her thoughts by slipping her blazer off her shoulders. Once his task was complete he tapped the box of stitching supplies.
Slightly miffed at being taken from reminiscing, Wednesday started disrobing. Her tie fell quickly, and her shirt was already nothing but ripped fabric at this point. Having been stabbed, burned, shot at, and ripped in the forest, she tossed the offending item in the trash bin next to her desk. Nothing but her bra covered her chest as she examined her still bleeding injury.
It wasn’t horrible, she had already taken out the arrow head earlier so nothing stood in the way of closing the wound. Pressing a clean rag to her skin, she cleaned the blood from her skin. Saline covered gauze was next, a sharp hiss left her lips as the sting of pain flooded her senses. Thing pressed down comfortingly against her thigh. He had already helped in preparing her sutures. The finishing bandage lay out neatly for her on the desk.
Picking up the suturing needle, Wednesday takes a breath before starting the continuous suture pattern. Evenly breathing each time the needle passed through the inflamed skin. Within five minutes her job was done, leaving her skin a bright red from being agitated so much. Placing the clean bandage over her stitches, Wednesday uses a new gauze to wipe away all the dried blood from her stomach and face. The saline solution helping to clean the skin and magically closed wounds Goody helped with.
Once she deemed the task done, Wednesday walked over to her bed where Thing had just finished setting out a pair of dark grey sweatpants and a black thermal knit Henley. Pulling on the aforementioned clothing, she finishes by putting on black socks with little grim reapers. Enid had gifted them to her after one of her weekend trips to Jericho.
By the time she’s pulled the second sock on, the door to the bathroom opens, steam rolling out of the doorway as Enid emerges. Her hair is no longer matted with dirt and blood, instead it’s pulled into two small multicolored pony tails, still dripping slightly as she walks towards her side of the room. Once close enough, Enid completely falls backwards onto her bed, a rush of air leaving her lungs at the movement.
Wednesday notes the brightly colored fuzzy socks she’s wearing, along with her light blue lounge pants and k-pop group shirt that’s risen higher from her position on the bed. Completely revealing her scratched abdomen.
A thundering sense of hatred fills Wednesday’s being.
Let it be known, that no one touches what an Addams’ has claimed as their own. Not without the punishment of death.
“…Wednesday?” Enid’s voice is raspy with exhaustion as she calls out to her roommate.
Snapping out of her vengeance induced reverie, Wednesday stands, monotonously replying, “Yes, Enid?”
The werewolf lifts her head to face the small brunette, “Will it hurt?”
Wednesday pauses in threading the suture thread through the needle. “I have no intention of lying to you, as you will very quickly find out. So yes, it will hurt.” Going back to the task at hand, Wednesday hesitates before admitting, “But I will be as gentle as I can be.”
Enid’s eyes widen, her cheeks warming at the admittance of a soft and concerned Wednesday. She moves to sit up, shoulder pressing softly against her shorter counterpart. “Thank you.” Enid doesn’t want to break the atmosphere that has enveloped their room, so she waits and watches Wednesday prepare everything.
Thing clambers up Enid’s shoulder, gently squeezing to reassure the girl. Wednesday senses his worries, speaking without ever looking up at either of them. “It won’t take long. I’ll be quick and efficient while being careful not to hurt you anymore than it already will. Your abdomen will easily heal on its own, but your cheek and temple need the support that sutures will provide.”
Enid feels her heart warm at being taken care of by Wednesday. The girl who has quickly taken ahold of her heart. “I trust you, Willa.”
Within the next few minutes, Enid whimpers and keens as Wednesday works steadily through the topmost laceration. This one being the widest and deepest of the two. Thing dutifully holding Enid’s hand as she squeezes it through the pain.
Finishing the knot, Wednesday studies her work but is distracted by the tears flowing down Enid’s cheeks. The pain obvious in the way her eyebrows are furrowed and the rumblings of growls in her throat. Her claws are out but she’s careful not to hurt Thing as she holds strongly onto him. The laceration on her cheekbone is not as bad as her temple’s and should heal just as well with a tape strip. Sutures would still be best, but Wednesday would rather not inflict anymore pain upon her dearest wolf.
Ruffling through her medical kit, she pulls out two strips, tearing them into pieces to fit properly into place. The process is must faster than the previous one, and once all bandages are in place, she taps Enid’s shoulder.
Slowly opening her eyes, Enid glances confusedly at Wednesday. “Are…did you finish?”
Wednesday feels a heaviness that settles over her chest at the glossiness in Enid’s eyes. Her voice is shaky as well, another effect pain has in the body. Turning back to her box of supplies, Wednesday puts everything away. “I sutured the laceration along your temple closed, but I used what you may refer to as “butterfly tape” to hold the other until it heals on its own. Given your situation of being a werewolf, it should heal within a a few days, but the scars may remain.”
A hand on the shoulder stops Wednesday from getting up from Enid’s bed. Turning to see why she was stopped, Wednesday’s met with a pair of bright blue seraphic eyes. Ones that are able to look past her walls she so carefully crafted and built.
They’re filled with so much affection and tenderness that Wednesday cannot help but confess. “There was a moment this evening when I had the striking feeling that I may never see you again.” Looking down at the metal box in her hands, not quite able to hold Enid’s strong gaze, Wednesday continues. “I know how many do not believe I care for others. How the only person I care and think of is myself…and maybe it’s true. If that’s what everyone around me sees, then it must be.” Thing taps over to sit in Wednesday’s lap, resting a few fingers on her wrist. “But for whatever reason, the only thing I could think of when I was fighting for my life was if you were fighting too. Because that meant you were still alive. You were still going to come back and tell me about how your first time “wolfing out” went. What the transformation felt like. What you liked and wished were different about it. What you planned to do on the next full moon with your pack. If you wanted to be apart of a pack.” Wednesday stared intently at the box in her hands, not wanting to chance seeing something in Enid’s eyes that would break her completely.
Their dorm was silent for a long moment. Not a sound filled their shared space, nothing but their own breathing.
“Wednesday,” Enid softly and quietly spoke, not wanting to break their moment. “…Can I touch you?” And she waited. She waited for Wednesday’s response before moving.
What an annoyingly, considerate werewolf she was. Wednesday thought to herself, as she let out a hum of affirmation.
Enid pressed a warm palm against her cheek, gently turning Wednesday’s head to face her. To finally meet her eyes and convey everything she’s been feeling.
Enid’s eyes were bright once more, filled with a certain tenderness Wednesday had never expected be directed her way. It was something she’d only been given in her dearest nightmares. The ones she held closest to her heart and that plagued her consciousness.
“Wednesday…the only thing that’s been on my mind this entire night has been you. And a ton of weird shit happened so that’s saying a lot.” Enid chuckled slightly, still not sure why she heard about a reanimated Pilgrim that was out to get outcasts. “You still don’t know how much you mean to me. Maybe it’s because you refuse to believe you’re worth caring for. But I know for a fact that that is the furthest thing from the truth.”
Letting go of Wednesday’s cheek, Enid laces her hand with Wednesday’s slowly, giving the girl an opportunity to move if she wanted to. But she notes how Wednesday’s eyes haven’t strayed from her own since she moved her head.
The hold the brightly colored werewolf has on Wednesday showing in horridly lovely ways.
“The reason I wolfed out tonight was because I knew you were in danger. One I couldn’t protect you from in my human form. You, Wednesday Addams, are the reason I transformed for the first time. Not hormonal boys, not my mother’s pressures, not even the blood moon. It was you who gave me the chance to finally be myself. And I don’t just mean tonight. You’ve been my biggest supporter since our first night together.” Enid warmly stated with the gentlest smile Wednesday’s ever been given.
Wednesday swallows as Enid continues her passion filled rant, unconsciously blinking as she takes in every word spoken to her. “I know you have a hard time conveying your feelings. I know it doesn’t come naturally or easily, but I can see every thought that flickers through your head when you look at me. Your eyes brighten. Your lips quirk up slightly in resting. And you’re no where near the cold shouldered person you are with everyone else. You don’t have to explain every emotion you feel because I see it. I’ll always see it. I can sense it by just being around you. Maybe it’s a wolf thing. Maybe it’s just me being a weirdo. But don’t tell yourself you’re not worthy of my attention or affection. I love you, Wednesday. And quite frankly, I am in love with you.” Enid’s cheeks flush darkly as she confesses her feelings. “It’s embarrassing that it took me this long to realize this. But we’re here now so that’s all that matters!”
Wednesday smirks a little at Enid’s enthusiastic outlook. “Mon loup,” Wednesday squeezes Enid’s hand slightly, trying to get her attention but her roommate keeps going.
“And you have no reason to reciprocate any words or confessions like I just did! I just threw that out there without even giving you a warning!” Enid is breathless at this point, cheeks turning a touch purple, making Wednesday slightly concerned for her health.
“Enid-“
“This all besides the point! I didn’t even mean to just say I loved you out of nowhere! I should’ve planned this! You deserve so much better than a blurted out confession.” A look of horror suddenly passes over Enid’s features, “Oh god! And Ajax!!”
“Enid!” Wednesday raises her voice to get Enid to finally stop and take the breath her lungs desperately needed. The girl in question closes her mouth immediately, jaw clacks loudly from the force of it. A small whimper leaves her throat, “Yes?” Timidly speaking as she’s never heard Wednesday raise her voice before.
Wednesday softens, bringing Enid’s hand up to her lips, kissing it tenderly. “Mon loup, you need to breathe.”
If Wednesday thought that kissing her hand as devotedly as she just did would get Enid to breathe she was sorely mistaken. “Wh-?” Enid breathlessly gasps, cheeks loosing their purple coloring, returning to a bright pink blush. “Willa?” Enid squeaks out, feeling herself heat up at the act of affection.
Wednesday sighs amusedly, “If it was that easy to get you to stop talking, I would’ve done this the day we met.” Her comment does not in fact make Enid’s blush any better. Taking note of this, Wednesday decides to take pity on Enid, granting her mercy. “The…truth is, Enid…you’ve long since held my heart.” Her confession isn’t without a grumbled out, “Though you stole it at first, I suppose I handed it over at some point.”
Thing pats Wednesday’s unoccupied hand proudly. He’d been trying to get Wednesday to confess for quite a while. Her lotion bribes only worked for so long.
Enid’s hand flew to her mouth in shock, eyes watering with emotion. “Really?! For… for how long?”
Wednesday closes her eyes as she admits, “Since our argument.” Reopening her eyes, she stares meaningfully into Enid’s. “Although I had a sense of what was happening before hand, it was then I realized.”
Enid lets out a watery chuckle, wiping her tears away before they can fall. “I think it was the same for me honestly. I just kept trying to convince myself it wasn’t true.” Realization at what she said may come off the wrong way, Enid panicked, “Not because loving you is a bad thing! Far from it! It’s just that… being straight was my last chance at being normal. My mom already dislikes everything about me, I didn’t want to give her another reason.” Enid looks down at their connected hands. Watching how Wednesday lightly thumbs her knuckles. “I already accepted that I’ll never be what my parents wanted. Or expected. I think I really just took it out on you at the time. I was so confused and hurt that I didn’t know where to channel it. Me wolfing out for you, I think it was my body’s way of telling me I finally found a person to live for.”
Wednesday chose that moment to tease affectionately, “Now you won’t have to worry about dying alone.” Enid playfully slaps her arm, giving her a fake glare. Wednesday seriously continues, “I would be honored to be your mate, Enid. If you would also be mine.” Lilting the end of her statement as a question.
Enid abandons all boundaries and pulls Wednesday into a short, but passionate kiss.
Wednesday barely has the time to reciprocate before Enid pulls away. Grinning widely as tears stream down her face. “I’ll be the best mate to you, Willa.” The small smile Wednesday gives her takes her breath away.
The brunette leans in and presses their foreheads together, careful to not touch Enid’s scratches. “And I you, Mon coeur.”
Whatever is to come of Nevermore is of no worry to either girl. For they will have each other and that is enough for them.
